Ridgway RV camping overview
Ridgway sits in the Uncompahgre River valley of southwestern Colorado, at roughly 7,000 feet elevation between the Cimarron and San Juan ranges. The town works as a practical RV base for the San Juan Skyway, Ouray, Telluride, and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, with paved highway access via US 550 and Colorado 62.
Most developed RV camping in the immediate area is anchored by Ridgway State Park on the reservoir just north of town, which operates campgrounds with hookups including Dakota Terraces and Pa-Co-Chu-Puk. South of town toward Ouray, the Ouray KOA Holiday offers full-service private sites, and Orvis Hot Springs (Nudist) provides clothing-optional camping alongside natural hot spring pools.
Basecamp 550 adds a smaller privately run option along the US 550 corridor. Together these sites cover the range from state-park hookup loops to niche private grounds, all within a short drive of Ridgway's grocery, fuel, and dump-station services.
Things to do near Ridgway
Ridgway State Park is the local hub for water recreation, with a swim beach, boat ramps, and trout fishing on both the reservoir and the tailwater section of the Uncompahgre River below the dam. Trails at Pa-Co-Chu-Puk connect to the river, and the park's paved path links toward town.
Day trips from an RV base here reach the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton, the Ouray Ice Park and via ferrata, Telluride's gondola, and the Owl Creek Pass and Last Dollar Road scenic drives. Hot-spring soaking is a signature stop, either at Orvis Hot Springs south of town or at the municipal facilities in Ouray. Anglers can also access Gold Medal water on the Gunnison in Cimarron.

Ridgway's high-desert mountain climate produces four sharply different camping seasons. Late May through September is the primary window, with reliable overnight temperatures, open high-country passes, and full services at Ridgway State Park. July and August bring afternoon monsoon thunderstorms, so hikes on exposed ridges should start early.
Spring is cold and wet at elevation, with snow still possible through May and mud season affecting dirt roads into the San Juans. Wildflowers peak in July at higher elevations. Fall aspen color typically runs from late September into the first week of October, and demand for sites spikes during that window.
Winter camping is limited. Ridgway State Park keeps select sites in the Elk Ridge and Dakota Terraces loops open year-round with plowed access, heated restrooms, and a year-round dump station, but many private grounds close or shift to limited service. High-elevation roads such as the top of Owl Creek Pass and much of the Alpine Loop close with snow from roughly November through May.
How to book campgrounds near Ridgway
Both Ridgway State Park campgrounds, Dakota Terraces and Pa-Co-Chu-Puk, are reserved through Colorado Parks and Wildlife's central reservation system at cpwshop.com or by phone. Sites become available on a rolling window up to six months in advance, and summer weekends, holidays, and the fall color window commonly fill the moment they open. A daily park pass or annual state parks pass is required in addition to the site fee.
Ouray KOA Holiday is booked through the KOA website or app. Orvis Hot Springs and Basecamp 550 are private operations and take direct reservations through their own websites, usually with a deposit and a minimum stay on peak weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Ridgway State Park's Dakota Terraces loops offer 30-amp electric sites with shared water, an RV dump station, flush restrooms, and hot showers, and sit near the reservoir and marina. Pa-Co-Chu-Puk lies along the Uncompahgre River below the dam and adds 50-amp full-hookup sites plus walk-in tent sites.
Private options vary. Ouray KOA Holiday provides full hookups and typical KOA amenities. Orvis Hot Springs allows RVs in a smaller lot with limited hookups and includes soaking access for registered guests. Cell coverage is generally good in the valley and along US 550, and drops quickly in the surrounding canyons and passes. Elevation affects propane appliances and engine performance, and overnight temperatures can be cold even in midsummer.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ridgway, CO
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ridgway, CO?
An RV rental in Ridgway is one of the most affordable ways to experience the San Juan Mountains. On RVezy, travel trailers typically range from about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400, depending on age and amenities. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can score a cheap RV rental in Ridgway by booking midweek, traveling in May or late September, or filtering by smaller campervans. Pro tip: many Ridgway hosts offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, so a 6 or 7 night stay often costs less per night than a quick weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ridgway%2C%20ColoradoDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Ridgway, Colorado?
Good news: Colorado does not require a special license for personal RV use, so your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ridgway. RVezy requires every approved driver to be 25 or older with a valid license, verified through the platform during booking. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) only applies to vehicles over 26,001 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which is well above almost every motorhome rental in Ridgway, CO. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward the paperwork really is.

Every RVezy booking in Ridgway comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the San Juan views instead of the what-ifs. At checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and it helps cover most damages to the RV during your rental. If you get a flat on the climb toward Owl Creek Pass or a battery dies at Ridgway State Park, one phone call dispatches help. It's not auto insurance, but it provides real financial protection and peace of mind, especially for a first time renting an RV in the mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my Ridgway plans change? Can I cancel my RV rental?
