Campgrounds near Pine Hills, California
Pine Hills is a census-designated place in Humboldt County, California, adjacent to Eureka on the North Coast. RV travelers use it as a quiet base for trips into the redwoods, the Humboldt Bay shoreline, and the lower Eel and Mad River valleys. Highway 101 runs through the area, putting Old Town Eureka, Arcata, and Ferndale within a short drive, and the entrance to Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the Avenue of the Giants about an hour south.
Local RV options include Johnny's Marina & RV Park and Shoreline RV Park along Humboldt Bay, Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort in the wider Eureka-Arcata corridor, and Riverwalk RV Park and Mad River Rapids RV Park up near the Mad River. Most are full-hookup private parks with year-round access. Public campgrounds in the surrounding state and national park system, including Humboldt Redwoods and Redwood National and State Parks, sit within day-trip range and handle most of the area's tent and small-RV demand.
Things to do near Pine Hills
The big draw is the redwoods. Humboldt Redwoods State Park, about an hour south, protects Rockefeller Forest, the largest remaining contiguous old-growth coast redwood stand, and the 32-mile Avenue of the Giants scenic drive. Closer in, Redwood National and State Parks to the north offer groves, elk meadows at Prairie Creek, and beach access at Gold Bluffs. The South Fork of the Eel River allows summer swimming, fishing, and paddling when flows drop. Humboldt Bay supports kayaking, oyster tours, and birding around the Arcata Marsh. Families also visit Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, Fort Humboldt State Historic Park, and the Victorian streets of Old Town Eureka and Ferndale.

The North Coast has a mild, marine climate with two clearly different halves of the year. Summer, June through August, is the dry, busy season. Days are cool by California standards, often in the low 60s Fahrenheit, with morning fog that burns off by midday. Private RV parks fill quickly on weekends and around the Fourth of July, and reservations at state park campgrounds inside Humboldt Redwoods and Redwood National and State Parks open six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia on a rolling daily window.
Spring and fall are quieter. Spring brings wildflowers and higher river flows, while fall offers warm, clear stretches before the rains return. Winter is the wet season, with December and January averaging close to seven and a half inches of rain in Eureka, and atmospheric river events can close roads, flood low-lying sites, and force temporary campground closures along the Eel River. Snow at sea level is very rare, but freezing nights occur a few times each winter. Bears are active in the redwood parks year-round, so food storage rules apply.
How to book campgrounds near Pine Hills
Private RV parks around Pine Hills, including Johnny's Marina & RV Park, Shoreline RV Park, Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort, Riverwalk RV Park, and Mad River Rapids RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Booking three to six months ahead is recommended for July, August, and holiday weekends. California State Parks campgrounds, including Burlington, Hidden Springs, and Albee Creek inside Humboldt Redwoods, are reservable only through ReserveCalifornia, online or at 1-800-444-7275, up to six months in advance and as late as 48 hours before arrival. State park sites have no hookups, no dump station in the park, and a 24-foot RV and trailer length limit. Redwood National and State Parks campgrounds also use ReserveCalifornia.
What to expect on the ground
Expect cool, damp air most mornings, even in summer. Pack layers, rain gear in any season, and quick-dry footwear. Cell coverage is reliable in Eureka, Arcata, and along Highway 101 but drops off quickly on the Lost Coast, in Bull Creek, and on side roads into the redwoods. Private RV parks near Pine Hills generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and bay or river views, but sites can be tight for larger Class A rigs. State park campgrounds are forested and quiet, with flush toilets, coin-operated showers, and bear-proof food lockers but no hookups. Roads through the redwoods are narrow and curve through the groves. Raccoons, deer, and Steller's jays are common campsite visitors.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Pine Hills, CA
How much does an RV rental in Pine Hills cost?
