Camping near Delta, Colorado
Delta sits at the confluence of the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers in western Colorado, at roughly 4,950 feet of elevation. The town works as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the North Fork Valley, Grand Mesa, the Uncompahgre Plateau, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to the southeast. U.S. Highway 50 runs directly through town, giving straightforward access to Montrose, Grand Junction, and points along the Western Slope.
Private RV parks cluster along Highway 50 and the river corridors. Four Seasons River Inn & RV Park and Riverwood Resort on the Gunnison sit close to the town center with full-hookup sites and big-rig access. Valley Sunset RV Ranch LLC and Uncompahgre River RV Park offer additional full-service options nearby, and Aspen Trails Campgrounds serves travelers heading toward Cedaredge and Grand Mesa.
Public land is close at hand. BLM lands along the Gunnison and Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area provide dispersed camping for self-contained rigs, while national park and national forest campgrounds sit within an hour's drive.
Things to do around Delta
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is the marquee day trip, reached via Highway 50 and CO 347 east of Montrose. The South Rim offers overlooks, short rim trails, and ranger programs in summer. Sweitzer Lake State Park, one mile south of Delta, is a day-use area with fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming, and wildlife viewing on a 137-acre lake. Confluence Park in Delta itself is walkable from several in-town RV parks and has a lake loop suitable for kids and dogs.
Grand Mesa National Forest rises north of town and holds hundreds of small lakes, cool summer temperatures, and scenic drives along the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway. West of Delta, Escalante Canyon and the Dominguez-Escalante NCA offer rock art panels, side canyons, and river access. The North Fork Valley toward Paonia and Hotchkiss is known for orchards, farm stands, and small wineries.

Delta has a high-desert climate with four distinct seasons. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and lighter crowds at nearby parks. Wildflowers appear on the mesas in May, and cottonwoods turn gold along the rivers in October.
Summer brings hot, dry days that regularly climb into the 90s at valley elevations, with cooler air available on Grand Mesa above 10,000 feet. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August during the North American Monsoon, and flash-flood watches can affect side canyons and dispersed sites on public land. At Black Canyon of the Gunnison, the South Rim Campground has experienced wildfire damage in recent seasons, so check current conditions on the park website before planning a stay.
Winter is quieter. Most private RV parks in town stay open year-round, but water hookups can be shut off during hard freezes. Black Canyon's North Rim Road closes in winter, and higher elevations on Grand Mesa require snow tires or chains.
How to book a site near Delta
Private parks in Delta take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites, and several are also listed on aggregator platforms. Full-hookup sites at Four Seasons River Inn & RV Park, Riverwood Resort on the Gunnison, Valley Sunset RV Ranch LLC, Uncompahgre River RV Park, and Aspen Trails Campgrounds tend to book earliest for summer weekends, harvest season in September, and hunting seasons in the fall.
For public campgrounds inside Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, reservations are handled on Recreation.gov, with the South Rim Campground opening a six-month rolling window. Check the park website for current campground status before booking, as recent wildfire activity has affected loop availability. Colorado state park campgrounds are reserved through the CPW Shop portal up to six months in advance; note that Sweitzer Lake near Delta is day-use only, while nearby Crawford State Park offers overnight sites.
What to expect on the ground
Delta is a working agricultural town, not a resort destination. Expect ranch land, orchards, and easy access to grocery stores, propane, dump stations, and RV service on Highway 50. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town, but drops off quickly on public land, especially inside Black Canyon and on Grand Mesa.
Sites at the in-town RV parks are typically level and gravel, with mature shade trees along the river frontages. Trains pass through Delta on the north side of town, and travelers sensitive to noise should ask about site placement when booking. Bears are active in the surrounding foothills and at higher elevations, and food and scented items must be stored in hard-sided vehicles or bear boxes at national park campgrounds. Summer sun is intense at this elevation, so plan on sunscreen, extra water, and awnings or shade at your site.

Your pup will love sniffing along the Gunnison River Trail in Confluence Park right in town, and campgrounds at Sweitzer Lake State Park and Crawford State Park allow leashed dogs on trails and at sites. Pro tip: pack a long tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, summer pavement at lower elevations near Delta can get hot by mid-afternoon.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/SweitzerLakeCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Delta?
