Camping near Orchard Mesa, Colorado
Orchard Mesa sits on the south bank of the Colorado River across from Grand Junction, on Colorado's Western Slope. The neighborhood is a practical base for RV travelers heading to Colorado National Monument, a park of towering monoliths and deep canyons suited to hiking, scenic drives, and photography, or east to Palisade wine country and Grand Mesa National Forest.
Most RV parks in the area are clustered along the I-70 and US-50 corridors within a short drive of Orchard Mesa. Grand Junction KOA Holiday, Camp Eddy, Mobile City RV Park, Canyon View RV Resort, and RV Ranch at Grand Junction all serve as full-service basecamps, with the national monument, the Bookcliffs, and the Grand Mesa reachable as day trips.
The surrounding valley is high desert at roughly 4,600 feet, so expect dry air, strong sun, and cool nights even in summer. Grand Junction Regional Airport is the closest commercial airport, and Palisade, Fruita, and downtown Grand Junction all sit within about fifteen minutes of Orchard Mesa.
Things to do near Orchard Mesa
The headline attraction is Colorado National Monument, entered from Fruita on the west or Grand Junction on the east and traversed by Rim Rock Drive. Trails range from short overlooks like Canyon Rim and Window Rock to full-day canyon descents. Fruita is a haven for mountain bikers with trails like the Kokopelli, and the 18 Road trails north of town add miles of desert singletrack.
Palisade, ten minutes east of Orchard Mesa, anchors the Fruit and Wine Byway with wineries, cideries, orchards, and peach stands that peak in late summer. The Colorado River is accessible for float trips and fishing at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park.
For higher, cooler terrain, Grand Mesa National Forest rises east of town with hundreds of lakes for fishing, hiking, and, in winter, snowshoeing and Nordic skiing.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel. From April through May and again from mid-September through October, daytime highs in the valley are comfortable, nights are cool, and the desert parks are at their most pleasant for hiking. Wildflowers appear on the monument in April and May, and cottonwoods along the Colorado River turn gold in October.
Summer is hot and dry in the valley, with daytime highs routinely in the 90s Fahrenheit and afternoon thunderstorms possible in July and August. Many travelers pair a valley basecamp with day trips up to Grand Mesa, where elevations near 10,000 feet keep temperatures much cooler. Peach harvest in Palisade runs from mid-July into September and drives strong weekend demand at nearby campgrounds.
Winter brings cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced services. Saddlehorn Campground's B Loop inside Colorado National Monument stays open year-round, while many private RV parks operate on shortened schedules.

This camper was awesome just what we were looking for . The space was nice for only three people but a good amount of room to visit with friends and get out of the rain. The best part was Jessica delivered the camper exactly where we wanted. Jessica and Mike are very nice people to work with and will use them again if they will have us. Thank you.
LaDonna L. - Jul 2026
Excellent RV hosts. Provided excellent communication and also explained the operating of the RV in detail. Would definitely use them again. Thanks Mike!

How to book campgrounds near Orchard Mesa
Private RV parks in the Grand Junction area, including Grand Junction KOA Holiday, Canyon View RV Resort, Mobile City RV Park, Camp Eddy, and RV Ranch at Grand Junction, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and the Palisade peach and wine harvest, book several weeks or months ahead.
Public campgrounds inside Colorado National Monument are reserved through Recreation.gov. Outer sites in Saddlehorn's A and B loops are reservable up to six months in advance during the mid-March through October season, with inner-loop sites released about two weeks ahead. Colorado state park sites at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park and Highline Lake State Park are booked through Colorado Parks and Wildlife's reservation system, which also requires a valid parks pass at check-in.
Grand Mesa National Forest campgrounds are seasonal and use Recreation.gov, with some sites first-come, first-served.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of full-hookup RV resorts close to Orchard Mesa and more basic public campgrounds inside parks and forests. Valley sites tend to be level, graveled, and pull-through friendly, with laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi at the larger private parks. Freeway noise is a real factor at some properties near I-70, so check site placement when booking.
