Camping near Brook Forest, Colorado
Brook Forest is a small mountain community in Jefferson County, Colorado, sitting in the foothills southwest of Evergreen at roughly 8,000 feet of elevation. The area sits between Denver's western suburbs and the higher Front Range, which puts a wide mix of campgrounds within an hour's drive.
The closest developed camping is at Staunton State Park, which offers 25 walk-in campsites with tent pads, picnic tables, bear-proof food storage, vault toilets, and water hydrants in the parking lots. For hookups and drive-in RV sites, travelers head north toward Genesee and Golden, or west along the I-70 corridor.
Chief Hosa Campground spans 58 acres within the 2,400 acres of Denver's Genesee Mountain Park, while Denver West / Central City KOA sits in the Rockies at an elevation of 8,490 feet, one mile above Central City and Black Hawk, and about 35 miles west of Denver. Cottonwood RV Camp and Dakota Ridge RV Park cover the lower-elevation, full-service end of the market closer to Golden.
Things to do around Brook Forest
Hiking and mountain biking dominate the area. Staunton State Park offers over 30 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with terrain ranging from high meadows to towering granite cliffs that also support rock climbing and wildlife viewing.
Families staying at Chief Hosa can drive short loops to see the city-owned bison herd in Genesee Mountain Park, then head down into Golden for the Coors tour, Clear Creek tubing, or the Colorado Railroad Museum. Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Evergreen Lake, and the casino towns of Black Hawk and Central City are all within a 45-minute drive.
Higher up, I-70 opens access to Idaho Springs, Georgetown, and Mount Blue Sky, giving RVers a wide menu of half-day trips without repositioning the rig.

The main camping window in the Brook Forest area runs from late spring through early fall. Chief Hosa Campground's RV and campground facilities are open May through the third week of September each year. The Denver West / Central City KOA runs limited services from early October through late April, does not take online or phone reservations during that period, and keeps water off at sites due to freezing temperatures.
Staunton is the outlier at higher elevation: it is open year-round for camping with reservations required, though winter access to walk-in sites depends on snow. Summer is peak season, with weekends filling weeks ahead, and late July and August often bring afternoon downpours from the North American monsoon.
Fire restrictions are common. No fires are permitted at Staunton, and Front Range campgrounds routinely go on stove-only or full fire bans during dry stretches. Check the county sheriff and CPW pages before departure.

We had a wonderful time. Elissa was very informative, responsive to any questions and very helpful with suggestions. We were first time van renters and we now have a desire to continue.

Just book it already! It’s the van you want! The van itself has everything you need! Spacious! Easy to drive and an amazing turning radius! And not bad in gas. The Host is even better! Super sweet, helpful and knowledgeable about Colorado! I had the most random questions and she’d answer them and get back to me promptly. I can’t wait to go back and explore more with EJ’s vans!

How to book campgrounds near Brook Forest
Each campground uses its own system. A reservation is required to camp at Staunton State Park; reservations can be made online at cpwshop.com or by phone at 1-800-244-5613, and can be made up to six months in advance of the arrival date. CPW notes that ReserveAmerica.com has limited functionality for CPW customers.
Chief Hosa Campground requires a camping reservation, and no in-person or phone payments are accepted, so book through Denver Parks and Recreation's online system. KOA reservations run through koa.com or the campground office, and Dakota Ridge RV Park and Cottonwood RV Camp take bookings direct through their operators.
Summer weekends near Denver sell out fast. Book Staunton and Chief Hosa the day the calendar opens for peak dates, and hold a backup along I-70 in case a preferred loop is full.
What to expect on the ground
Expect elevation. Brook Forest sits near 8,000 feet, and the Central City KOA sits around 8,490 feet, so drink plenty of water before arriving and give yourself time to acclimate. Nights are cool even in July, so pack layers.
Hookups vary widely. Chief Hosa has 24 RV sites with electric and water hookups, a dump station, and coin-op showers, while Staunton is walk-in tent camping only with no RV hookups. Dakota Ridge RV Park offers level, paved full-service sites in Golden with both pull-through and back-in options. Cottonwood RV Camp is a smaller full-hookup option.
Bears are active. Staunton is in black bear habitat, and all tent sites have large bear-proof boxes; store food, food-serving items, and even clothing that might smell of food inside the boxes. Treat every campsite in the foothills the same way.