Yes, RV delivery is one of the easiest ways to start a Delta trip, especially if you're flying into Montrose Regional Airport or Grand Junction Regional Airport. Many Delta-area hosts will drive the RV to your campsite at Sweitzer Lake State Park, Crawford State Park, or a private property, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to find hosts who offer this service, then message them with your destination address for a delivery quote. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer for first-time renters and for families who want to skip towing on Highway 92's curvy stretches above the Black Canyon.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Delta,ColoradoHow far can I drive from Delta on a typical RV trip?

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park's South Rim is just over 30 miles southeast via Highway 50, Grand Mesa's lake-dotted top sits about 50 miles north via Highway 65, Montrose is 22 miles south, Telluride is roughly 90 miles, and Moab, Utah is about 130 miles west. Many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering an RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer RV road trip from Delta out to Mesa Verde (around 170 miles). nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Delta, CO for an RV trip?
Delta is surrounded by some of Colorado's best RV camping. Sweitzer Lake State Park sits just southeast of town with lakeside sites and easy paved access. Crawford State Park, about 30 miles southeast on Highway 92, has electric hookup sites and stunning views toward Needle Rock. Grand Mesa's Island Lake and Jumbo Campground (about 50 miles north on Highway 65) offer cool high-elevation forest sites ideal for summer. For Black Canyon access, the South Rim Campground inside the national park books up fast. Pro tip: reserve Colorado State Parks through CPWshop.com and federal sites on Recreation.gov, ideally 3 to 6 months in advance for July and August weekends.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/CrawfordWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Delta?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for an RV rental in Delta, Colorado, with the sweet spot running mid-May to late June and again in September. Daytime highs in Delta climb from the mid-60s in April to the upper 80s and low 90s in July, while nights stay refreshingly cool thanks to the roughly 4,950-foot elevation. July afternoons can hit the mid-90s, so many travelers prefer the shoulder months for hiking Black Canyon or fishing the Gunnison. Fall brings golden cottonwoods along the river and crisp 70s days, ideal for a Delta RV trip. Pro tip: aim for the third week of September to catch peak aspen color up on Grand Mesa without the summer crowds.
weather.gov/gjt/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Delta?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV in Delta is genuinely manageable because the area mixes wide, straight stretches of Highway 50 with low-traffic county roads, and the town itself is small and easy to navigate. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, dumping, and driving feel, and 24/7 roadside assistance comes with your booking. If you're nervous, start with a Class B campervan or a smaller travel trailer rather than a 30-foot Class A. Pro tip: do a short shakedown loop to Confluence Park before heading up Highway 65 to Grand Mesa, the climb gains several thousand feet and you'll want to know your brakes first.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I have an RV breakdown during my Delta trip?
You're covered. Every RV rental in Delta, CO booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so help is just a phone call away whether you're parked at Sweitzer Lake, climbing Highway 65 to Grand Mesa, or somewhere along Highway 50 between Delta and Montrose. The roadside team handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for questions about quirks specific to their RV. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN plate and note your mile-marker location before you call, cell service can be spotty in the canyons and giving dispatch precise info speeds things up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Delta RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RV rentals in Delta, and crossing into Utah for Moab or Arches (about 130 miles west) is one of the most popular RV road trips from Delta. Many hosts also allow travel to New Mexico, Arizona, and Wyoming, just confirm by messaging before you book. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and insurance do not extend across that border. Travel into Canada may be possible with host approval and proper documentation, so ask the host directly. Pro tip: a classic 7-day loop from Delta hits Black Canyon, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, and Arches, all reachable without leaving the Four Corners region.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Delta RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on any motorhome rental Delta trip, but Colorado gas prices on the Western Slope tend to run close to the state average. Plan on roughly 8 to 10 mpg for Class A and larger Class C motorhomes, 12 to 15 mpg for smaller Class C and travel trailer setups, and 18 to 22 mpg for Class B campervans. A round-trip from Delta to Black Canyon and back (about 65 miles) in a Class C might cost around $25 to $35 in fuel, while a weeklong 600-mile loop to Mesa Verde and Telluride generally runs $200 to $300. Pro tip: fill up in Delta or Montrose before heading toward Crawford or Paonia, smaller mountain towns often charge more per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Delta?
