Camping near Wofford Heights, California
Wofford Heights sits on the west shore of Lake Isabella in Kern County, in the southern Sierra Nevada at an elevation of roughly 2,680 feet. The town is a practical base for RV trips built around Lake Isabella, the Upper and Lower Kern River, and the surrounding Sequoia National Forest. State Route 155 connects the town north to Kernville and south to the community of Lake Isabella, so most named campgrounds in the valley sit within a 10 to 20 minute drive.
The area mixes full-hookup private resorts with eight Forest Service developed campgrounds ringing the reservoir, plus shoreline camping areas such as Auxiliary Dam and Old Isabella Road. Closest to Wofford Heights, RV travelers commonly use Frandy Park Campground, Camp Kernville, Kern River Sequoia RV Resort at Camp James, KRS RV Resort at Camp James, and Rivernook Campground, all clustered along the Kern River in and around Kernville. Lake Isabella covers about 11,000 surface acres and is one of the larger reservoirs in Southern California, drawing boaters, anglers, windsurfers, and whitewater rafters.
Things to do near Wofford Heights
The Kern River is the main draw. Outfitters in Kernville run guided whitewater trips on the Upper Kern in spring and early summer, and the slower stretches near Kernville are popular for tubing, with float-and-walk-back access from operators like Kern River Sequoia RV Resort at Camp James. Lake Isabella supports boating, waterskiing, swimming, windsurfing, and year-round fishing for bass, trout, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Hikers can pick up Sequoia National Forest trails for day hikes, mountain biking, and bird watching at the Kern River Preserve. Climbers head to the granite at Keyesville. For a longer drive, the Trail of 100 Giants in the Giant Sequoia National Monument is roughly an hour north of the valley.

Lake Isabella is busiest between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when warm water and reliable sunshine pull crowds from Los Angeles and Bakersfield. Summer afternoons routinely climb past 95°F at lake elevation, and shaded riverside sites fill weeks ahead. Spring is the strongest shoulder season: wildflowers bloom, fishing is productive before crowds arrive, and Upper Kern flows peak with Sierra snowmelt, making it the prime whitewater window. Early fall, especially September weekdays, offers warm water with thinner crowds.
Winter is mild at the lake but cold overnight, with most precipitation falling December through March. Snow is uncommon at lake elevation but more frequent in the surrounding higher country. Many Forest Service campgrounds around the lake stay open year-round, though some water systems and loops close in the off-season. Fire restrictions are common from late spring through fall; check current orders with the Kern River Ranger District before arrival.
How to book campgrounds near Wofford Heights
Forest Service campgrounds around Lake Isabella operate under a concessionaire program with ExplorUS and are reserved through Recreation.gov, generally at least seven days before arrival. A portion of sites at most developed campgrounds is held for first-come, first-served use, which can work midweek but rarely on summer weekends. Group sites require reservations. Private campgrounds in and near Wofford Heights and Kernville, including Frandy Park Campground, Camp Kernville, Kern River Sequoia RV Resort at Camp James, KRS RV Resort at Camp James, and Rivernook Campground, are booked directly through each operator. For summer holiday weekends, book riverside and full-hookup sites well in advance. BLM dispersed areas such as Keyesville do not take reservations.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a dry, high-desert-meets-river setting: oak and pine on the slopes, cottonwoods along the Kern, and open shoreline at the reservoir. Afternoon winds are common at exposed lakeside sites, particularly on the south end near Auxiliary Dam, and the lake is one of California's more popular windsurfing spots. River currents on the Upper Kern can be powerful and have a long record of fatalities; obey posted signs and use outfitters for whitewater sections. Cell coverage is patchy outside the towns of Wofford Heights, Lake Isabella, and Kernville. Larger rigs do well on the paved highways and at private resorts, but some BLM access roads are dirt and can be rough after storms. Stock up on groceries, fuel, and propane in Lake Isabella or Kernville before heading out.

fs.usda.gov/r05/sequoiaCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Wofford Heights?

Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Wofford Heights and surrounding areas, meaning they will drive the RV to your campground, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. That is perfect if you are booking a site at Tillie Creek, Boulder Gulch, Live Oak, or Pioneer Point and would rather not tow a 30-foot trailer up Highway 178 yourself. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see who offers it. Pro tip: ask about delivery fees up front, hosts often charge a flat rate plus a small per-mile fee for spots beyond Lake Isabella.

recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232819When is the best time to visit Wofford Heights in an RV?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for a Wofford Heights RV trip. From March through May, daytime temps run a pleasant 65 to 80°F, wildflowers blanket the Kern River Valley, and Lake Isabella fills up after winter rain. September through November brings cooler 60s to 70s, fall colors along the Kern River, and great trout fishing. Summer (June to August) is hot, often 95 to 105°F, but evenings cool down nicely thanks to the 2,600-foot elevation, and the lake is prime for boating. Winter is quieter and mild in town but can bring snow up at Alta Sierra Ski Resort 30 minutes away. Pro tip: book May or October for the perfect mix of weather and uncrowded campgrounds.
weather.gov/hnx/I'm a first time RV renter. Will I actually be able to do this?
Yes, and Wofford Heights is one of the easiest places in California to learn. First time renting an RV here means you'll get a full walkthrough from your host at pickup, they'll demo the water, propane, slide-outs, generator, and dump procedure, and answer every question. You can message them anytime during your trip too, and RVezy support is available 24/7 if you get stuck. The roads around Lake Isabella are wide, well-paved, and lightly trafficked compared to coastal California. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop on Burlando Road or Evans Road before heading out to your campground, you'll feel like a pro within 20 minutes. Choosing delivery for your first trip removes the driving question entirely.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental in the Kern River Valley includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on Highway 155, a dead battery at Tillie Creek, or a tow needed off Sierra Way is just a phone call away. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick questions like 'how do I reset the inverter?' For mechanical or trip emergencies, RVezy's customer support team is available around the clock. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before leaving the host's driveway, and note that cell service is best on Verizon in the Wofford Heights and Lake Isabella area, with weaker coverage deeper in Sequoia National Forest.
chp.ca.gov/programs-services/services-information/freeway-service-patrolWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Wofford Heights?
Wofford Heights is a launchpad for some of California's most underrated drives. Loop Highway 155 around Lake Isabella for an easy first day (about 40 miles). Head north on Mountain Highway 99 to Kernville and continue up the Wild and Scenic Kern River toward Johnsondale Bridge and the Trail of 100 Giants. For a bigger adventure, take Highway 178 east toward Death Valley National Park (about 2.5 hours) or west to Bakersfield and on to the coast. Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but interstate trips across the U.S. are great with host approval. Pro tip: avoid Sherman Pass Road in winter, it closes seasonally with snow.
fs.usda.gov/r05/sequoiaHow much will fuel cost and what kind of mileage do these RVs get?
Budget smart and you will be fine. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 9 to 13 MPG, Class A rigs run 7 to 10 MPG, and tow setups depend on your truck. Gas prices in the Kern County area typically run a bit lower than coastal California cities. There are several stations in Wofford Heights and Lake Isabella, but stations thin out fast once you head into Sequoia National Forest, so top off before climbing toward Kernville or Sherman Pass. Pro tip: a typical 3-night, 200-mile motorhome trip around Lake Isabella usually runs $80 to $130 in fuel. Plan one fuel stop per day and you will never be caught short.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wofford Heights?
For summer weekends and holidays, book six months out, that's the maximum window on Recreation.gov, which handles reservations for Tillie Creek, Boulder Gulch, Live Oak, Pioneer Point, Hungry Gulch, and the rest of the U.S. Forest Service campgrounds around Lake Isabella. For midweek summer trips or shoulder-season weekends, two to four weeks ahead usually works. Private parks like the Lake Isabella/Kern River KOA and KRS RV Resort @ Camp James book directly through their websites. Pro tip: a portion of Forest Service sites are held as first-come, first-served, so if you strike out online, arrive Thursday morning and roll the dice, the campground hosts can point you to open spots.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2980What are local driving conditions like around Wofford Heights?
Driving here is mellow compared to most of California. Highways 155 and 178 are well-maintained, two-lane mountain roads with gentle grades and beautiful Kern River views. Things to watch for include the winding climb up Kern Canyon on Highway 178 from Bakersfield (take it slow in a tall RV, especially in afternoon crosswinds), occasional cattle on Highway 155 over Greenhorn Summit, and summer thunderstorms that can drop quick downpours. Winter sometimes brings snow above 4,000 feet on the Highway 155 west grade toward Glennville. Pro tip: if Kern Canyon makes you nervous, choose RV delivery in Wofford Heights and skip the drive entirely, the RV will be waiting at your campsite.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Wofford Heights?
Expect a nice range depending on where you stay. Forest Service campgrounds around Lake Isabella (Tillie Creek, Live Oak, Pioneer Point, Boulder Gulch) offer flush toilets, metered showers, potable water spigots, fire rings, picnic tables, and on-site RV dump stations (around $8 to $10). They typically do not have individual hookups. For full water, electric, and sewer hookups, head to the Lake Isabella/Kern River KOA in Weldon or KRS RV Resort @ Camp James in Kernville. There's also a year-round dump station at Camp 9 off Sierra Way that takes credit cards. Pro tip: fill your fresh-water tank before leaving town, and plan to dump every 3 to 4 days for a family of four.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/sequoia/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=78930&actid=29What's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Wofford Heights?
More than you might think. A typical motorhome rental in Wofford Heights comes with a real queen or king bed, sometimes bunk beds, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, a dinette, air conditioning, furnace, and a TV. Most include a generator for off-grid power, and many have solar panels, handy at first-come dispersed sites along the Upper Kern. Seatbelts are provided for the number of travelers the RV sleeps. Wi-Fi varies, cell hotspots work well in town but fade in canyons. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities tab carefully, and message the host to confirm linens, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs are included so you do not double-buy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wofford%20Heights%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Kern River Valley typically offer extras that make your trip easier. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, generators, propane fills, bike racks, and pet packages for your pet-friendly RV rental in Wofford Heights. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Wofford Heights, Lake Isabella, Kernville, or Bakersfield, with delivery offered for an extra fee. Mileage policies vary, some include 100 to 150 free miles per day, others offer unlimited. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, generator, and a linen package if it is your first trip, the small added cost is worth not loading up your own car with gear before heading up Kern Canyon.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Wofford%20Heights%2C%20CaliforniaHow does the security deposit and payment work?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and fully online, with no cash exchanged with the host. When you book your RV rental in Wofford Heights, you pay the rental total securely through the platform with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (amount varies by RV) and released after the trip assuming no damage and the RV is returned per the host's checkout instructions. Pro tip: take a quick video walkaround of the RV at pickup and at return, it protects everyone and makes deposit release smooth. Following the host's mileage, generator, and dump rules keeps your full deposit safe.
