RV camping near Richgrove, California
Richgrove is a small unincorporated community in southern Tulare County, set in the southern San Joaquin Valley between Delano and Earlimart. The surrounding flatlands are dominated by vineyards, almond orchards, and citrus groves, with Highway 99 running just to the west as the main travel corridor. RV travelers use Richgrove as a quiet, low-traffic base between the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Sierra Nevada destinations.
The closest public campground is Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, which preserves the history of Allensworth, California's only town founded, financed, and governed by African Americans. Private RV parks cluster around Delano and the north Bakersfield area, including Quail Valley RV Park, Rosedale Village RV Campland, Bakersfield River Run RV Park, and Shady Haven RV Park. Most offer full hookups, paved or concrete pads, and easy freeway access, which makes the Richgrove corridor a practical overnight stop for travelers moving along Highway 99 or staging trips toward Sequoia and Kings Canyon.
Things to do near Richgrove
The main local attraction is Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, where restored 20th-century buildings include a schoolhouse, a church, businesses, homes, a hotel, and a library. The park has picnic areas and walking paths, and wildlife species commonly seen include burrowing owls, which are active during the day, and the endangered San Joaquin kit fox. South of Richgrove, the Kern River Parkway Trail in Bakersfield offers paved riding and walking adjacent to Bakersfield River Run RV Park. Day trips reach the wineries and tasting rooms around Delano, the country-music venues of Bakersfield, and longer drives lead east into Sequoia National Forest. Spring wildflower viewing on nearby grasslands and birdwatching at preserves such as Kern National Wildlife Refuge round out the options for families staying in the area.

The southern San Joaquin Valley has a long, hot, dry summer and a short, cool, damp winter. From late June through early September, daytime highs frequently push into the upper 90s and low 100s Fahrenheit, and shade is limited at most area campgrounds. RVers traveling in summer should plan for strong air-conditioning loads and choose sites with electrical service rated for the heat. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping in the area. March through May brings mild days, blooming orchards, and wildflowers on nearby grasslands, while September through November offers warm afternoons, cool nights, and the harvest season in the surrounding vineyards.
Winter is the wettest season, though total rainfall remains modest. Tule fog can sharply reduce visibility along Highway 99 from December through February, which is worth factoring into arrival times. Wildfire smoke from foothill and Sierra fires occasionally drifts into the valley in late summer and early fall, so checking air-quality forecasts before travel is sensible.

We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!
Hannah D. - Aug 2026
Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.

Great experience this RV was clean and in excellent condition. Joseph was super flexible with the pick up/ delivery time. It was my first time using an RV and he was nice enough to meet me beforehand to give me a run down of how everything worked. Overall I had a great experience. I will definitely rent from this guy again.
Angel G. - Jun 2026
Great experience renting from Joseph! The RV was clean, comfortable, and worked perfectly for our festival trip with friends. Communication was easy, and we had no issues during our trip.

