Camping near Hotchkiss, Colorado
Hotchkiss sits in the North Fork Valley on Colorado's Western Slope, a rural stretch of Delta County framed by Mt. Lamborn, the West Elk Mountains, and the Grand Mesa. The valley links the towns of Hotchkiss, Paonia, and Crawford along Highways 92 and 133, and it forms part of the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park lies roughly 40 minutes south, and Grand Mesa and the West Elk Wilderness are close by.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Mountain Valley Meadows RV Park and The Campground at Big B's Delicious Orchards sit closest to town, with Sage View Ranch just up Highway 133 toward Paonia. For a reservoir setting, Clear Fork and Iron Creek campgrounds inside Crawford State Park are about 10 miles south of Hotchkiss on Highway 92.
The area draws visitors for orchards, u-pick fruit, small wineries in the West Elks AVA, fishing, and easy access to Crawford Reservoir for boating and swimming.
Things to do near Hotchkiss
Crawford Reservoir anchors most water-based plans. The 400-acre lake is used for motorized and sail boating, water skiing, jet skiing, scuba diving in marked areas, and swimming at a roped-off peninsula beach with a beach house for changing and showers. Anglers target perch, crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike, catfish, and rainbow trout, and the park has an ADA-accessible fishing pier.
Agritourism is the other main draw. Big B's Delicious Orchards runs a u-pick orchard, cafe, farm store, and live music weekends through the growing season. The North Fork Valley is home to the West Elks AVA, with multiple wineries and cideries open for tastings.
Day trips include Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Needle Rock Natural Area east of Crawford, and the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway.

The prime RV window runs from late April through October. Iron Creek Campground at Crawford State Park is open from mid-April through the last hunting season in November, while Clear Fork operates year-round with reduced amenities in winter. Snow at Hotchkiss elevations typically starts in November and lingers through April, and January is the coldest and snowiest month.
Late May through June brings warm, dry days and the longest sunshine hours of the year, ideal for reservoir camping and hiking. July and August are the warmest months and coincide with u-pick cherry, apricot, and peach seasons at valley orchards. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in summer, and fire restrictions may be enacted during dry stretches.
September is a favorite for cooler nights, apple harvest, and the Mountain Harvest Festival in Paonia. October brings fall color and is also one of the wettest months of the year at Hotchkiss. Winter camping is possible at Clear Fork, but most private campgrounds close or limit services.
How to book a campsite
Crawford State Park is reservation-only. Sites at Clear Fork and Iron Creek are booked through Colorado Parks and Wildlife at cpwshop.com or by phone at 1-800-244-5613, with a rolling six-month advance booking window. Weekends and holidays fill quickly, so setting a calendar reminder for the six-month mark is worthwhile. A daily or annual Colorado state parks pass is required in addition to the camping fee.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. The Campground at Big B's Delicious Orchards books through Campspot, and Sage View Ranch accepts bookings through Hipcamp and directly through the ranch. Reserve well ahead for summer weekends, harvest events, and Cider Fest, which fill available sites.
What to expect on the ground
Crawford State Park sits at roughly 6,500 feet, so cool evenings are common even in summer. Iron Creek has 45 sites with water and electric hookups plus a dump station and hot showers. Clear Fork has 20 reservable sites, 15 with full hookups and 5 tent-only, along with flush and vault toilets and showers. Both campgrounds sit on the reservoir shoreline, though water levels fluctuate.
Big B's runs primarily rustic camping spread through a working orchard, with tent, RV, cabin, and glamping options. There are no utility hookups at the sites, though potable water spigots are available to refill tanks, and coin-operated showers and restrooms are near the cafe. Big rigs should confirm site access before arriving.
Sage View Ranch offers a small number of RV sites with electric and sewer hookups, tent sites, and unique lodging like a converted bus and tipi. Pets are not permitted on the property, and highway noise from Route 133 can carry to some sites.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Hotchkiss, CO
How much does an RV rental in Hotchkiss, CO typically cost?
Renting an RV in Hotchkiss is one of the more affordable ways to explore Colorado's North Fork Valley. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $275 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes around $250 to $400 per night. Hosts set their own pricing, so shoulder seasons like late April, May, and October often unlock the best rates, while summer peaks during Paonia Cherry Days and harvest festivals. Pro tip: filter for a cheap RV rental in Hotchkiss by booking mid-week and looking for travel trailers with delivery included. That combo often beats the cost of a Class A with mileage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hotchkiss%2C%20ColoradoDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Hotchkiss?
Good news, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hotchkiss. Colorado's standard Class R driver's license covers most motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers available on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older and upload a valid driver's license through the RVezy platform, which handles ID verification securely during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is, you can often be booked and approved within a day.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Hotchkiss RV rental?
Every RV rental in Hotchkiss booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you're covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you can choose from different coverage levels during checkout to match your comfort zone. Coverage levels vary in deductible and inclusions, which provides meaningful peace of mind, especially on Colorado's mountain highways where the unexpected can happen. Pro tip: review the coverage options carefully at booking, the upgraded tier is often just a few dollars more per night and worth it for the lower deductible when exploring Black Canyon country.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Hotchkiss RV trip?
