Campgrounds near Nuevo, California
Nuevo sits in unincorporated Riverside County, just east of Perris and within easy reach of the southern Inland Empire's lake and reservoir parks. The town itself is rural and residential, so most RV camping clusters a short drive away around Lake Perris, Mystic Lake, and the agricultural flats north of Menifee. The headline destination is Lake Perris State Recreation Area, the southern terminus of the California State Water Project and the largest public campground in the immediate area, with a separate equestrian facility at Lake Perris State Recreational Area Horse Camp.
Private RV parks fill in the gaps. Camper Resorts of America, Reflection Lake RV Park, Reflection Lake RV Park & Campground, and Wilderness Lakes RV Resort offer full-hookup sites geared toward longer stays, snowbirds, and families using Nuevo as a base for day trips to Temecula wine country, Idyllwild, Joshua Tree National Park, and the Orange County coast. Elevation in the campground area sits near 1,650 feet, which keeps summer evenings slightly cooler than the Los Angeles basin.
Things to do near Nuevo
Lake Perris supports swimming, fishing from shore, pier, and boat, boating, sailing, waterskiing, and a designated area for scuba diving. Anglers target rainbow trout, channel catfish, Alabama spotted bass, largemouth bass, and bluegill, with a state advisory limiting how much fish should be eaten due to mercury and PCB levels. The park also has trails for hikers, bikers, and equestrians, plus a rock climbing area south of the dam. The Ya'Heki' Regional Indian Museum sits inside the park boundary. Beyond the lake, families use Nuevo as a launch point for Diamond Valley Lake, the San Jacinto Wildlife Area for birding, the Soboba and Pechanga casino resorts, and day trips into Temecula's wineries and Old Town. Idyllwild and the San Jacinto Mountains are roughly an hour east when summer heat makes shade a priority.

The Inland Empire runs hot and dry from late spring through early fall. July and August routinely push past 95 degrees on the valley floor, and shade canopies are essentially required at exposed sites. California State Parks notes that while Lake Perris has some shade trees, it can get very hot in summer and extra shade canopies are highly recommended. Despite the heat, summer is the busiest season because of school breaks and lake access, and the park can fill quickly on summer weekends and holidays.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with warm days, cool nights, and minimal rain. Winter is the quiet season and a favorite for snowbirds, with mild daytime temperatures and uncrowded loops. Rain mostly arrives between December and March in short Pacific storms; multi-day washouts are uncommon, but unpaved access roads near Mystic Lake can soften after heavy rain. Wildfire risk peaks in late summer and early fall, especially during Santa Ana wind events.

My 2 kids loved the trailer, we got it delivered with all the optionals included so It was a breeze. Everything worked great - ac & heater where required a couple if times. Water tank was full but we ran out after 3 days even thou we used the camping showers, so I would plan accordingly if you are camping without hookups. I’d definitely rent from Daniel again.

I rented Jonathan's trailer to take my family to the Lake Perris Campground. Jonathan was super helpful, walking me through the camper trailer and giving me great advice on how to set everything up. Even during our trip, he was incredibly responsive whenever I had questions. I will definitely rent from him again!
Peter F. - Jul 2026
The trailer worked well for us, especially when a cold spell brought temperatures below freezing for couple of nights in the end of May. It was easy to tow up into the mountains and back. Jonathan is a great host. He is very helpful and accommodating, quick to answer questions, flexible with pick-up and drop-off times. Will rent from him again.

How to book campgrounds near Nuevo
Lake Perris is run by California State Parks and booked through ReserveCalifornia, either online or by phone. Reservations can be made up to 6 months in advance, and each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grill. The hookup loops at Lake Perris offer water and electric, with no individual sewer hookups; a dump station is available at the campground entrance. Sites accommodate RVs and trailers up to 31 feet, which is a hard limit for larger Class A rigs. Reservations are site-specific, so a particular site number is locked in at booking. The park also limits stays to 15 consecutive nights during peak season, June through November. Private parks including Camper Resorts of America, Reflection Lake RV Park, Reflection Lake RV Park & Campground, and Wilderness Lakes RV Resort book directly through the operator and tend to release peak-season weekends earlier than the state system.
What to expect
Expect a dry, open, semi-rural landscape: rolling brown hills in summer, green and wildflower-dotted in spring, agricultural fields, and the broad blue surface of Lake Perris as the visual anchor. Sites at the state recreation area are paved or compacted, with a mix of hookup and non-hookup loops, plus a separate equestrian area and group sites. Restrooms with flush toilets and free hot showers are standard at the developed loops, and a dump station is on site.
Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable. Bring sun protection, a shade structure, and more drinking water than feels reasonable in summer. Firewood restrictions are enforced to limit the spread of the goldspotted oak borer, so confirm current rules at the entrance station, and wood is typically available for purchase inside the park. Boats are subject to inspection before launch.
