Campgrounds and RV parks near Basalt, CO

Fly fishing drives most trips. The stretch of the Fryingpan from Ruedi Dam down to the confluence with the Roaring Fork River is designated Gold Medal Waters by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Special regulations require artificial flies and lures only, and all trout except brown trout must be released, with a limit of two fish over 14 inches. Ruedi Reservoir supports boating, paddling, swimming, and lake fishing, with a boat ramp and several picnic areas. Ruedi is known for lake trout, rainbow and brown trout, kokanee salmon, and yellow perch. Hikers can pick up the Ruedi Trail on the north side of the reservoir, an eight-mile climb of over 3,000 feet toward Red Table Mountain. Day trips from Basalt include downtown Aspen, the Maroon Bells scenic area, Glenwood Springs hot springs, and the Glenwood Canyon bike path. Carbondale, Redstone, and the Crystal River valley extend the loop to the west.

The camping window is dictated by elevation and snowpack. Forest Service campgrounds around Ruedi and along the Fryingpan generally operate from mid to late May through early October, with some lower-elevation private parks open longer. Higher sites close once overnight temperatures drop and water systems are shut off. Summer is peak. Weekends and holidays fill months in advance, and reservations through Recreation.gov are standard for the more-used spots, especially from June through August. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August. Fire restrictions may be imposed at any time due to hot, dry conditions, at which point campfires and charcoal fires are not allowed; the White River National Forest entered Stage 2 fire restrictions in late June of the most recent season, prohibiting campfires and charcoal forest-wide while allowing gas stoves. Shoulder-season trips in September bring aspen color, cooler nights, and lighter crowds, but higher sites close early. Winter access along Frying Pan Road is limited by snow and ice; lower-valley private RV parks are the practical year-round option.

Forest Service campgrounds around Basalt are developed but rustic. Sites are equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings, and most have vault toilets and drinking water from hydrants. Mollie B has flush toilets and a boat ramp. Electrical hookups are not available at the Ruedi Reservoir loops, and the Ruedi Marina day-use dump station is currently closed; the nearest dump stations are in Silt and Edwards. Bears are active. Bear-proof food lockers are provided at each site and bear-proof trash receptacles at the campground, and all food, beverages, trash, and scented items must be stored when unattended. Cell service is limited once vehicles leave the Highway 82 corridor. Nights are cold even in July at reservoir elevations, and afternoon storms can move in quickly. Mandatory boat inspections apply to any vessel entering Ruedi Reservoir.