Inside Colorado National Monument, Saddlehorn provides 79 sites across three loops with picnic tables, charcoal grills, flush toilets, and potable water available in the warm months. There are no showers or hookups, and wood fires are not permitted. Cell service can be spotty on Rim Rock Drive.
Bring sun protection, layered clothing for large day-to-night temperature swings, and plenty of drinking water. Wildlife encounters can include mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, and rattlesnakes.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Orchard Mesa, CO
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Orchard Mesa, CO?
Good news, an RV rental in Orchard Mesa is one of the more affordable ways to explore Colorado's Western Slope. Nightly rates typically start around $130 to $160 for travel trailers and pop-ups, while Class C motorhomes generally run $200 to $300 per night, and larger Class A coaches climb higher in peak summer. To score a cheap RV rental in Orchard Mesa, target shoulder season weeks in April, early May, or late September when wine harvest crowds thin out. Pro tip: book mid-week pickups, filter for Instant Book, and watch for hosts offering weekly discounts on stays of five nights or more. Booking 8 to 12 weeks before peach season fills your calendar with the best inventory at the best prices.
visitgrandjunction.com/places-to-stay/rv-parksrentals-campgrounds/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Orchard Mesa?
Great news, a regular Colorado or out-of-state driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Orchard Mesa. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or RV-specific endorsement is required for any motorhome or trailer you'll find on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, fifth wheels, and campervans. You'll just need to be 25 or older and pass a quick identity verification through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club. With Colorado National Monument's Rim Rock Drive only 15 minutes away, you'll be on those red-rock switchbacks the same afternoon you pick up the keys.
dmv.colorado.gov/drivers-licenseIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Orchard Mesa booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the canyons with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (this is set by RVezy, not the host). If you blow a tire on Highway 50, lock yourself out at Highline Lake, or need a tow off Rim Rock Drive, one call to RVezy roadside assistance gets help dispatched. Pick the coverage tier that fits your trip and click Book with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Orchard Mesa RV rental?
Life happens, and RVezy has you covered with a clear cancellation policy that applies to every booking. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the policy, which includes tiered refunds based on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. Severe weather, wildfire smoke, or unexpected road closures on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon may also be considered when major disruptions happen. Full details are available in the RVezy Help Center, so you can review terms before confirming. Bottom line: booking your Orchard Mesa RV trip is low-risk, so go ahead and lock in those summer Palisade wine-country dates with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on my Orchard Mesa RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Orchard Mesa is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see motorhomes and trailers where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcomed by the host. Some owners charge a small cleaning fee or refundable pet deposit, which is shown upfront in the listing. Once you arrive, your pup has tons of room to roam: the Riverfront Trail along the Colorado River, the off-leash area at Canyon View Park, and the dog-friendly tasting patios in nearby Palisade. Heads up, pets are allowed in Saddlehorn Campground inside Colorado National Monument on leash, but not on the park's hiking trails (only paved paths).
nps.gov/colm/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Orchard Mesa?
Yes, RV delivery in Orchard Mesa is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip towing a 30-foot trailer down North River Road. Many local hosts will drop the RV at your campsite, set up the leveling jacks, connect the hookups, walk you through the systems, and pick it up at the end. Popular delivery destinations include Palisade Basecamp RV Resort, James M. Robb Colorado River State Park (Fruita Section), Grand Junction KOA Holiday, and even private vineyard stays through Harvest Hosts. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so searching hosts based in Grand Junction, Fruitvale, or Clifton can help with the best rates. Message your host to confirm the exact drop spot before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Orchard%20Mesa%2C%20ColoradoHow far can I drive my rental RV from Orchard Mesa?

