Campgrounds and RV parks near Norwood, CO

Norwood sits atop Wright's Mesa in southwestern Colorado at roughly 7,000 feet elevation, along Highway 145 between Telluride and the Utah border. The town lies near the San Miguel River and has a dry, high-desert climate that produces many clear days and nights. It works well as a quieter, lower-cost base for RV travelers heading to Telluride, the Uncompahgre National Forest, and the Dolores River country. Camping in the area splits into two distinct categories. Public-land options include primitive sites within the Dan Noble State Wildlife Area at Miramonte Reservoir south of town, along with dispersed sites on surrounding BLM and Forest Service land. For full hookups and family amenities, RV travelers typically head south on Highway 145 to Stoner RV Resort in the Dolores River corridor, or drop down to Montrose on US-550, where Riverbend RV Park and Cabins, The Secret Creek Village, and Meadows of San Juan Resort all operate. Norwood was designated an International Dark Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association in 2019, and was the first such community on Colorado's Western Slope, making it a strong base for stargazers.

Private RV parks in the region take direct reservations through their own websites or through third-party booking platforms. Riverbend RV Park and Cabins, The Secret Creek Village, Meadows of San Juan Resort, and Stoner RV Resort all operate on this model, with full hookups and various site types. Stoner RV Resort is seasonal, roughly May through mid-October, while the Montrose-area parks run year-round. Summer weekends around Telluride festivals and holiday periods fill first, so booking several weeks ahead is prudent. Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages the Dan Noble State Wildlife Area, which is open year-round and where camping is limited to designated sites on a first-come, first-served basis. A valid Colorado hunting license, fishing license, or SWA pass is required for everyone 16 or older accessing the state wildlife area.
