Campgrounds and RV parks near Hayden, CO

Water recreation centers on Elkhead Reservoir, the only flat-water recreation site in Moffat County, with 900 surface acres for boating, jet skiing, swimming at a seasonal beach, and fishing for bass, northern pike, crappie, and catfish. A reservoir loop trail connects Greenwood's Cove, Cedar Bend, and East Beach and is open to non-motorized use in spring, summer, and fall. The Yampa River runs through the valley and supports tubing, paddling, and trout fishing, with tubing conditions dependent on snowmelt and rainfall. In Steamboat Springs, a short drive east, RVers can access hot springs, shops, and the Yampa River Botanic Park. Hunters use Indian Run State Wildlife Area - North for access to adjacent public land, with elk, deer, bear, and grouse in the surrounding country.

Hayden has a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters, warm summers, and a short frost-free growing season. The prime RV window runs from late May through September, when daytime temperatures are comfortable and area roads and campgrounds are fully open. Elkhead Reservoir State Park is open for camping from May 1 through November 30, and winter camping is not available at the park. Summer brings the heaviest camping demand across the valley, driven by reservoir recreation, Yampa River floating, and events in Steamboat Springs. Reservations at Elkhead and the Steamboat Springs KOA Holiday fill early for holiday weekends and the peak July and August window. Fall is a shoulder season prized for aspen color and cooler nights; September and October also overlap with archery and rifle big-game seasons, and Craig-area campgrounds often tighten cancellation rules during hunting season. Winter closes many public campgrounds in the area. Steamboat Springs KOA Holiday operates year-round and winterizes RV sites during the ski season, roughly October through April.

Elevations in the Yampa Valley run around 6,300 to 6,700 feet, so nights stay cool even in midsummer and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Bring layers, and expect strong sun and dry air. Elkhead Reservoir has electric and non-electric sites across two campgrounds, with fire pits, picnic tables, shade shelters, and restrooms, but no potable water or on-site dump station. The nearest dump station is at Yampa River State Park, about 12 miles west of Elkhead, available starting May 1. The KOA properties in Craig and Steamboat Springs offer full hookups, laundry, showers, Wi-Fi, and big-rig pull-thrus. This is bear country and active wildfire country: store food properly, use bear-proof dumpsters where provided, and check current fire restrictions with Routt or Moffat County before arrival, as stage bans on open fires and charcoal are issued in dry periods.
