Campgrounds and RV parks near Parachute, CO

Water recreation drives most trips. Vega Reservoir sits at roughly 8,000 feet on the northeast edge of Grand Mesa and holds rainbow, cutthroat, brook, and brown trout, with boating, paddling, and shoreline fishing in summer and ice fishing once the lake freezes. Rifle Gap Reservoir, about 40 minutes east, is set up for boating, waterskiing, swimming, fishing, and windsurfing, with a swim beach in the park. On land, the area connects to hundreds of miles of BLM roads and Grand Mesa National Forest trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, OHV use, and, in winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Rifle Falls State Park and its triple waterfall sits just north of Rifle Gap for a short side trip. Guests at Grand Mesa RV Park have direct access up Highway 65 into the national forest's alpine lakes and jeep trails.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the reservoirs are open for boating and the high country is snow-free. Vega State Park sees its heaviest use during this window, and Early Settlers Campground fills quickly. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends at both Vega and Rifle Gap. Shoulder months are useful. May and September usually deliver good weather with smaller crowds, and spring and fall bring the most migratory birds to the reservoirs. Fall foliage on Grand Mesa's aspens typically peaks in late September to early October. Winter changes the picture at higher elevations. Vega closes its campsites for the winter, though its five rustic cabins stay open year-round and give direct access for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing on Grand Mesa. Rifle Gap stays open for camping year-round, though the Lakeview loop closes in winter. Water spigots at Vega's Oak Point and Aspen Grove campgrounds are shut off around October 31, and hookups and showers at Early Settlers close around November 15, pending weather.

Elevations vary widely on a single trip. Parachute sits near 5,500 feet, Rifle Gap around 6,000 feet, and Vega State Park at roughly 8,000 feet. Plan for cooler nights and thinner air at Vega and on Grand Mesa, and expect afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. Hookups differ by campground. Private parks around Parachute offer full hookups and big-rig pull-throughs. At Rifle Gap, only the Lakeview loop has full hookups, Cottonwood has electric and water, Cedar has electric only, and Pinon and Sage are basic sites. Vega has electric and water hookups only at Early Settlers, with walk-in tent sites, standard sites, and cabins across the other loops. Dump stations are available at both state parks. Bring a leash for pets, and pick up groceries in Rifle or Parachute before heading to Vega, which is a long drive from the nearest full-service town and has no cell service.