Booking an RV rental in Hotchkiss is low-risk because RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy that applies to every rental, not the individual host. There's a money-back grace period after booking, and additional protections may apply for circumstances like host cancellations, which matter in Colorado where wildfire smoke or early snow on Grand Mesa can occasionally disrupt plans. The full cancellation details are available on the RVezy Help Center and during the booking flow, so you'll know exactly where you stand before you confirm. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for peak Hotchkiss wine harvest season in September, since you have flexibility if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Hotchkiss RV rental?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Hotchkiss is easy to find. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who welcome dogs and other pets, and you can message them directly to share details about your furry co-pilot. Hotchkiss and the surrounding North Fork Valley are wonderfully dog-friendly, with off-leash trails on nearby BLM land at Jumbo Mountain in Paonia and dog-welcoming patios at local wineries. Just note that Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park restricts dogs on most trails and prohibits walking dogs around the South Rim Campground from early June to mid-August due to protective deer. Pro tip: pack a tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, evenings on the patio are the best part of the trip.
nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Hotchkiss?
Yes, RV delivery in Hotchkiss is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow the RV to your campsite at Crawford State Park, the South Rim Campground at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, or even a private property, level it, hook it up, and walk you through how everything works. Just filter for Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service and check their delivery radius and fee, which is usually based on distance from Hotchkiss. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're flying into Montrose Regional Airport (just 30 miles away) and want to skip the stress of driving a big rig through the mountains.
colorado.com/articles/best-rv-camping-coloradoHow does mileage work on a Hotchkiss RV rental?
Mileage on RVezy is set by each host, and many Hotchkiss listings include a generous daily allowance (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day) with reasonable per-mile fees after that. Some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a Hotchkiss RV trip if you're planning to circle the San Juan Skyway or chase Grand Mesa lakes. From Hotchkiss, you can reach Black Canyon of the Gunnison in about 45 minutes (35 miles), Grand Junction in 90 minutes (70 miles), Telluride in just over 2 hours (95 miles), and Moab, Utah in about 3 hours (155 miles). Pro tip: tell the host your rough itinerary upfront so they can recommend the right mileage package.
codot.gov/travelWhere are the best campgrounds near Hotchkiss for RV camping?
The North Fork Valley is packed with excellent options for RV camping in Hotchkiss. Mountain Valley Meadows RV Park sits right in town on Highway 133 with full hookups, mature trees, and 60-foot pull-throughs that fit any rig. The Campground at Big B's Delicious Orchards in Paonia lets you camp among working fruit trees with cider and live music on weekends. About 12 miles east, Clear Fork and Iron Creek Campgrounds at Crawford State Park offer reservable sites with electric hookups right on Crawford Reservoir. And for a bucket-list night, the South Rim Campground at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park has 20/30/50 amp electric in Loop B with some of the darkest skies in Colorado. Book South Rim through Recreation.gov up to six months ahead.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/CrawfordWhen is the best time to plan a Hotchkiss RV trip?
Hotchkiss enjoys a semi-arid, high-desert climate at 5,350 feet, which makes the prime RV season longer than most of Colorado. May and June bring 70 to 80 degree days, fruit blossoms across the orchards, and minimal rain, while September and early October are the local secret with warm days in the high 70s, cool nights, and the West Elk wine harvest in full swing. July highs can hit the low 90s but evenings cool dramatically (often a 35 to 40 degree swing) thanks to the high-desert air. Winters are cold (highs near 30, lows near 10) but the valley sees less snow than the surrounding mountains. Pro tip: time your trip with Paonia Cherry Days in early July or the Mountain Harvest Festival in late September for an unforgettable RV trip from Hotchkiss.
weather.gov/gjt/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Hotchkiss?
You'll be more than okay, Hotchkiss is one of the easiest places in Colorado to try your first RV rental. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation and walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, water system, propane, generator, and dump valves, so you're never left guessing. Hotchkiss itself sits in a wide, flat valley along Highway 92 with gentle terrain, light traffic, and easy access to grocery, fuel, and propane in town. If city driving worries you, just choose a Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Hotchkiss instead of a 35-foot Class A. Pro tip: ask your host to recommend a first-night campsite within 20 miles, like Crawford State Park, so you can settle in before the bigger adventures.
codot.gov/safetyWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire, dead battery, or lockout on Highway 50 is just a phone call away. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for quick troubleshooting on quirks specific to their RV, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after every trip. Cell service can be spotty in the canyons near Black Canyon of the Gunnison and on Grand Mesa, so save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Hotchkiss. Pro tip: do a quick tire pressure and fluid check before any climb over McClure Pass (8,755 feet) on Highway 133, it's the most common Hotchkiss day trip and the steepest grade nearby.
codot.gov/travel/colorado-road-conditionsWhat are the best road trip routes from Hotchkiss?
