Campgrounds near Shelter Cove, California
Shelter Cove sits on a remote stretch of California's Lost Coast in southern Humboldt County, surrounded by the King Range National Conservation Area. Access is via a single winding mountain road from Redway, and the drive in involves tight switchbacks and steep grades, so RV renters should plan trip timing and rig size carefully.
In town, Shelter Cove RV Park offers full-hookup sites with ocean views and walking access to the cove. Inland along U.S. 101, the redwood corridor near Garberville delivers the area's larger campground inventory: Richardson Grove State Park sits in old-growth redwoods on the South Fork Eel River, Benbow Lake State Recreational Area runs along the same river just south of Garberville, Benbow KOA Holiday provides full-service RV sites and cabins, and Dean Creek Resort Motel and Campground and RV Park anchors the Redway junction where travelers turn west for the coast.
Things to do near Shelter Cove
Outdoor activity centers on the coast and the redwoods. Black Sands Beach is a short drive from town, and hikers head to King Peak or the Paradise Royale Mountain Bike Trail System. The Lost Coast Trail begins at Black Sands Beach and runs north along undeveloped shoreline; day hikes from the trailhead are popular with RV travelers who do not want to backpack the full route. Tidepooling at low tide, salmon and rockfish charters out of the cove, and whale watching from coastal bluffs round out the coastal options. Inland, Richardson Grove State Park features coast redwoods more than 300 feet tall and the South Fork of the Eel River, part of the national Wild and Scenic River System, with summer swimming holes and short interpretive loops suitable for families.

The Lost Coast has a mild marine climate with a sharp wet-dry split. Summer is the prime RV season: dry weather, long daylight, and reliable access on the mountain road into Shelter Cove. July and August are the sunniest months with around 11.7 hours of sunshine per day, while coastal fog is common at the cove on summer mornings. Inland at Garberville, daytime highs run notably warmer than at the coast.
State park campgrounds follow a strict summer-season calendar. At Richardson Grove State Park, the Huckleberry, Madrone, and Dawn Redwood Group Camp areas fully reopen a week before Memorial Day weekend as sites become reservable; the last night to camp in Huckleberry and Dawn Redwood is the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, and Madrone operates as walk-in self-registration only during the off-season from early September through late May. The campground at Benbow Lake State Recreational Area is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, while the day-use area is available year-round. Winter brings the bulk of the annual rainfall and possible road closures from storm damage.
How to book campsites near Shelter Cove
California State Parks use a single reservation system for Richardson Grove and Benbow Lake. Reservations are made through ReserveCalifornia, and visitors can book campsites and lodging six months in advance from the current date. At Richardson Grove State Park, the RV length limit is 30 feet and the trailer length limit is 24 feet, which rules out larger Class A motorhomes and longer fifth wheels. Benbow Lake State Recreational Area has similar size constraints. The maximum allowable stay is thirty nights per calendar year per park, with no more than fifteen of these nights permitted during the summer season. Benbow KOA Holiday, Dean Creek Resort Motel and Campground and RV Park, and Shelter Cove RV Park are private operators that take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends fill earliest; booking at the six-month window is recommended for July and August.
What to expect on the ground
Expect remote terrain and limited services once travelers leave U.S. 101. The only paved route into Shelter Cove is a narrow, climbing road with tight switchbacks, and large rigs should consider basing inland at Benbow KOA Holiday or Dean Creek Resort Motel and Campground and RV Park, then day-tripping to the coast in a tow vehicle. Cell coverage is unreliable in canyon stretches, and there is no cell phone or internet service at Richardson Grove State Park, so travelers should bring printed reservation confirmations. Coastal weather changes quickly: layers, wind protection, and tide tables are essentials. At Richardson Grove, except for service animals, dogs are not allowed on trails. Fuel, groceries, and restaurants are available in Garberville and Redway; in Shelter Cove itself, options are limited to a general store, a deli, and a handful of seasonal eateries.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Shelter Cove, CA?
An RV rental in Shelter Cove is one of the most affordable ways to experience California's Lost Coast. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and campervans land between $125 and $225. Add nightly campsite fees of roughly $30 to $70 at local parks like Shelter Cove RV Campground and you still come out ahead of coastal hotels. To score a cheap RV rental in Shelter Cove, book midweek, travel in the May or September shoulder season, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in the best prices before summer fishing season fills up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shelter%20Cove%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Shelter Cove?
