Campgrounds and RV parks near Searles Valley, CA

Day trips run in every direction. The Trona Pinnacles, a National Natural Landmark of more than 500 tufa spires, sit just south of town on graded dirt roads. To the north, Death Valley National Park delivers Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Badwater Basin, and Dante's View, along with the historic Wildrose Charcoal Kilns used in the late 1800s. Strong hikers can tackle Telescope Peak, the high point of the Panamint Range, from the Mahogany Flat trailhead. At Red Rock Canyon State Park, visitors hike along the floodplain and explore mini slot canyons and unique rock formations. The park is also known for stargazing, rock climbing, and photography, with red cliffs that light up at sunrise and sunset. Ballarat ghost town and Panamint Valley scenic drives round out the area.

Searles Valley and the surrounding Mojave are sharply seasonal. Spring and fall are the planning windows for most RV travelers, with mild days, cool nights, and lower fire risk. Ricardo Campground at Red Rock Canyon is especially popular on spring and fall weekends, when sites can fill on Friday afternoons. Elevation changes everything in this region. Winter and early spring often bring snow and ice to the high Panamint sites, closing Mahogany Flat seasonally. Even in late spring, icy conditions may persist on the access road. Mahogany Flat is generally suitable for summer and fall camping once the snowpack clears. Wildrose, at 4,100 feet, stays open year round but can see winter snow and strong winds. Summer brings extreme heat to the valley floor. Travelers should plan early starts, carry extra water, and treat lower-elevation sites as transit stops rather than midday destinations. Fire restrictions are common in the Panamints during the dry months.

Facilities are minimal at the National Park Service sites. Wildrose sits at 4,100 feet with no potable water in the area, no hookups, and generators allowed 7am to 7pm. The area is prone to high winds, and sites are dirt and gravel surrounded by mesquite. Mahogany Flat is more rugged: the final miles require high-clearance, and 4x4 is often necessary, with total distance from Stovepipe Wells about 39 miles. RV length limits apply on the Panamint Range roads, so large rigs should stage at Panamint Springs or Stovepipe Wells. At Ricardo, there are no RV hookups or showers, a maximum of eight people per site, potable water at spigots, pit toilets, fire rings, and tables. Pack out trash, carry extra water, and expect strong wind, dust, and dark skies.
