Campgrounds and RV parks near Twentynine Palms, CA

Joshua Tree National Park is the main draw. Day hikes from the campgrounds include Barker Dam, Hidden Valley Nature Trail, Skull Rock, and Ryan Mountain, all reachable within a short drive of the in-park sites. Hidden Valley sits at the center of the park's bouldering and sport-climbing routes, while Jumbo Rocks offers easy scrambling directly from the loop. The park is an International Dark Sky Park, and the campgrounds east of Jumbo Rocks, including Belle and White Tank, are well-positioned for stargazing thanks to their distance from town lights. Arch Rock near White Tank is a short walk and a common sunset stop. In Twentynine Palms itself, the Oasis of Mara behind the visitor center is a flat, shaded loop suitable for kids and rest days.

Travelers who enjoy warm, dry winters flock to Joshua Tree from October through May, when temperatures hover between 70-90 degrees during the day and drop to a 40-60 degree range at night. Spring, roughly mid-February through April, is the busiest stretch. Daytime highs are comfortable, wildflowers can bloom after wet winters, and weekend sites at the reservation campgrounds inside Joshua Tree typically sell out as soon as the booking window opens. Wind events are common in spring, so awnings and slide toppers should be retracted at night. Fall, from October into early December, is the second peak. Temperatures drop back into a workable range and crowds thin compared to spring, though weekends still book out. Summer is the park's off-season due to the uncomfortably-high desert heat. Daytime highs routinely exceed 100°F at lower elevations, and the park advises against strenuous daytime activity. Winter is the quietest season with cold nights that can drop below freezing at park elevations, but daytime conditions are often clear and pleasant for hiking. Propane furnace capacity should be confirmed before a winter trip.

In-park sites are dry. There are no hookups or drinking water in the campground at Belle, Jumbo Rocks, White Tank, or Hidden Valley, so RVs should arrive with full fresh tanks. Vault toilets are the standard. Potable water is available at Cottonwood Campground, Park Headquarters and the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center in Twentynine Palms, Black Rock Nature Center, and Indian Cove Ranger Station. In town, Twentynine Palms Resort: RV Park Cottages Golf offers full hookups. Sites are set among granite boulders and decomposed-granite pads, and many are uneven, so leveling blocks are useful. Generator hours are restricted inside the park. Cell coverage is weak to nonexistent past the entrance stations. Wildlife encounters typically involve coyotes, ground squirrels, and ravens, and food must be stored inside the RV at all times.
