Campgrounds near Olathe, Colorado
Olathe sits in the Uncompahgre Valley of western Colorado, roughly 10 miles north of Montrose and about 25 miles west of the South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The town is best known for its sweet corn and its position between two major public-land destinations: Black Canyon to the east and the BLM-managed Gunnison Gorge Wilderness to the north. That location makes it a practical, quieter RV base for trips into the national park, Curecanti National Recreation Area, Ridgway State Park, and the San Juan Mountains.
RV travelers have a mix of private full-hookup parks and public campgrounds within a short drive. Uncompahgre River RV Park sits in Olathe itself with riverside sites, while Valley Sunset RV Ranch LLC is another local option along the valley. The Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA Journey provides a full-service option closer to the park entrance, and The Secret Creek Village and Flat Top OHV Area cover more rustic and off-road-oriented stays.
Elevation in the valley runs near 5,300 feet, with cooler nights than lower desert areas and easy paved access via US-50.
Things to do near Olathe
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is the headline trip. The South Rim Drive strings together overlooks like Gunnison Point, Chasm View, and Painted Wall, with short rim walks and longer trails such as Oak Flat Loop. The park is an International Dark Sky Park, so stargazing from a rim overlook or from camp is a highlight.
Within an hour of Olathe, RV travelers can fish the Gunnison River, boat and paddle Blue Mesa Reservoir in Curecanti National Recreation Area, or drive south to Ridgway and Ouray for hot springs and San Juan Mountain scenery. The Uncompahgre Plateau to the west offers OHV routes, and Flat Top OHV Area is a nearby option for motorized recreation.

When to visit Olathe
- spring
March - May
57° / 36°F 20 mmWarming valley days; rim nights still freeze.
- summer
June - August
82° / 54°F 25 mmPeak season; South Rim sites book months out.

61° / 36°F 22 mmCool clear days; cottonwood color along the rivers.
- winter
December - February
36° / 19°F 15 mmCold and snowy; South Rim loops first-come only.
Peak RV season runs from late May through September, when valley days are warm and dry and the high country is fully accessible. The South Rim Campground at Black Canyon sits around 8,000 feet, so summer evenings stay cool even when Olathe is hot. Summer weekends and holidays fill fast at both private parks and the national park, so reserve well ahead.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with cooler nights, fewer crowds, and good conditions for hiking and fishing. Fall brings cottonwood color along the Uncompahgre and Gunnison rivers and is often the driest, most stable window for canyon-rim visits.
Winter is quiet in the valley. Due to South Rim Fire wildfire damage, there is no set date to reopen Loops B and C at the South Rim Campground, which limits electric-hookup availability at the national park. South Rim operations shift to first-come, first-served in the winter months from roughly October through April, and drinking water is only available mid-May through mid-October. Private parks in Olathe and Montrose remain the more comfortable cold-weather base.
How to book campgrounds near Olathe
Private RV parks around Olathe, including Uncompahgre River RV Park, Valley Sunset RV Ranch LLC, and the Montrose / Black Canyon Nat'l Park KOA Journey, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. For summer weekends, book several weeks to a few months out. Larger rigs should confirm site length, pull-through availability, and 50-amp service when reserving.
National park sites use the federal system. South Rim Campground accepts reservations on a six-month rolling window on Recreation.gov and often fills quickly for summer weekends. Black Canyon is a cashless park, and first-come sites at East Portal and North Rim require payment through the Recreation.gov Scan and Pay mobile app on arrival, so download the app before entering the park.
What to expect
Olathe is a small farming town, not a resort hub. Expect a quieter, agricultural setting with easy access to grocery, fuel, and dump stations in Montrose. Private parks in the area lean practical: level sites, full or partial hookups, laundry, and river frontage rather than pools and activity programs.
Inside the national park, amenities are limited on purpose. There are no water hookups or dump station at South Rim Campground, and cell phone reception is unreliable in the area. The rim sits at high elevation around 8,000 feet, bears frequent the area so all food must be kept in approved containers, and weather varies greatly from the canyon rim to the canyon floor.
Plan for cool nights year-round at elevation, sun protection during the day, and a full water tank before heading to any park campground.

cpw.state.co.us/ridgway-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Olathe?
Late May through early October is prime time for your Olathe RV trip, with July and August averaging highs in the low 80s°F and cool nights around 55°F, ideal for mountain camping. June brings wildflowers in the San Juans, September delivers golden aspens and thinner crowds, and the first week of August hosts the famous Olathe Sweet Corn Festival. Winters are cold (January lows around 16°F with snow on mountain passes), so most area campgrounds operate roughly April 15 to October 15. Local insider tip: target the shoulder weeks just after Labor Day, the weather is still gorgeous, campgrounds open up, and rental prices drop noticeably.

Cross-border trips to other US states are allowed on RVezy. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. For a 5-day, 500-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $200 to $300 in fuel.