From your pickup, Moab, Utah and Arches National Park sit just 110 miles west on I-70, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is about 75 miles south, Telluride is roughly 125 miles via Highway 50 and 550, Glenwood Springs is 90 miles east, and Mesa Verde National Park is around 200 miles southwest. Any extra miles are billed at a per-mile rate shown clearly on the listing. Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop, filter listings by unlimited mileage to keep your fuel-and-miles budget simple.
codot.gov/travelWhere can I park or camp my RV near Orchard Mesa?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Orchard Mesa. Top picks within 15 miles include: Saddlehorn Campground inside Colorado National Monument (79 sites, no hookups, jaw-dropping red rock views), Grand Junction KOA Holiday (full hookups, pool, year-round), Junction West RV Park (76 full-hookup pull-throughs), Monument RV Resort in Fruita (44 sites, pool, near Monument's west entrance), and Palisade Basecamp RV Resort (riverside sites among the peach orchards, one mile from downtown Palisade). For free dispersed camping, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands at North Fruita Desert and 18 Road have legendary mountain-bike access. Pro tip: Saddlehorn fills fast in spring, so reserve through Recreation.gov as soon as your dates open.
nps.gov/colm/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Orchard Mesa?
Orchard Mesa enjoys a high-desert climate with a long RV season that stretches well beyond the usual summer window. April and May bring 65 to 78°F highs and wildflowers along Rim Rock Drive (an ideal sweet spot). June through August is peak season, with highs of 88 to 95°F and the chance of afternoon thunderstorms, plus Country Jam in June. September and October are arguably the best of all, with crisp 70°F days, Palisade peach and wine harvest festivals, and golden cottonwoods along the Colorado River. Winters are mild for Colorado (highs in the 40s) with very little snow in the valley, so a winter Orchard Mesa RV trip is genuinely doable.
weather.gov/gjt/I am renting an RV for the first time, what should I expect?
First time renting an RV in Orchard Mesa? You will be in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup (or delivery), covering how to extend the slide-outs, fill the fresh water tank, dump the gray and black tanks, fire up the propane fridge, run the generator, and use the awning. Plan on 30 to 60 minutes for orientation, take photos and short videos as you go, and do not be shy with questions. Many local hosts know the Grand Valley RV community well and can recommend the easiest route to your first campground. With 24/7 roadside assistance included through the RVezy protection plan, you have a safety net if anything trips you up on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if something breaks down during my RV trip?
Don't sweat it: every booking from Orchard Mesa includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package. If you get a flat on the I-70 stretch through De Beque Canyon, run out of fuel near Gateway, or have a mechanical issue at the top of Grand Mesa, one phone call dispatches help. For non-emergency stuff like a stuck slide-out or a quirky fridge, message your host directly through the RVezy app (they often know their RV's quirks better than any mechanic). And RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number to your phone before pulling out of the driveway and you're set.
codot.gov/travel/colorado-511Can I take my Orchard Mesa RV rental into Utah or other states?
Yes, an RV road trip from Orchard Mesa into neighboring states is one of the most popular reasons people rent here. Most hosts happily allow travel across Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Arizona, with Moab and Arches National Park just 110 miles away on I-70, Monument Valley about 270 miles south, and Yellowstone reachable in a long day. Always confirm out-of-state travel with your host before booking, since a few owners limit range. Important: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection package and insurance don't cover Mexico. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed case-by-case, so message the host first.
codot.gov/travelWhat's the fuel budget for an RV trip from Orchard Mesa?
Budgeting fuel for your RV trip from Orchard Mesa is easier than you'd think. Travel trailers towed by a half-ton pickup typically average 10 to 13 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and big Class A coaches run 6 to 9 mpg. Diesel pushers do a bit better. Gas prices in Grand Junction tend to track close to the Colorado state average, often a few cents below Denver. Fill up in town before heading into Colorado National Monument or up Grand Mesa, since there are no services inside the Monument and limited fuel on Highway 65. Pro tip: a quick stop at Costco off Highway 6 and 50 usually beats highway prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Orchard Mesa?
For summer and fall trips, book your campgrounds the same day you book your RV. Saddlehorn Campground inside Colorado National Monument opens reservations six months in advance through Recreation.gov, and outer-loop sites disappear quickly for weekends. Colorado State Park campgrounds like James M. Robb (Fruita and Island Acres sections) and Highline Lake also open six months out via CPW Shop. Private resorts like Palisade Basecamp and Grand Junction KOA fill 2 to 3 months ahead for peach harvest weekends in August and September. Pro tip: stack a couple of nights at Saddlehorn for the canyon experience, then move to a full-hookup park to dump tanks, do laundry, and recharge before your next leg.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234778What are driving conditions like around Orchard Mesa?
