Campgrounds and RV parks near Daniel, UT

Deer Creek Reservoir is the dominant draw. From April to November, visitors can catch rainbow trout, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass at Deer Creek Reservoir, and stream fishing happens both above and below the reservoir in the Provo River. The nearly 3,000-acre reservoir has predictable winds for excellent water sports and five species of sport fish. Boating, sailing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, and paddling are common summer plans. On land, Wasatch Mountain State Park offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback trails, and four 18-hole golf courses at the Wasatch Mountain and Soldier Hollow courses. Soldier Hollow was the Nordic skiing venue for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and now operates year-round for tubing, cross-country skiing, mountain biking and biathlon. Up Daniels Canyon, Daniels Creek is stocked with rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout, and Foreman Hollow Trail begins in the Lodgepole campground, offering easy to moderate hiking on a 4-mile loop with views of Strawberry Reservoir, Strawberry Peak and Twin Peaks.

The main state-park camping season runs late spring through mid-fall. All campgrounds at Deer Creek are available by reservation only from May 1 to October 15. Lodgepole in Daniels Canyon typically opens in May and closes at the end of October, tracking snowmelt at 7,800 feet. Summer is peak season. Days are warm and dry, reservoirs are busy on weekends, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in the higher canyons. Fall brings cooler nights, quieter campgrounds, and strong aspen color as leaves turn orange and gold, and visitors may catch glimpses of wild turkeys, moose and elk as they descend to lower elevations with winter approaching. Winter closes most state-park campground loops, though day-use fees remain in effect year round and the reservoir stays open for ice fishing when conditions allow. Wasatch Mountain State Park keeps its Soldier Hollow area running through winter for tubing, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing, and the Lakehouse at Deer Creek Island operates year round.

Expect a mix of full-hookup resort loops and simpler dry-camping options within a 20-minute drive of Daniel. At Wasatch Mountain State Park, the Mahogany loop is all full hookups on paved spurs, all campground loops have drinking water, flush toilets and hot showers, and each campsite has a table, fire ring and grill. Cell service in the Heber Valley is generally solid. At Deer Creek, Great Horned Owl Campground features 21 paved campsites that can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs up to 55 feet long but has no hookups, so plan water and power accordingly. Chokecherry offers a mix of 30- and 50-amp sites. A few park-specific rules matter for RVers. Deer Creek is a no-OHV park: no OHVs, ATVs, or dirt bikes are allowed. Watershed rules mean pets are restricted to the campground area at Deer Creek. Bring leveling blocks and layers for cool mountain nights.