An RV road trip from Hotchkiss puts some of Colorado's most legendary drives within easy reach. The West Elk Loop Scenic Byway is a 205-mile circuit that starts in town and winds past Paonia State Park, Kebler Pass aspens (one of the largest aspen groves in North America), and Crested Butte before looping back. Drive 45 minutes south to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, 2 hours to Telluride via the San Juan Skyway, or 3 hours west to Moab, Utah and Arches National Park. Crossing into Utah is welcome on RVezy rentals, but travel into Mexico is not permitted due to insurance. Pro tip: do the West Elk Loop counterclockwise so you descend Kebler Pass with gravity on your side.
codot.gov/travel/scenic-byways/northwest/west-elk-loopHow should I budget for fuel on a Hotchkiss RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than you might think for a Colorado RV rental in this region. Expect a Class C motorhome to average 8 to 10 MPG, a travel trailer setup around 10 to 12 MPG depending on the tow vehicle, and a campervan rental in Hotchkiss closer to 16 to 20 MPG. Gas in the North Fork Valley typically runs a bit higher than the national average, with stations in Hotchkiss, Paonia, and Delta offering the best prices, while remote stops near Crested Butte or McClure Pass can be noticeably higher. Pro tip: fill up in Delta (13 miles west) before any big mountain loop, and use the GasBuddy app along Highway 50 toward Montrose for the cheapest fuel on your way to Black Canyon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Hotchkiss?
For the most popular spots, book early, especially the South Rim Campground at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, which opens reservations on Recreation.gov six months in advance and fills within minutes for summer weekends. Crawford State Park's Iron Creek and Clear Fork Campgrounds are reservable through CPW Direct (Colorado Parks and Wildlife) and typically book up 2 to 3 months out for July and August. Private parks like Mountain Valley Meadows RV Park in Hotchkiss are more forgiving and usually have availability 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if you strike out at the South Rim, dispersed camping is free on the BLM land surrounding the park, your RVezy host can advise which rigs are suited for those roads.
cpw.state.co.us/buyapply/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat are driving conditions like around Hotchkiss?
Driving around Hotchkiss is refreshingly mellow compared to the I-70 mountain corridor. Highway 92 and Highway 133 are wide, well-maintained two-lane roads with gentle grades through the North Fork Valley. The biggest climb nearby is McClure Pass on Highway 133 toward Carbondale (8,755 feet) and Kebler Pass toward Crested Butte (10,007 feet), which is gravel and closed in winter, typically late October through May. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, occasional summer thunderstorms with brief downpours, and afternoon wind in the mesa country toward Delta. Pro tip: check CDOT's COtrip Planner before any pass crossing, and avoid Kebler Pass entirely if you're driving a Class A or towing a fifth wheel, it's narrow gravel with steep dropoffs.
codot.gov/travel/colorado-road-conditionsWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hotchkiss?
Campgrounds around Hotchkiss range from full-hookup luxury to wilderness solitude, so you can match the experience to your RV. Mountain Valley Meadows RV Park offers 30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, and a dump station right in Hotchkiss. Crawford State Park provides electric hookups, potable water, and a dump station, with a beach for swimming the reservoir. The South Rim Campground at Black Canyon has 20/30/50 amp electric in Loop B but no water hookups or dump station, so fill your fresh tank before arriving. For dumping and water on the road, the Delta Sanitation Station and most KOAs along Highway 50 are reliable stops. Pro tip: many North Fork Valley wineries on Harvest Hosts welcome self-contained RVs overnight for free with a tasting purchase.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/CrawfordWhat features come standard in a Hotchkiss RV rental?
Most RVs on RVezy in Hotchkiss come ready for adventure with sleeping for 4 to 8, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, propane furnace, and a dinette that converts to extra sleeping. Class C and larger motorhomes include seatbelted travel seats, while many newer rigs add solar panels, TVs, Bluetooth stereos, and outdoor speakers, perfect for evenings under the North Fork's famously dark skies. Generators are common in Class C and Class A motorhomes, which matters because the South Rim Campground at Black Canyon prohibits generator use. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and check photos carefully so you know whether the bathroom is a wet bath or dry bath, it's a big comfort difference on longer trips.
nps.gov/blca/planyourvisit/camp_southrim.htmWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hotchkiss hosts on RVezy offer popular add-ons that make your trip easier: camp chairs and outdoor mats (often free), bedding and kitchen kits ($25 to $75 per trip), generators or extra propane, bike racks, and even stocked starter pantries. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Hotchkiss, but RV delivery in Hotchkiss is widely available to local campgrounds, vacation rentals, or even festival grounds, with fees usually based on round-trip mileage. Mileage policies vary by host (often 100 to 150 free miles per day), so check the listing details and message the host about your itinerary. Pro tip: ask about delivery and setup at your first campsite, it removes the stress of backing in and leveling for first-time renters.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hotchkiss%2C%20ColoradoHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure, you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, and your funds are protected until your trip begins. A separate refundable security deposit is also held during your rental period to cover any incidental damage or extra cleaning, with the amount set by the host and clearly shown before you confirm. Assuming the RV is returned in the same condition you picked it up, the deposit is released back to you shortly after your trip ends. To avoid any hiccups on your RV rental in Colorado, take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, dump the tanks before returning, and refuel to the level shown on the pickup checklist. Pro tip: message the host with any concerns before booking, clear communication upfront prevents most deposit issues.
