Camping near San Bernardino, California
San Bernardino sits in the Inland Empire at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, about an hour east of Los Angeles. The city works as a practical staging point for RV trips into Southern California's mountains, deserts, and coast. Valley-floor RV parks offer full hookups and year-round access, while the San Bernardino National Forest to the north opens up alpine campgrounds at elevations from roughly 4,000 to over 7,000 feet.
Close to the city, San Bernardino RV Park, Mission RV Park, Terrace Village RV Park, and Reche Canyon Mobile Estate and RV Park provide paved sites suitable for larger rigs and easy access to Interstates 10 and 215. For a higher-elevation, group-oriented stay in the pines, Thousand Pines Christian Camp lies up in the Crestline area. From any of these basecamps, renters are within reach of Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Silverwood Lake, Joshua Tree National Park, and Pacific beaches.
Things to do around San Bernardino
The valley is the launch point for two very different landscapes. Northward in the San Bernardino National Forest, families can fish for trout at Green Valley Lake, swim and boat at Big Bear Lake, hike to alpine viewpoints, and, in winter, ski at Big Bear or Snow Valley. Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area adds waterskiing, swim beaches, and a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail.
Closer in, the Santa Ana River Trail and Glen Helen Regional Park offer day-use recreation. East of the city, Joshua Tree National Park is roughly two hours away for desert hiking and stargazing. To the west, Pacific beaches at Huntington and Newport are reachable as day trips. The forest also has off-highway vehicle trails and developed picnic areas along Highway 38.

63° / 43°F 75 mmWettest season; mountain campgrounds often closed by snow
The valley floor stays warm and dry most of the year. Summer brings hot, sunny days, often well into the 90s Fahrenheit, with cool nights. RVers heading to the city itself should plan for shade and air conditioning between June and September. Higher-elevation campgrounds in the San Bernardino National Forest run 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the valley, which is why summer demand for mountain sites is heavy and weekends book out far in advance.
Many Forest Service campgrounds operate seasonally, with higher-elevation sites typically closed from late fall through April due to snow. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for valley camping, with mild temperatures and wildflower bloom in the foothills. Winter is the wettest period; rain at the valley floor often falls as snow above about 5,000 feet, closing some mountain roads. Wildfire risk peaks in late summer and early fall, and seasonal fire restrictions are common.

I rented Jonathan's trailer to take my family to the Lake Perris Campground. Jonathan was super helpful, walking me through the camper trailer and giving me great advice on how to set everything up. Even during our trip, he was incredibly responsive whenever I had questions. I will definitely rent from him again!
Peter F. - Jul 2026
The trailer worked well for us, especially when a cold spell brought temperatures below freezing for couple of nights in the end of May. It was easy to tow up into the mountains and back. Jonathan is a great host. He is very helpful and accommodating, quick to answer questions, flexible with pick-up and drop-off times. Will rent from him again.

How to book campsites near San Bernardino
Private RV parks in and around the city, including San Bernardino RV Park, Mission RV Park, Terrace Village RV Park, and Reche Canyon Mobile Estate and RV Park, take direct bookings by phone or website and generally accept larger rigs. Reservations are recommended on weekends and during snowbird season.
Campgrounds in the San Bernardino National Forest are reserved through Recreation.gov, typically up to six months in advance for individual sites and up to twelve months ahead for group sites. Day-use parking at developed forest sites also requires a National Forest Adventure Pass or equivalent recreation pass. Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area and other California State Parks campgrounds are reserved through ReserveCalifornia on a rolling six-month window. Group stays at Thousand Pines Christian Camp are booked directly through the camp. Wilderness permits for San Gorgonio and Cucamonga are issued separately by the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association.
What to expect on the ground
Valley RV parks near San Bernardino are functional rather than scenic: paved or gravel pads, full hookups, laundry, and easy freeway access, with limited shade and traffic noise at sites closest to I-10 or I-215. They suit overnight stops, work travel, and snowbirds more than a destination stay.
Mountain campgrounds in the national forest deliver the scenery: pine and oak woodland, granite outcrops, and cooler air. Most are dry camping with vault toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and limited or no hookups. Cell service is patchy above the rim. Bear activity is reported at forest sites in the San Bernardino Mountains, so food must be stored in hard-sided vehicles or lockers. Mosquitoes are minimal, but afternoon thunderstorms can develop in summer at elevation.

Take it slow on the climbs to Big Bear via Highway 18 or 38 and to Lake Arrowhead, where steep grades and tight curves call for low gears and patience. Plan to avoid weekday rush hours from about 3 to 6 pm in the Inland Empire. If you would rather skip the mountain driving entirely, choose a host who offers RV delivery to your campground.