A regular California driver's license (Class C) is all you need to rent an RV in Shelter Cove for nearly every rig on RVezy. Per the California DMV, a standard Class C license covers any housecar 40 feet or shorter, plus travel trailers under 10,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which includes the vast majority of motorhomes and trailers on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy will verify your ID right inside the app. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country before you fly, and you're all set to explore the Lost Coast.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/driver-license-classes/Is RV rental insurance included when I rent an RV in Shelter Cove?
Every RVezy booking includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the winding road to Shelter Cove with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host). That is especially reassuring given Shelter Cove's only access is a steep 23-mile mountain road from Redway. Coverage levels and what is included are detailed on RVezy's protection page so you can focus on the black sand beaches and sea lions, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if I need to change my Shelter Cove RV trip?
Booking an RV rental in Shelter Cove is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, plus additional flexibility based on how far out your trip is, which matters on the Lost Coast where winter storms can occasionally close Briceland-Thorn Road. You can review the current cancellation terms in the RVezy Help Center before you book. If plans shift, message your host early and reach out to RVezy support, available before, during, and after every trip, so you stay on the road to King Range with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Shelter Cove RV trip?
Yes, the Lost Coast is wonderfully dog-friendly, and finding a pet-friendly RV rental in Shelter Cove is easy on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to view listings where hosts welcome four-legged guests, then message the host with your dog's size and breed to confirm. Dogs are allowed on leash throughout much of the King Range National Conservation Area, including Black Sands Beach, and they are welcome at Shelter Cove RV Campground. Pro tip: pack a tie-out and extra towels, because that black sand gets everywhere, in the best possible way.
blm.gov/visit/king-rangeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Shelter Cove?
Yes, RV delivery in Shelter Cove is one of the smartest ways to enjoy the Lost Coast, especially given the steep, winding 45-minute drive on Shelter Cove Road from Highway 101. Many RVezy hosts in Humboldt County will deliver your motorhome rental directly to Shelter Cove RV Campground, Tolkan Campground, or a private property, set it up, level it, hook up utilities, and walk you through how everything works. Filter for Delivery on the search page and message the host to confirm pricing (usually a flat fee plus a per-mile rate from Garberville or Eureka). It is the easiest way to enjoy Shelter Cove without driving a big rig down the mountain yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shelter%20Cove%2C%20CaliforniaHow does mileage work, and what's the driving range from Shelter Cove?
Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies and you will see them clearly on each listing, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for relaxed exploration. From Shelter Cove, you can reach Humboldt Redwoods State Park in about 1 hour (50 miles), the Avenue of the Giants in about 75 minutes, Eureka in roughly 2 hours (75 miles), Redwood National Park in about 3 hours, and San Francisco in roughly 5 hours (230 miles). Pro tip: if you are planning an RV road trip from Shelter Cove up the Redwood Coast, an unlimited-mileage rental almost always pays for itself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shelter%20Cove%2C%20CaliforniaWhere can I park or camp my RV in Shelter Cove?
You have great options for RV camping in Shelter Cove, ranging from full hookups to scenic boondocking. Shelter Cove RV Campground & Deli on Machi Road offers full hookups, ocean views, a deli, and is steps from the boat launch. Just outside town, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) runs Tolkan Campground (off King Peak Road) and Wailaki and Nadelos Campgrounds (off Chemise Mountain Road), each with picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets but no hookups. For something quieter, Mattole Campground sits at the northern Lost Coast trailhead. Pro tip: BLM sites are first-come, first-served, so arrive by early afternoon on weekends.
blm.gov/visit/king-rangeWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Shelter Cove?
Shelter Cove enjoys a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, so the sweet spot for an RV trip is May through October. Summer highs sit at a comfortable 66 to 70°F with dry, sunny days, perfect for tidepooling at Mal Coombs Park and hiking the Lost Coast Trail. May, September, and early October are the local insider's pick: warm enough for the beach, fewer crowds, and easier campsite bookings. Winters are mild (highs around 54°F) but very wet, with November through March bringing heavy rain that can cause road closures. If you're craving stormwatching with a heated RV and a deli sandwich, winter has its own moody magic.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=40.030415588000494&lon=-124.07308557999971I've never driven an RV before. Is Shelter Cove a good first trip?
Absolutely, first time renting an RV can be a blast on the Lost Coast, especially if you set yourself up right. Every RVezy host gives you a thorough orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and waste tanks. For a first-timer's RV rental in Shelter Cove, choose a campervan or smaller Class C (under 25 feet), which handles Shelter Cove Road's switchbacks much more easily than a big Class A. Better yet, book a host who offers delivery so you skip the steep mountain descent entirely. Pro tip: leave Garberville before noon so you're driving the curvy section in daylight.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/14775What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so help is one call away whether you've got a flat on Briceland-Thorn Road or a tripped breaker at the campground. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick questions about the RV. Keep in mind cell service is spotty between Garberville and Shelter Cove, so screenshot your roadside number before you lose signal. For local emergencies, the King Range Project Office in Whitethorn (707-986-5400) is a great resource for trail and road conditions too.
blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/california/king-range-national-conservation-areaWhat are the best road trip routes from Shelter Cove?