RV rental in Pine Hills is one of the most affordable ways to explore California's rugged North Coast. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans run about $125 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300 nightly. Because Pine Hills sits just east of Eureka in Humboldt County, you avoid the premium pricing of Bay Area pickups while still being a short drive from the redwoods. For a cheap RV rental in Pine Hills, book midweek in spring or fall, filter by Instant Book, and consider a travel trailer with delivery rather than a drivable motorhome. Many hosts also offer weekly discounts if you stay 7+ nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pine%20Hills%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Pine Hills, California?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pine Hills. California does not require a commercial driver's license or special RV endorsement for any motorhome you'll find on RVezy, whether it's a campervan, Class C, or even a larger Class A under 40 feet. You'll just need to be 25 or older and verify your ID through the RVezy platform during booking, which takes only a few minutes. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license, available from your local auto association for under $25. That's it, no test, no extra paperwork, just pick up and go.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-05/Is insurance and roadside assistance included with my Pine Hills RV rental?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Redwood Highway with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the RV up to the coverage level you select at checkout, so you decide how much protection feels right, not the host. Roadside assistance is built in and covers flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. Given that Pine Hills is surrounded by remote forest roads and coastal highways, having 24/7 help on call is a genuine comfort. Most renters tell us they forget about the worry within an hour of pickup and just enjoy the drive.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Pine Hills RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy to every reservation (hosts don't set this), and you can review the full details before you confirm payment. Depending on how far ahead of your trip you cancel, you may be eligible for a partial or full refund, and if a host ever cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit. RVezy support also helps with unexpected situations like wildfires or winter storms that occasionally affect Humboldt County. The smartest move: book your preferred rig early (Pine Hills inventory is limited), then relax knowing the cancellation terms are transparent and consistent.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Pine Hills?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Pine Hills is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Many Humboldt County hosts are pet owners themselves and provide extras like blankets or tie-outs. Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: the Hammond Coastal Trail, the dog-friendly beach at Clam Beach County Park, and leashed dogs are allowed in developed areas and on paved roads of Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Note that Redwood National and State Parks restrict pets on most trails, so plan dog walks around campgrounds, picnic areas, and beaches. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees, usually $25 to $75 per trip.
nps.gov/redw/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Pine Hills?
Yes, RV delivery in Pine Hills is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the RV straight to your campsite at Sue-meg State Park (formerly Patrick's Point), Humboldt Redwoods State Park, or a private property in Eureka or Arcata, then level it, hook up utilities, and walk you through every system. You skip the stress of driving an unfamiliar rig on Highway 101 and just step inside a ready-to-camp home. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which hosts offer it. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile round trip, and many hosts include free delivery within 20 miles of Eureka or Arcata.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pine%20Hills%2C%20CaliforniaHow does mileage work and how far can I drive on a Pine Hills RV trip?
You've got plenty of road ahead. Most Pine Hills hosts on RVezy include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal if you're planning a longer loop. Additional miles typically cost $0.30 to $0.50 each, clearly shown on the listing before you book. From Pine Hills, you can easily reach Redwood National Park (45 miles north), the Avenue of the Giants (50 miles south), Trinidad and Patrick's Point (25 miles north), Shelter Cove on the Lost Coast (75 miles south), or even Crater Lake, Oregon (around 300 miles). Pro tip: if you're planning to head to Oregon or down to Mendocino, filter by unlimited mileage to avoid surprises.
fs.usda.gov/srnfWhere are the best campgrounds near Pine Hills for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Pine Hills include Sue-meg State Park (formerly Patrick's Point) with ocean-bluff sites just 25 minutes north, Humboldt Redwoods State Park with the popular Burlington and Hidden Springs campgrounds among towering redwoods, Eureka KOA for full hookups about 15 minutes away, Clam Beach County Park for budget-friendly beachfront camping, and Elk Prairie Campground inside Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park where Roosevelt elk often wander through camp. RV camping in Pine Hills is best when you book state park sites through ReserveCalifornia up to 6 months in advance, especially for summer weekends. Pro tip: midweek sites at Elk Prairie often open up last-minute, even in July.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time to visit Pine Hills in an RV?
Pine Hills has a cool, mild coastal climate year-round, so the season is longer than most California destinations. The sweet spot is late June through early October, when daytime highs typically sit in the low to mid 60s°F and the famous coastal fog often burns off by midday. May and September are quieter, cheaper, and still beautiful, perfect for a relaxed motorhome rental in Pine Hills without summer crowds. Winters are wet but rarely freezing (lows around 40°F), so RV travel is absolutely doable if you don't mind rain and dramatic, moody redwoods. Local insider tip: early October often delivers some of the clearest skies of the year, with great whale-watching from the bluffs at Trinidad.
weather.gov/eka/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Pine Hills?
You'll do great. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially around Pine Hills where Highway 101 is wide, well-maintained, and traffic is light compared to most of California. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving tips, hookups, generator, slide-outs, and dumping tanks, and you can call or text them throughout your trip. If you're nervous, start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer with delivery so you don't drive at all. Stick to 101 and Avenue of the Giants for your first day, both are RV-friendly. Pro tip: avoid Highway 36 east of Fortuna and Mattole Road on the Lost Coast until you're comfortable, they're narrow and winding.
dot.ca.gov/travelWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every Pine Hills RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so one phone call gets help dispatched for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, or towing. Your host is also typically just a text away and knows their rig inside and out, often solving small issues in minutes. Cell coverage is solid along Highway 101 and in Eureka, Arcata, and McKinleyville, though it can thin out in the deep redwoods or on the Lost Coast. Pro tip: download offline maps of Humboldt County before you head out, and save the RVezy support number in your phone so it's ready if you ever need it.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are popular road trips from Pine Hills?
