Campgrounds and RV parks near Dotsero, CO

The Colorado River is the main draw. Rafters and floaters use the Dotsero boat ramp for scenic flatwater floats down into Glenwood Canyon, and the Eagle River offers slower stretches suitable for beginners. Fishing access is available at multiple points along both rivers, including the Lava Flow Fishing Access on the Eagle River just south of the Dotsero Crater. The Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path is a paved, mostly flat route between the Colorado River and I-70 that runs from Glenwood Springs to Dotsero, with intermediate access at the No Name, Grizzly Creek, and Bair Ranch rest areas. It works well for family biking. Day trips from a Dotsero base include Glenwood Hot Springs and Iron Mountain Hot Springs to the west, Vail and Beaver Creek to the east, and Sylvan Lake for paddling and stocked trout fishing.

The main RV season in the Dotsero area runs roughly late May through September. Lower-elevation riverside parks along the Colorado River corridor, including Glenwood Canyon Resort and Ami's Acres Campgrounds, generally operate through the shoulder seasons, while higher sites become weather-dependent earlier and later in the year. Sylvan Lake State Park is open to the public year-round, with tent and RV camping, cabins, and yurts. Winter camping there is available on a first-come, first-served basis with limited amenities, and the posted winter camping window is November 1 through May 14. The park's group campground operates from mid-May through September only, and the Elk Run loop typically closes from November through April while Fisherman's Paradise and the cabins remain available year-round. Summer thunderstorms are common in the afternoons, and fire restrictions are frequently issued in the White River National Forest and Eagle County during dry stretches. Recent restrictions have prohibited open fires, campfires, and charcoal use in developed campgrounds and picnic areas, so check current status before arrival. Snow can affect I-70 through Glenwood Canyon from late fall into spring.

Expect narrow river corridors, active rail lines, and interstate traffic close by. Several campgrounds along the Colorado River sit near the Union Pacific tracks, so freight trains passing at night are common. Sites directly on the river are the most sought-after and book first. Rig-size limits vary. Some smaller properties in the area restrict rigs over about 30 feet due to tight driveways, while larger private resorts along the river accommodate bigger vehicles and offer full hookups. Confirm length, hookup type, and slide clearance before booking. Elevation ranges from about 6,150 feet in Dotsero to roughly 8,500 feet at Sylvan Lake, so allow time to acclimate, drink water, and expect cool overnight temperatures even in summer. Wildlife including deer, elk, and black bears is present, and food storage rules apply at most campgrounds.