How to book campgrounds near Richgrove
Sites at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park are handled through the California State Parks system at ReserveCalifornia, by phone or online. Reservations can be booked up to 6 months in advance, and reservations are not necessary, but can be made online through Reserve California at least 48 hours in advance of your planned stay. Holiday weekends fill first, so booking earlier is recommended for those dates. Private parks such as Quail Valley RV Park, Rosedale Village RV Campland, Bakersfield River Run RV Park, and Shady Haven RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, with some also listed on third-party booking platforms. Big-rig pull-through sites and full-hookup sites are typically the first to sell out, particularly during snowbird season from late fall through early spring. Confirming rig length, slide clearance, and pet policy at the time of booking helps avoid arrival-day surprises.
What to expect on arrival
Expect flat, open terrain with limited natural shade. The 15-site campground sits behind the reconstructed town, operates year-round with concrete RV pads, and offers full hookup sites with water, sewer, and 30-amp electric service, plus covered picnic tables, barbecue grills, flush toilets, and hot showers. Major train tracks skirt the east side of the park and trains run all day and night, though many campers tune them out. Private parks in the Delano and Bakersfield area generally provide full hookups, paved interior roads, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with amenities such as pools and recreation rooms at larger properties like Bakersfield River Run RV Park. Highway 99 noise is noticeable at sites closest to the freeway. Stock up on groceries, water, and fuel in Delano or Bakersfield, as services directly in Richgrove are limited.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Richgrove, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Richgrove, CA?
An RV rental in Richgrove is one of the more affordable ways to explore the southern San Joaquin Valley. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $75 to $150 per night, campervans run about $125 to $225, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $325 per night, depending on age, size, and season. Because Richgrove sits in agricultural Tulare County rather than a tourist hub, you can often find a cheap RV rental in Richgrove compared with Los Angeles or coastal pickup points. Pro tip: book Sunday through Thursday in spring or fall to unlock the best weeknight rates before heading up to Sequoia.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Richgrove%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Richgrove?
Good news: a regular Class C California driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Richgrove for almost every motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer on RVezy. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does not require a commercial or special RV license for personal recreational vehicles under 40 feet, and no endorsement is needed for most fifth wheels under 15,000 pounds gross. You must be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto club before you fly. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork really is.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-05/Is my Richgrove RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Richgrove booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip within plan limits, and roadside help is one phone call away if you get a flat on Highway 99 or need a jump start outside Delano. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your comfort, with higher tiers offering lower out-of-pocket costs. Coverage details are clearly laid out before you confirm, so you can focus on the Sequoia foothills, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Richgrove RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies one consistent cancellation policy across the platform, so you are not at the mercy of individual hosts. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and refund eligibility after that depends on how far out your trip is. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. The full policy details are explained on the RVezy website before you confirm payment, so you know exactly where you stand. Pro tip: book early for peak Sequoia season in summer, then relax knowing your reservation has flexibility built in.

Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Richgrove is just a filter click away on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to see hosts who welcome four-legged passengers, then message them about any pet fee or breed notes before you book. Once on the road, your pup is welcome at Lake Success Recreation Area south of Porterville, on leashed trails in Sequoia National Forest's lower elevations, and at most private RV parks along Highway 99. Bring a tie-out, plenty of water for hot Valley afternoons, and a shaded mat. Pro tip: Tule Elk State Natural Reserve allows leashed dogs in day-use areas, making it an easy stop on your way south.
fs.usda.gov/sequoiaCan a host deliver the RV to me in Richgrove?
Yes, RV delivery in Richgrove is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many RVezy hosts in Tulare and Kern counties will drive the RV to your home, your hotel in Delano, or directly to a campground like Lake Success or Sequoia RV Ranch in Three Rivers. They will level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it and the per-mile rate. This is especially helpful if you are flying into Bakersfield (BFL) or Fresno (FAT) and do not want to drive a big rig out of the airport.

Winters are mild with lows around 38 degrees Fahrenheit, almost no snow in town, and famous Tule fog on Highway 99 mornings. Pro tip: October weeknights are heavenly, with quiet campgrounds and harvest scents in the air.
weather.gov/hnx/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?

They share their cell number, so if a question pops up at your campsite in Three Rivers or Lake Success, help is one text away. The roads around Richgrove are flat, straight, and easy: Highway 99 and County Road J22 are perfect for finding your footing before climbing into the Sierra. Pro tip: pick a campervan or smaller Class C for your first trip; they drive much like a large SUV and park easily at Sequoia's foothill pullouts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Richgrove RV trip?

Most issues are resolved within a couple of hours, and your trip rolls on without missing the giant sequoias.

nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/driving.htmHow much will fuel cost on my Richgrove RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, but it's manageable with a little planning. California gas prices typically run $1.00 to $1.50 per gallon above the national average, and the California Energy Commission tracks current pricing weekly. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, a campervan 16 to 20 mpg, and a travel trailer towed by a half-ton truck about 10 to 14 mpg. A 300-mile round trip from Richgrove up to Sequoia and back in a Class C runs roughly $130 to $180 in gas at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Delano or Bakersfield where prices are usually 20 to 40 cents cheaper than the foothill towns like Three Rivers.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far ahead should I book a campground near Richgrove?
For RV camping near Richgrove, book as early as you can: California campgrounds get competitive. Sequoia and Kings Canyon's Potwisha, Lodgepole, and Dorst Creek campgrounds open reservations on Recreation.gov six months ahead, and summer weekends sell out within minutes of release. Lake Success sites through the Army Corps of Engineers also book six months out. Private parks like Sequoia RV Ranch and Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield are easier and often have weekday availability one to two weeks out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 7:00 a.m. Pacific on the six-month release date for Lodgepole in July, and have your dates and rig length ready to lock it in fast.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/233085What are the driving conditions like around Richgrove?
Driving around Richgrove is refreshingly relaxed for California. Highway 99 and Highway 65 are wide, flat, and four-lane, with light traffic compared with Los Angeles or the Bay Area, perfect for getting comfortable in your motorhome rental Richgrove pickup. Watch for two local quirks: dense Tule fog can cut visibility to under a quarter mile on winter mornings (slow down or pull off until it lifts), and Generals Highway into Sequoia has steep grades and tight switchbacks above Hospital Rock, so RVs longer than 22 feet should enter via Highway 180 from Fresno instead. Caltrans QuickMap shows real-time fog, chain controls, and closures. Pro tip: avoid Highway 99 between 7 and 9 a.m. winter mornings.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Richgrove?
Campgrounds near Richgrove offer a real range so you can match your comfort level. Full-hookup parks like Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield and Sequoia RV Ranch in Three Rivers provide water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, and laundry. Lake Success has a mix of hookup and dry sites with potable water fills and dump stations on site. National park campgrounds in Sequoia (Potwisha, Lodgepole, Dorst Creek) have no hookups but offer flush toilets, drinking water, and dump stations at Potwisha and Lodgepole. Pro tip: fill your fresh tank and dump waste before heading into the national park, where services are limited and lines can be long on summer Sundays.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat is included inside a typical RV rental from Richgrove?
Most RVezy rentals around Richgrove come fully road-ready. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning (essential for Central Valley summers), a furnace, a propane system, and a 12-volt house battery. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes include a generator, multiple TVs, and seatbelts for everyone on the road. Many hosts add bedding, towels, camp chairs, and outdoor mats. Wi-Fi hotspots are a common add-on. Check the listing's amenity icons and message the host to confirm anything specific. Pro tip: confirm the AC works on both shore power and generator before pickup; you will want it running in July.
energy.ca.gov/programs-and-topics/topics/energy-efficiencyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with a Richgrove rental?
RVezy hosts offer a buffet of extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor camp chair and table sets, portable generators, propane fire pits, bike racks, kayaks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Delivery to your Richgrove address or a campground like Lake Success is widely available, with hosts charging a per-mile rate. Pickup is usually at the host's home, and many offer Instant Book so you can confirm in seconds. Mileage policies range from 100 miles per day to unlimited, depending on the host. Pro tip: bundling bedding, a generator, and delivery often costs less than driving back and forth, especially if you are flying into Bakersfield Airport.
flybakersfield.com/general-information/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card at booking, and the funds are held until the trip begins. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is placed as an authorization hold on your card before pickup, typically ranging from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value. As long as you return the rig in the condition you received it, with the agreed mileage and a clean interior, the hold is released after drop-off. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, including the odometer, generator hours, and tank levels, so any questions are easy to resolve.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I stay cool during a summer RV trip from Richgrove?
Summer in Richgrove is no joke: highs from June through September often hit 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit on the Valley floor, so smart planning makes all the difference. Drive in the early morning or evening to keep the engine and tires happy, park in shade or position the awning toward the sun, and run the roof AC on shore power whenever possible (most RVs cool best when starting from already-cool interiors). Better yet, escape elevation: head 60 miles north into Sequoia where Lodgepole at 6,700 feet stays 25 degrees cooler. Hydrate constantly, keep pets out of parked rigs, and check Cal/OSHA heat advisories. Pro tip: a family RV trip Richgrove favorite is basing in the Giant Forest area all of July.
