Campgrounds near Yermo, California
Yermo sits in the Mojave Desert along Interstate 15, about 13 miles east of Barstow and roughly halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The unincorporated community is a division point on the former Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad line, and it serves as a practical overnight stop for RV travelers crossing the desert as well as a base for exploring nearby attractions.
The headline draw is Calico Ghost Town, a restored 1880s silver mining town that is part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system. The adjacent campground offers around 265 sites with full hookup, partial hookup, and no-hookup options, plus cabins and a bunkhouse. Within a short drive, RVers can also reach Barstow / Calico KOA Holiday near I-15, Newberry Mountain RV Park off I-40 in Newberry Springs, Lone Wolf Colony, Shady Oasis Campground, and Holcomb Valley Ranch farther south toward the San Bernardino Mountains. Together these properties cover everything from quick freeway pull-throughs to longer stays in cooler high-country forest.
Things to do near Yermo
Calico Ghost Town anchors most itineraries. Visitors can walk original 1880s buildings, ride a narrow-gauge train, try gold panning, tour a mine, and catch seasonal events the park hosts throughout the year. About 12 miles away, Rainbow Basin Natural Area is a Bureau of Land Management site and National Natural Landmark known for multi-colored rock formations, fossil beds, and a scenic loop drive on unpaved road. Other stops within easy reach include the Calico Early Man Site, the Western America Railroad Museum, the Route 66 Mother Road Museum in Barstow, the Desert Discovery Center, and Afton Canyon, one of the few places where the Mojave River flows above ground. Families often add Peggy Sue's 50's Diner and Eddie World in Yermo itself for a classic Route 66 break.

Yermo has a hot desert climate, so timing matters more here than at most North American destinations. Spring, roughly March through May, is the prime window: daytime highs are comfortable, nights are mild, and wildflowers can appear after wet winters. Fall, from late September into November, is the other strong shoulder, with cooling temperatures and quieter campgrounds after Labor Day.
Summer is intense. Afternoon highs in June, July, and August routinely push near or past 100°F, and shade is limited at desert sites. RVers traveling in summer should plan for early-morning hikes, strong air conditioning, and extra water. Calico Ghost Town remains open year-round but draws its biggest crowds during cooler months and around themed weekends.
Winter is generally mild during the day and cold at night, with occasional rain and very rare snow. It is a popular season for snowbirds heading between the Southwest and the coast, and freeway-adjacent parks like Barstow / Calico KOA Holiday see steady traffic.

We had a great experience renting this RV! Brian was an incredible host, super communicative, friendly, and quick to answer any questions we had before and during the trip. The RV itself was spotless, well-maintained. It had everything we needed to be comfortable, and you could tell the host really cares about providing a great experience for their renters. The pickup and drop-off option was great. We would absolutely rent from them again and highly recommend this setup to anyone looking for a stress-free getaway!

How to book campgrounds near Yermo
Reservation systems vary by operator. Calico Ghost Town Campground is run by San Bernardino County Regional Parks and takes camping reservations through the county parks reservation site or by phone, with on-site check-in handled by a ranger. Barstow / Calico KOA Holiday books through the KOA website and app. Private parks such as Newberry Mountain RV Park, Lone Wolf Colony, and Shady Oasis Campground typically reserve directly by phone or through their own websites, and Holcomb Valley Ranch handles bookings on its own site. For peak windows like spring break, holiday weekends, and Calico special-event weekends, reserve several weeks ahead. Mid-week off-season nights are usually available on short notice.
What RVers can expect
Most parks near Yermo are desert campgrounds, meaning gravel or hard-packed pads, open sky, big-rig access, and limited natural shade. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are common at the larger properties, and dump stations are widely available. Sites at Calico Ghost Town range from no-hookup to full hookup, the campground has two dump stations, hot showers, fire rings, and grills, and camping guests receive free admission to the ghost town. Barstow / Calico KOA Holiday sits just off I-15 with typical KOA family amenities. Newberry Mountain RV Park offers full-hookup pull-throughs, two stocked ponds with free fishing, and a pool. Expect wind, dust, and road or rail noise at freeway-adjacent parks, and cooler, greener surroundings if heading up to Holcomb Valley Ranch in the mountains.

An RV rental in Yermo is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Mojave Desert and the LA to Las Vegas corridor. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Yermo and Barstow area typically start around $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A coaches range from $250 to $400 nightly. Mid-week stays in spring and fall almost always cost less than summer weekends. Booking early, staying 5+ nights, and choosing a host with generous mileage are easy ways to score a cheap RV rental in Yermo. Many Yermo trips are stopovers between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, so picking up locally instead of in a big city often saves on delivery fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Yermo,CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Yermo?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Yermo, California. No commercial driver's license or RV endorsement is required for the motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers on RVezy, even larger Class A rigs. You will need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your original license along with an International Driving Permit from your home country. Most first-time renters in Yermo are surprised by how straightforward the process is.

Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Interstate 15 with confidence. Combined with roadside assistance that can reach you across the Mojave from Yermo to Calico to Afton Canyon, you will feel covered from pickup to drop-off. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Yermo RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to lock in your trip. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every booking, not the host, and it includes a short grace period right after you book so you can commit with confidence. Refund amounts after that depend on how far out from your trip you cancel, and special circumstances such as natural disasters may be considered. You will see the full cancellation details during checkout and in your booking confirmation, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip if anything changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Yermo RV trip?
Absolutely, Yermo is a fantastic dog-friendly destination, and pet-friendly RV rentals in Yermo are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see every host who welcomes furry travelers (some charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is shown upfront). Once you're here, the Barstow/Calico KOA Holiday has off-leash space for dogs to stretch out, and dogs are welcome on leash throughout Calico Ghost Town Regional Park and on most BLM trails in the Rainbow Basin area. Pro tip: desert pavement gets brutally hot in summer, so plan walks for early morning or after sunset and bring booties for July and August trips.
blm.gov/visit/rainbow-basinCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Yermo?
Yes, RV delivery in Yermo is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if you have never driven a motorhome before. Many local hosts will deliver the RV right to Calico Ghost Town Regional Park, the Barstow/Calico KOA Holiday, or a private property in the Yermo, Daggett, or Newberry Springs area. They will level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer this, then message them directly with your destination for an exact quote. It is the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Yermo without ever getting behind a big wheel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Yermo,CaliforniaHow far can I drive on a typical Yermo RV rental?
Yermo sits at the crossroads of Southern California's best road trips, so mileage matters. Most RVezy hosts in Yermo offer between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and many will offer RV rental with unlimited mileage on longer bookings — just message to ask. From Yermo, you're about 13 miles to Barstow, 110 miles to Las Vegas, 130 miles to Joshua Tree National Park, 150 miles to Los Angeles, and 165 miles to Death Valley's Furnace Creek. If your itinerary stacks up bigger miles, look for hosts advertising unlimited mileage or negotiate a flat add-on. Pro tip: filling up in Barstow is almost always cheaper than at the I-15 truck stops east of town.
nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Yermo?
Yermo has some of the most underrated desert camping in California. The best campgrounds near Yermo include Barstow/Calico KOA Holiday (full hookups, pool, family-friendly, right off I-15), Calico Ghost Town Regional Park Campground (full hookups plus free entry to the historic silver-mining ghost town), Owl Canyon Campground in Rainbow Basin (BLM-managed, dramatic rock formations, $6 a night, no hookups), and Afton Canyon Campground (the 'Grand Canyon of the Mojave,' great for stargazing). For full-resort vibes, the Oasis at Death Valley sits about two hours north. Book Calico Ghost Town on ReserveCalifornia and KOA directly. Pro tip: weekends in March and October fill up six to eight weeks ahead, so reserve early.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=23308When is the best time to visit Yermo in an RV?
Yermo is a year-round RV destination, but the sweet spot is October through April when daytime highs are a perfect 60 to 80°F and nights cool into the 40s. March and November are the gold-standard months: wildflower season in spring, crisp clear skies in fall, and very few crowds at Calico. December and January average highs near 57°F with chilly desert nights, so you'll want a heated RV. Summer is intense — July highs average 98°F and have hit well over 110°F — so if you're booking June through September, prioritize a rig with strong air conditioning and a generator. Spring break and the Calico Days festival each fall are the busiest weekends.
weather.gov/vef/I've never driven an RV before. Is Yermo a good place to start?
Yermo is actually one of the friendliest places in California to try RVing for the first time. The roads are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked compared to LA or San Diego, and Interstate 15 has long straight stretches and large pull-outs that make driving a motorhome feel easy. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup — they'll walk you through the generator, slide-outs, tanks, propane, and driving tips before you leave the driveway. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, book a host who delivers and sets up. First time renting an RV? You'll be amazed how quickly it clicks once you're rolling toward Calico.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-informationWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You are never on your own out in the Mojave. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. Yermo's location right on Interstate 15 means service trucks from Barstow can reach most stranded travelers quickly. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app and knows their rig better than anyone, so they can often troubleshoot quirks in minutes. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip too.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Yermo RV rental to Nevada, Arizona, or Mexico?