An RV road trip from Shelter Cove unlocks some of California's most epic coastline. Top routes include: north to Eureka and Redwood National Park (about 3 hours of ocean cliffs and towering redwoods), east to Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the Avenue of the Giants (about 1 hour, a must-drive scenic byway), south to Mendocino along Highway 1 (around 4 hours of dramatic Pacific bluffs), and a longer loop down to San Francisco (about 5 hours, 230 miles). Cross-border travel rules vary by host, so confirm any trips outside California with your host before booking. Pro tip: the Avenue of the Giants is your unmissable detour.
nps.gov/redw/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Shelter Cove RV trip?
Fuel is the big variable, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 MPG. Gas prices in rural Humboldt County typically run $0.40 to $0.80 per gallon above the California average, and Shelter Cove itself has limited fueling, so top off in Garberville or Redway before the 23-mile climb in. For a 4-night Shelter Cove RV trip with 400 total miles, budget roughly $150 to $300 in fuel depending on rig size. Pro tip: download GasBuddy before you leave cell coverage in Redway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Shelter Cove?
For the best campgrounds near Shelter Cove, book 2 to 4 months ahead for summer weekends and at least 6 months ahead for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Shelter Cove RV Campground books direct at sheltercoverv.net or by phone. BLM campgrounds in the King Range (Tolkan, Wailaki, Nadelos, Mattole) are first-come, first-served year-round and don't take reservations, so arrive by early afternoon on summer Fridays. State park campgrounds nearby (like Humboldt Redwoods) use ReserveCalifornia and open six months in advance to the day. Pro tip: midweek arrivals dramatically improve your chances at any first-come site.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=425What should I know about driving to Shelter Cove?
Here's the honest scoop so you arrive relaxed: the only road into Shelter Cove is Briceland-Thorn/Shelter Cove Road, a paved but steep, narrow, and twisty 23-mile mountain route that takes about 45 minutes from Redway off Highway 101. It's totally doable in a small to mid-size RV (under 30 feet) if you take it slow, use low gears on descents, and yield at pullouts. Bigger rigs (35 feet plus) should strongly consider RV delivery in Shelter Cove from a local host. Watch for fog along the coast, occasional rockfall in winter, and free-range deer at dusk. Pro tip: fill up your fuel and water tanks in Redway before the climb.
roads.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Shelter Cove?
Expectations are easy to set: Shelter Cove RV Campground & Deli offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), showers, a dump station, a deli, and ocean views, perfect for a comfortable basecamp. BLM campgrounds in the King Range (Tolkan, Wailaki, Nadelos, Mattole) provide vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings but no hookups and limited or no potable water, so fill your fresh tank before heading up. The closest dump stations are at Shelter Cove RV Campground and at Benbow KOA near Garberville. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a surge protector, which solves 90% of hookup surprises on the Lost Coast.
blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/california/king-range-national-conservation-areaWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Shelter Cove?
Most RVs on RVezy come trip-ready with comfortable beds (sleeping 2 to 8 depending on size), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and dining seating with seatbelts for travel. Many include a generator, solar, outdoor speakers, a TV, awning, and outdoor chairs, which are gold for sunset views over the Pacific. Cell and WiFi service is spotty along the Lost Coast, so download maps and entertainment in advance. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and check the amenities list to match your crew's must-haves before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Shelter%20Cove%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons can I get with my Shelter Cove RV rental?
Hosts offer lots of helpful extras to customize your campervan rental in Shelter Cove or motorhome trip. Common add-ons include linens and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camping chairs and tables, generators, paddleboards or kayaks (perfect for Shelter Cove's protected cove), bikes for cruising the Paradise Royale trails, and extra propane. Pickup and dropoff times are set by the host on the listing; most allow 4-hour windows in the afternoon for pickup and morning for return. If you want delivery to a Shelter Cove campground, message the host before booking. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during checkout, it's usually cheaper than à la carte.
blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/california/king-range-national-conservation-areaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly when you book, with no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held before pickup and released after your trip, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues on your RV rental in Shelter Cove, take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's instructions on dumping tanks and refueling, and stick to the agreed mileage. Pro tip: keep your fuel receipt from Redway, it is the perfect proof if questions ever come up.