Driving an RV around Orchard Mesa is mostly relaxed valley driving on wide highways, but a few local tips will keep your trip smooth. I-70 and Highways 6 and 50 are well-maintained and easy in any rig. Rim Rock Drive through Colorado National Monument has three tunnels with a low clearance of 10 feet 6 inches near the curb (max 16 feet on centerline) and prohibits combined vehicle lengths over 40 feet. Highway 65 up Grand Mesa climbs to 10,800 feet with steep 7 percent grades, so downshift, take it slow, and watch for afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Winter occasionally brings ice to shaded canyons. Check CDOT's COtrip site or 511 before heading out.
codot.gov/travel/colorado-511What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Orchard Mesa?
Campgrounds near Orchard Mesa range from full-resort luxury to no-hookup national park sites, so you can match the experience to your rig. Private parks like Grand Junction KOA Holiday, Junction West RV Park, and Palisade Basecamp offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, laundry, hot showers, and pools. State park campgrounds at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park have electric hookups, water, and dump stations. Saddlehorn Campground inside Colorado National Monument has flush toilets and seasonal water but no hookups, no dump, and no showers. The nearest dump station to the Monument is at the Colorado Welcome Center in Fruita. Plan a mid-trip stop at a full-hookup park to dump, refill, and recharge.
nps.gov/colm/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhat is included inside the RV when I rent in Orchard Mesa?
You will find most Orchard Mesa rentals essentially move-in ready. Standard equipment typically includes a queen or king bed, additional convertible sleeping for kids or guests, a kitchen with fridge, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts add bedding, towels, outdoor chairs, a propane BBQ, leveling blocks, and even bikes. Generators, Wi-Fi hotspots, and solar are common on campervans and Class B rigs, perfect for boondocking out on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land near 18 Road. Each listing has a clear checklist of what is included plus optional add-ons, so you will know exactly what to pack (and what to leave at home).
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Orchard%20Mesa%2C%20ColoradoWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Customizing your motorhome rental in Orchard Mesa is part of the fun. Common add-ons (each priced clearly on the listing) include linen and towel kits, kitchen packages, generators, propane refills, portable BBQs, camp chairs, bike racks, and pet kits. Most rentals are round-trip, returning to the same pickup location, with typical pickup windows from 12 to 3 pm and drop-off in the morning. Many hosts in Grand Junction and Clifton offer Walker Field/Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) pickup or delivery to your driveway in Orchard Mesa. Mileage policies are listed upfront, with extra miles billed at a set per-mile rate. Pro tip: message the host before booking if you want a one-way trip to Denver or Moab, some are open to it.
gjairport.com/How do payment and the security deposit work?
Paying for your RV rental in Orchard Mesa is straightforward and secure through the RVezy platform. You will pay with a credit or debit card at booking, and your booking payment is processed through RVezy. A separate refundable security deposit is also placed on hold (amount varies by RV) to cover any potential damage or excess cleaning. Assuming the RV comes back in the condition you received it, the hold is released after the trip. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do a thorough walk-around with your host at pickup and drop-off, take time-stamped photos, dump tanks before return, and refill the gas tank to the level shown at pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Orchard Mesa during winter?
Yes, winter RV trips from Orchard Mesa are a hidden gem. The Grand Valley sits at just 4,600 feet with mild winters (40s during the day, lows in the 20s) and very little snow, so you can keep your rig in the valley and day-trip up to Powderhorn Mountain Resort on Grand Mesa or to Skyway for fat-biking and snowshoeing. Look for listings labeled four-season or winterized, with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, propane furnace, and shore-power capability. Book a full-hookup park like Junction West or Grand Junction KOA Holiday that stays open year-round, and you'll have heated bathhouses and protected water hookups. It's the smartest way to enjoy a quiet, low-cost campervan rental in Orchard Mesa.