A Yermo RV trip is perfect for crossing state lines. Las Vegas is just 110 miles up Interstate 15, and the Grand Canyon's South Rim is about 360 miles east, both popular RV road trip routes from Yermo. Travel across the U.S. is allowed on most RVezy rentals, but confirm with your host before you book since some set their own state-line limits. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border. Message the host from the listing to confirm your route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Yermo RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on any RV trip, but it's easy to plan for in Yermo. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and large Class A coaches 6 to 9 mpg. California gas prices in the Barstow/Yermo area generally run $0.40 to $0.80 above the national average, so budget around $5 per gallon as a safe estimate. A round-trip from Yermo to Las Vegas (about 220 miles) in a Class C will run roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: the Pilot, Love's, and EddieWorld stations along I-15 in Yermo and Barstow are usually cheaper than anything closer to Vegas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Yermo?
You've got more flexibility here than in California's coastal parks, but planning ahead pays off. Calico Ghost Town Regional Park, run by San Bernardino County, takes reservations up to six months out and weekends fill 4 to 8 weeks ahead, especially during Calico Days (October) and Civil War Reenactment (President's Day). The Barstow/Calico KOA Holiday books on koa.com and usually has same-week availability midweek, even in peak season. BLM sites like Owl Canyon and Afton Canyon are first-come, first-served and very rarely full outside spring weekends. Pro tip: arrive Thursday for the best site selection at Calico, then enjoy the quiet before weekend crowds roll in Friday afternoon.
parks.sbcounty.gov/park/calico-ghost-town/What are driving conditions like around Yermo?
Driving in and around Yermo is genuinely easy. Interstate 15 is a wide four-lane highway with gentle grades, and local roads through Calico, Daggett, and Newberry Springs are mostly flat and straight. The two things to plan for are wind and heat: gusts through Cajon Pass and along I-15 east of Barstow can hit 40+ mph, so high-profile rigs should drive in the early morning when winds are calmer. Summer pavement temps can push tire pressures, so check tires at every fuel stop. Watch for occasional sand drifts on Old Highway 58 after windstorms. Caltrans QuickMap is the best real-time tool for road closures and weather alerts before you head out.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities can I expect at Yermo-area campgrounds?
Yermo campgrounds run the full range from luxury hookups to off-grid desert sites, so you can pick the experience you want. Barstow/Calico KOA Holiday and Calico Ghost Town RV Park both offer 30/50-amp full hookups, water, sewer, free Wi-Fi, hot showers, and on-site dump stations. BLM campgrounds like Owl Canyon and Afton Canyon are dry camping only (vault toilets, no hookups) so you'll rely on your RV's tanks, batteries, and generator. The nearest public dump station and potable water fill is at the Barstow/Calico KOA, and there's another at the Flying J truck stop on Lenwood Road in Barstow. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving I-15, since options thin out fast once you head into the desert.
blm.gov/visit/owl-canyon-campgroundWhat is typically included inside an RV rental in Yermo?
RVezy rentals in Yermo come ready for the desert. Expect a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, cookware, and dishes, a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 10 depending on the rig, climate-controlled cabin with roof air conditioning and propane furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Most include a generator (essential for summer AC when you are off-grid near Calico or Afton Canyon), an awning for shade, and outdoor camp chairs. Many hosts add TVs, Wi-Fi hotspots, Bluetooth speakers, and starter kits with linens and kitchenware. Every listing shows exactly what is included, so you can compare side by side. In summer, prioritize rigs with dual roof ACs to stay comfortable when temps top 100°F.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Yermo,CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Yermo hosts offer plenty of flexibility to customize your trip. Common add-ons include generator hours (often $3 to $5 per hour beyond a daily allotment), unlimited mileage upgrades, linen and kitchen kits ($50 to $100), bike racks, kayak/SUP racks, propane refills, and dump-and-fill service at return. Pickup is usually at the host's location in Yermo, Barstow, Daggett, or Newberry Springs, and most hosts allow a 30-minute orientation window so you're never rushed. RV delivery in Yermo to local campgrounds typically runs $2 to $4 per mile round-trip. Pro tip: ask your host for their generator and tank-dump preferences upfront, since clear expectations avoid surprise fees and earn 5-star reviews on both sides.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.75How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure on RVezy. You pay the full booking total upfront through the platform using a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanges with hosts. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and is released back to your card after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. The renter protection plan covers most damage scenarios, which keeps the deposit process smooth. Take a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off in Yermo, since the clear record helps make any deposit return fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow should I prepare for desert heat on a summer Yermo RV trip?
Summer in Yermo is a full-on desert adventure, and a little prep makes it comfortable. July highs average 98°F and can top 110°F, so book an RV with dual roof air conditioners and confirm the generator is in great shape (you'll need it to run AC when you're not plugged in). Drive early — leave by 7 a.m. to beat both heat and afternoon I-15 traffic toward Vegas. Carry at least one gallon of water per person per day, plus extra for the dog. Park with the door facing away from the afternoon sun and deploy your awning. Shoulder seasons (March, April, October, November) are honestly the smarter play if you want cooler hiking weather at Rainbow Basin and Calico.
