Campgrounds and RV parks near Mount Crested Butte, CO

Summer visitors ride lift-served trails at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, hike the wildflower routes around Gothic and Schofield Pass, and drive the Kebler Pass road for aspen groves in late September. The Slate, East, and Taylor rivers draw fly anglers, and Taylor Reservoir adds flatwater paddling and lake fishing. Mountain biking is a defining local activity, with singletrack on Snodgrass, the 401, and the Doctor Park descent out of Taylor Canyon. Families often combine a ride day with a rafting trip out of Almont, where Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting runs guided floats on the Taylor and Gunnison. Campfire Ranch on the Taylor and Harmel's Ranch Resort also put anglers directly on the water. In winter, the resort shifts to alpine skiing, Nordic trails around the town of Crested Butte, and snowmobiling on groomed forest roads.

The RV camping season around Mount Crested Butte is short. Most public campgrounds and mountain passes open once snow clears, typically late May, and close by mid-October. Upper-valley Forest Service sites such as Lake Irwin often do not open until mid-June and generally close by early October. The town of Mt. Crested Butte also runs a free walk-in tent campground at Gothic Road and Winterset near town hall, open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Private RV parks such as Crested Butte RV Resort and Tall Texan RV Park and Cabins operate on similar warm-season windows. July and August are peak. Around 208 designated valley sites fill Friday through Sunday at the height of summer, and the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival in mid-July and the week of the Fourth of July are the tightest booking windows. September brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and aspen color, but early snow can arrive by month's end. Winter closes most campgrounds. Several mountain passes close over the winter, and RV access is limited to the plowed corridor along Highway 135 between Gunnison and Crested Butte.

Elevation is the first adjustment. Sites in the area sit between roughly 8,000 and 10,400 feet, so appliances and generators run less efficiently, and travelers should hydrate and pace themselves the first day. Nights drop into the 30s and 40s Fahrenheit even in July, and propane furnaces get regular use. Developed Forest Service campgrounds have vault toilets but limited services. Lake Irwin, for example, has no potable water, so campers must bring their own. Full hookups, showers, and dump stations are found at the private parks along the Taylor River and near Gunnison. Bears and moose are active in the drainages around town, so store food and other attractants in a hard-sided vehicle or bear-proof container. Dispersed camping close to Crested Butte is no longer permitted in the seven drainages closest to town, including Slate River, Washington Gulch, Brush Creek, Cement Creek, Gothic, Kebler Pass, and Lake Irwin; camping there is allowed only in numbered designated sites or established campgrounds.
