Campgrounds and RV parks near Squirrel Mountain Valley, CA

Lake Isabella anchors most trips. The reservoir is open to fishing year round and has public boat ramps, marina rentals, and roughly 40 miles of shoreline with coves and beaches for swimming and paddling. The Kern River, designated Wild and Scenic above Kernville, is one of California's premier whitewater rivers in late spring and offers tubing, kayaking, and fly fishing once flows drop in summer. Hiking, mountain biking, and OHV routes run through the Sequoia National Forest, and the Trail of 100 Giants sequoia grove is a feasible day trip north on the Western Divide Highway. Kernville itself has a small museum, riverside parks, and outfitters that rent rafts and run shuttle trips. Wildlife viewing, stargazing, and gold-panning sites round out the area.

Summer is the busy season. Daytime highs at lake elevation often push into the upper 80s and 90s F (around 30 to 35 C), and weekend campgrounds at Lake Isabella and along the Kern River fill quickly, especially around the Fourth of July. Booking eight or more weeks ahead is advisable for any developed Forest Service site or private RV park. Wind on the exposed lakeshore is common in the afternoon. Fire restrictions are routine from late spring into fall, and the Sequoia National Forest may suspend campfires, charcoal, or stove use during high fire danger; campfire permits are required outside of designated recreation sites. Spring is peak whitewater season as snowmelt fills the upper Kern. Wildflowers bloom across the Kern River Valley from March through May. Fall brings cooler nights, lower crowds, and good fishing. Winter is mild at lake elevation but cold at higher ground; rain peaks in January and light snow can dust the surrounding ridges. Some seasonal Forest Service campgrounds close in winter, while Auxiliary Dam, Old Isabella, South Fork, Paradise Cove, and most Upper Kern sites remain open year round, alongside the private parks.

Most lakeside Forest Service sites are open and exposed, with limited shade, dirt or paved pads, vault or flush toilets, and potable water at developed loops. RV hookups are concentrated at the private parks in town and along the river: expect full or partial hookups, Wi-Fi of varying quality, laundry, and pools at the larger resorts. Cell coverage is reasonable in the town of Lake Isabella and Kernville but drops out quickly in side canyons. Roads in are paved on Highways 178 and 155, with steep grades through the Kern River Canyon that demand low gear and patient driving for towables. Bring shade, extra water, and bear-aware food storage. Glass containers are prohibited along the Upper Kern, Lower Kern, and the shoreline of Isabella Lake.