Yes, you can book with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you have room to finalize plans. After that, your refund depends on how far out you cancel. You'll see the full details before you confirm. Pro tip: if you're booking a Ridgway RV trip for peak July weekends or Telluride festival dates months ahead, lock in the dates early. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip if anything changes, and host cancellations are protected with a refund or travel credit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Ridgway?
Absolutely. Ridgway is one of the most dog-loving towns in Colorado, and plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Ridgway. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see eligible rigs instantly. Once you're here, dogs are welcome at Ridgway State Park campgrounds on a 6-foot leash, on the Uncompahgre Riverway Trail, and on dog-friendly patios in downtown Ridgway. Don't miss Rollans Park along the river, a local favorite for stretching paws after a drive. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and ask about hair-friendly bedding, most are happy to accommodate.
cpw.state.co.us/state-parks/ridgway-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Ridgway?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Ridgway right to your campsite at Ridgway State Park, a private property, or even a trailhead near Ouray. They'll level the RV, hook up water, electric, and sewer (where available), and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message them with your destination for an exact quote. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile round trip. Pro tip: campervan rental Ridgway customers headed to Pa-Co-Chu-Puk's full-hookup loop especially love this option, you arrive, the RV is set up, and the trip starts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ridgway%2C%20ColoradoWhat's the mileage policy and how far can I drive from Ridgway?
Most hosts include between 100 and 150 free miles per night, and you'll find a growing number of RV rental with unlimited mileage options on RVezy. That's plenty of range for the classic Ridgway road trip loop: Telluride is about 37 miles southwest via the scenic San Juan Skyway, Ouray sits 10 miles south, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is roughly 60 miles north, Mesa Verde National Park is about 130 miles southwest, and Great Sand Dunes National Park is roughly 215 miles east. Each listing shows its mileage policy and overage rate clearly. Pro tip: if you're planning the full San Juan Skyway loop (about 236 miles), filter for unlimited mileage upfront to save on extras.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ridgway%2C%20ColoradoWhere are the best campgrounds near Ridgway, CO?
You're spoiled for choice. The crown jewel is Ridgway State Park, just 4 miles north of town, with nearly 300 sites across three campgrounds: Dakota Terraces and Elk Ridge offer 30-amp electric hookups and a dump station, while Pa-Co-Chu-Puk has full-hookup sites along the Uncompahgre River. Ouray RV Park & Cabins (10 miles south) puts you walking distance to the Ouray Hot Springs, and KOA Montrose is another solid option about 27 miles north. Pro tip: Pa-Co-Chu-Puk's riverside loop fills up first, book the moment the 6-month reservation window opens through Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/Ridgway/Pages/Camping.aspxWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Ridgway?
Ridgway is a year-round destination, but the sweet spot for most travelers is late May through early October, when daytime highs sit between 70 and 85F and nights cool to the 40s and 50s, perfect for campfires. July and August bring the warmest weather along with afternoon monsoon thunderstorms, so plan hikes for mornings. Late September delivers golden aspens along the San Juan Skyway and smaller crowds. Winter is an adventure: temperatures often drop into the teens and 20s, but select loops at Ridgway State Park stay open with plowed sites, heated showers, and a year-round dump station, so winter RV camping Ridgway is genuinely doable.
weather.gov/gjt/I've never rented an RV before. Will I feel confident driving in Ridgway?
Yes, and Ridgway is a fantastic place for first-time renters. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering leveling, propane, the generator, water systems, and dump procedure, so you're never left guessing. For your first time renting an RV here, ask about a Class C motorhome or a campervan rental Ridgway hosts often recommend, they handle a lot like a large van. Stick to US-550 north toward Montrose or the gentle drive into Ridgway State Park while you get comfortable, then graduate to scenic routes. Pro tip: if mountain switchbacks make you nervous, skip the Million Dollar Highway south of Ouray on day one and ease into it later.
