Ridgway Reservoir anchors most on-the-water activity. There is a boat ramp accessing the Uncompahgre River for boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, water sports, swimming and water skiing. A swim beach is reached by the short Wapati Trail from the Dutch Charlie area. Hikers and cyclists can pick from park trails. The Oak Leaf Trail is an easy, 0.9-mile loop that passes over the Uncompahgre River, and the longer Enchanted Mesa Trail runs about 6.9 miles out and back. The Uncompahgre River is a great spot to reel in some dinner, as are the two fishing ponds located near the Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Campground. Off-park, Orvis Hot Springs sits minutes away for soaking, and the towns of Ouray and Telluride are within about an hour for ice climbing, jeep roads, and mountain scenery. Billy Creek SWA is good for birding, with Dusky Grouse in the Gambel oak woodlands, Western Screech-Owl in the riparian forest, and elk and deer on the tract.

Summer is the peak window. Ridgway sits at high elevation with warm, dry days and cool nights, and July is typically the warmest month with daytime highs around 22°C. July is also the month with the most rainfall, when the rain falls for 21.3 days and typically aggregates up to 2.76 inches of precipitation from monsoon thunderstorms that continue into August. Reservoir use, hiking, and fishing all run at full tilt from late June through August, so state park sites fill early on weekends. Shoulder seasons work well for RV travel. Spring brings variable weather and lingering snow on high passes, while fall delivers cooler nights and aspen color across the San Juans. Access rules differ by property: public access to Billy Creek State Wildlife Area is prohibited from January 1 through April 30, except for hunting, fishing, and trapping along the Uncompahgre River corridor from US Highway 550 to 100 feet from the east bank of the river, and the Porter Tract only permits camping by licensed hunters during big-game seasons plus three days before and after. Winter camping is limited but available. Select campsites in Elk Ridge and Dakota Terraces at Ridgway State Park stay open with plowed, reservable sites, heated shower and restroom facilities, and a year-round dump station. Overnight lows regularly drop well below freezing.

Elevations around Loghill Village and Ridgway sit near 7,000 feet, so expect thinner air, strong sun, and cool nights even in summer. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August; morning starts are the reliable window for hiking and paddling. RV setup is straightforward at the developed campgrounds. Pa-Co-Chu-Puk provides full hookup 50-amp sites with individual water and sewer connections, and all campgrounds include modern camper service buildings with flush restrooms, free showers, and seasonal laundry facilities. During winter months, water hookups shut off at Dakota Terraces but community spigots remain functional throughout the loops. Supplies are limited on-site at the state park. The town of Ridgway (only about 5 miles to the south) has a couple of small stores, though options are pricy, and Montrose is about 17 miles to the north with discount and big box stores for groceries, camping supplies, or RV repair. Cell coverage in the wildlife areas is spotty, so download maps before leaving the highway.