An RV road trip from Pine Hills opens up some of the most spectacular driving in the western U.S. Head about 45 minutes north to Redwood National and State Parks for old-growth giants and Roosevelt elk, or cruise south on the Avenue of the Giants (about 1 hour) for 31 miles of towering trees. The Lost Coast loop through Ferndale, Petrolia, and Shelter Cove is a full-day adventure (around 100 miles, with narrow sections best for smaller rigs). Want to go bigger? Crater Lake, Oregon is roughly 6 hours northeast, and the southern Oregon Coast via Brookings is about 2.5 hours north. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but Oregon and the rest of California are completely fine. Always confirm out-of-state plans with your host before booking.
nps.gov/redw/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in Pine Hills?
Budgeting is straightforward. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG while towing). Gas prices in Humboldt County tend to run slightly above the California average, so fill up in Eureka or Arcata, where larger stations often offer the best prices, rather than smaller towns like Orick or Garberville where prices can jump noticeably per gallon. For a 4-night trip with 400 miles of driving in a Class C, budget roughly $200 to $275 in fuel. Pro tip: most Pine Hills rentals run on unleaded regular, but double-check at pickup since a few diesel Class C rigs are out there.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Pine Hills?
Plan ahead and you'll get the best spots. California state parks like Sue-meg (Patrick's Point), Humboldt Redwoods, and Prairie Creek release reservations 6 months in advance on ReserveCalifornia, and summer weekends (June through August) book up within hours of opening. Private parks like KOA Eureka and Redwood Coast Cabins & RV Resort usually have more availability and you can book directly on their websites 3 to 4 months out. For shoulder seasons (April, May, September, October), 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Local insider tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) at Elk Prairie and Burlington campgrounds are dramatically easier to score, even in peak summer, and the redwoods feel even more magical without weekend crowds.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Pine Hills?
Driving around Pine Hills is genuinely pleasant for RVs. Highway 101 is wide, mostly four-lane through Eureka and Arcata, and well-graded with gentle curves heading north to the redwoods. The main thing to watch for is coastal fog (especially early mornings June through August), occasional winter rain, and a few narrow mountain roads you'll want to avoid in a big rig: Highway 36 east, Mattole Road on the Lost Coast, and Bald Hills Road into Redwood National Park (small RVs only). Speed limits drop to 50 mph in the Avenue of the Giants, which is enjoyable anyway. Local insider tip: the section of 101 between Leggett and Garberville (the Confusion Hill area) has tight turns, take it slow and you'll be totally fine.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds around Pine Hills?
Campground amenities in the Pine Hills area are solid and varied. Private parks like Eureka KOA and Mad River Rapids RV Park offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and hot showers. California state parks like Humboldt Redwoods and Sue-meg typically offer water and flush toilets but no sewer hookups at the site, plus dump stations on the way out. For fresh water and dumping mid-trip, the Eureka KOA and Mad River Rapids RV Park both allow non-guest dump-and-fill for a small fee (around $15 to $25). Pro tip: top off fresh water in Arcata or Eureka before heading into Redwood National Park, in-park hookups are limited and you'll appreciate the buffer.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425What's included inside the RV itself?
Pine Hills RV rentals come ready for adventure. Expect a real bed (or two or three), a kitchen with stove, fridge, sink and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class C and larger rigs, dining/lounge seating with seatbelts for travel, air conditioning, propane heat, and a house battery system. Many rentals also include a generator (great for boondocking in Six Rivers National Forest), a TV/DVD, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink as add-ons. Smaller campervans skip the bathroom but include clever galleys and cozy beds. Every listing on RVezy shows exactly what's included, with photos, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: ask your host about a stargazing chair package, the night skies at Patrick's Point are incredible.
energy.ca.gov/programs-and-topics/topics/zero-emission-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize your trip easily. Common add-ons include kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bedding packages ($25 to $75 per bed), generators ($10 to $25/day), bikes, kayaks, outdoor chairs, BBQ grills, and Starlink Wi-Fi. Most Pine Hills hosts offer flexible pickup in Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville, or Fortuna, often free within a 15-mile radius, and same-day delivery to popular campgrounds like Humboldt Redwoods is common. Mileage policies are listed clearly on each listing (typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with unlimited mileage available from some hosts). Pro tip: bundle a few add-ons with delivery and you'll arrive at your campsite to a fully stocked, fully set up RV, perfect for a stress-free family RV trip in Pine Hills.
visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/redwoods/How do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book on RVezy, you pay the full rental amount through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash exchanged with hosts. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, not charged, and released back to you within 7 days of trip completion assuming no damage. To avoid any deposit issues: do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup, take photos or video, return the RV with a clean interior and the fuel level you started with, and dump tanks before drop-off (or pay the dumping fee if offered). Easy, transparent, and designed so your rent an RV in Pine Hills experience ends as smoothly as it started.