For the best campgrounds near Delta, lock in reservations 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, especially Memorial Day through Labor Day. Colorado State Parks like Sweitzer Lake and Crawford open bookings through Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPWshop.com) up to 6 months in advance, and they fill quickly for July and August. The South Rim Campground at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park books through Recreation.gov on the same 6-month rolling window. Grand Mesa's Forest Service sites also use Recreation.gov. Pro tip: if summer is sold out, look at dispersed camping on nearby public lands or weekday stays, midweek Tuesday-Thursday openings appear regularly even in peak July.
cpw.state.co.us/buyapply/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat are the local driving conditions like around Delta?
Driving an RV around Delta is friendlier than most of mountain Colorado. Highway 50 between Grand Junction and Montrose is wide, well-maintained, and mostly flat as it follows the Uncompahgre River through Delta. The bigger challenges come when you head up Highway 65 toward Grand Mesa (steep grades climbing past 10,000 feet) or Highway 92 along the north rim of Black Canyon (narrow with sharp curves). Summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up in July and August, and winter brings occasional snow and ice on the mesas. Pro tip: check COtrip.org from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) before heading into the high country, it shows live cameras and chain-law alerts that matter for taller motorhomes.
codot.gov/travelWhat amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Delta?
Campgrounds around Delta range from full-hookup comfort to rustic high-country sites, so you can match the experience to your RV. Sweitzer Lake State Park offers electric sites, potable water, and vault toilets, while Crawford State Park has electric hookups, restrooms, and a dump station. Up on Grand Mesa, Forest Service campgrounds like Island Lake have water spigots and vault toilets but no hookups, perfect for self-contained rigs. In-town options near Delta also offer dump stations and fresh-water fills. Pro tip: top off your fresh water in town before heading to Grand Mesa or the North Rim of Black Canyon, potable water on the mesa can be seasonal and turned off after early October.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/gmug/recarea/?recid=43040What's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Delta?
You'll find more comfort than you might expect. Most RV rentals in Delta come fully equipped with real beds (queen or king in the bedroom plus convertible dinettes and bunks in family rigs), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, and propane furnace heat. Many include a TV, and a growing number offer Wi-Fi hotspots, generators or solar, and outdoor speakers. Campervan rental Delta options like Sprinter-based Class Bs typically have a compact wet bath, two-burner cooktop, and a convertible bed. Seatbelts for travel are clearly noted on each listing. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and check the photo gallery carefully, RVezy listings show every interior detail so you know exactly what you're booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Delta,ColoradoWhat add-ons and pickup options do Delta RV hosts usually offer?
Delta hosts make customizing your trip easy. Common add-ons include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators, propane fire pits, bike racks, kayak racks, and pet packages, typically running $10 to $50 each per trip. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles around $0.30 to $0.50, and some offer unlimited mileage packages perfect for longer Western Slope loops. Pickup is usually at the host's property in or near Delta, with delivery available to Sweitzer Lake, Crawford, Grand Mesa, or the Montrose airport for a flat fee. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a bedding kit if you're flying in, you can step off your flight and into a ready-to-roll RV without buying or hauling gear.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Delta,ColoradoHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Delta RV rental?
Payment for your RV rental in Delta is handled securely through RVezy, never directly to the host, which keeps everything tracked and protected. You'll pay your full booking total upfront with a credit or debit card, including the nightly rate, service fee, protection plan, and any add-ons you selected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) and released back to your card after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to make sure your security deposit returns smoothly and avoids any back-and-forth about pre-existing scratches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Delta during winter or shoulder season?
Yes, and winter and shoulder-season RV rentals in Delta can be magical, with snow-dusted mesas, far fewer crowds, and rates often noticeably lower than peak summer. Delta itself sits at about 4,950 feet, so winter lows usually hover in the teens to mid-20s F, milder than the high country. Many Delta hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces, ideal for trips to Powderhorn Mountain Resort (about 35 miles north on Grand Mesa) or hot springs in Ouray (around 60 miles south). Filter for winter-ready listings and confirm shore-power and tank-heater features with the host. Pro tip: book a site with full hookups in winter so you can run heat off shore power and conserve propane for cooking.