codot.gov/travelWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV on the road?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so if you blow a tire on the way to Telluride, run out of propane near Owl Creek Pass, or have a mechanical hiccup, help is one call away. Your host is also a great resource, they know the rig inside and out and are usually quick to text back with troubleshooting tips. The Ridgway area has reliable cell service on US-550 and in town, and the nearest full-service RV repair shops are in Montrose, about 27 miles north. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of your VIN and propane tank certification date at pickup, it speeds up any service call dramatically.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ridgway RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is normal, and a Ridgway RV trip pairs beautifully with neighboring states. From Ridgway you can easily reach Moab and Arches National Park in Utah (about 135 miles west), Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah border (about 175 miles), or northern New Mexico's Taos area (about 200 miles southeast). Cross-border trips into Canada require host approval and confirmation of insurance coverage, so message your host directly through the listing before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance doesn't extend across that border. Pro tip: Four Corners Monument is only about 165 miles from Ridgway and makes a fantastic two-day side trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV road trip from Ridgway?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's manageable with a little planning. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 14 mpg, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg. Gas prices in Ridgway and Montrose generally track close to the Colorado statewide average, with stations on US-550 in Ridgway and larger stations in Montrose offering RV-friendly pump access. For a 4-night, 300-mile RV road trip from Ridgway around the San Juan Skyway, budget roughly $150 to $300 in fuel depending on rig size. Pro tip: fill up in Montrose before heading deeper into the mountains, prices climb noticeably in Ouray and Telluride.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ridgway?
Earlier is better, but you have options. Reservations at Ridgway State Park open 6 months ahead through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and the riverside Pa-Co-Chu-Puk full-hookup sites for July and August weekends often book out the same day they release. For more flexibility, aim 3 to 4 months ahead for shoulder season (May, late September, October) or check for cancellations 1 to 2 weeks out, they pop up daily. Private parks near Ridgway and Ouray book through their own websites and tend to fill 2 to 3 months ahead in summer. Pro tip: pair an early-week State Park stay with a weekend at a private RV park to maximize availability.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/Ridgway/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat are driving conditions like around Ridgway?
Ridgway sits at about 6,985 feet in a wide valley, so the roads in and around town are gentle and easy. The drive between Ridgway and Montrose on US-550 is a flat, straightforward 27 miles. Things get more dramatic as you head south: the stretch from Ouray to Silverton (the Million Dollar Highway) features tight switchbacks, steep grades, and no guardrails in places, gorgeous but best tackled when you're confident in your rig. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms in July and August, and check CDOT's COtrip site for live road conditions in shoulder seasons. Pro tip: if you're driving a larger motorhome rental Ridgway hosts offer, consider Dallas Divide (CO-62) toward Telluride instead, it's wide, paved, and stunning.
cotrip.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Ridgway have for RVs?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Ridgway State Park's Pa-Co-Chu-Puk loop offers full hookups (water, sewer, electric), while Dakota Terraces and Elk Ridge offer electric with shared water spigots and a central dump station. All three campgrounds have flush restrooms, hot showers, and seasonal laundry, plus a year-round dump station. Looking for where to park an RV in Ridgway with full hookups beyond the state park? Private RV parks in Ridgway and nearby Ouray deliver. Pro tip: there's no on-site store inside Ridgway State Park, so stock groceries at City Market in Montrose or the Ridgway Mountain Market downtown before checking in.
cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/Ridgway/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat's typically included inside RV rentals in Ridgway?
Rentals come ready to go. A typical motorhome rental Ridgway listing on RVezy includes a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinette beds for kids, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most Class C and Class A rigs include a generator, and many hosts add a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor awning. WiFi varies, some hosts include a hotspot, others recommend Verizon or AT&T for the Ridgway area. Pro tip: family RV trip Ridgway bookings should confirm the seatbelt count matches your group size, and ask the host about an outdoor table for those San Juan sunsets.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ridgway%2C%20ColoradoWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Ridgway?
Hosts make it easy to customize. Common add-ons include kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bedding and linens ($25 to $75), camp chairs and tables ($15 to $30), generator hours, bike racks, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Ridgway, Ouray, or Montrose, or you can opt for RV delivery Ridgway hosts often offer straight to your campsite. Mileage policies vary from 100 free miles per night to unlimited, and generator hours typically range from 2 to 4 free per day. Each listing spells out fees clearly before you book. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a stocked kitchen kit, it often costs less than the time you'd spend hauling gear from home, especially if you're flying into Montrose Regional Airport.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ridgway%2C%20ColoradoHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy at the time of booking (no cash to the host), and the platform holds funds until your trip starts, so both sides are protected. A security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig, and released within a few days of return assuming no damages or policy violations. To avoid issues: do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup and dropoff, take date-stamped photos, return the RV with fuel and propane at the agreed level, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it. Pro tip: most disputes come from missed dump fees or pet hair, both easy to avoid with a quick clean before drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Ridgway in winter, and how do I stay warm?
Yes, winter rentals are possible and the San Juans in snow are magical. Filter for four-season RVs and message hosts to confirm heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a working furnace before booking. Ridgway State Park keeps select loops in Elk Ridge and Dakota Terraces open year-round with plowed sites, electric hookups, heated bathrooms, and a year-round dump station. Daytime winter highs sit in the 30s and 40s, nights regularly drop into the teens. Pro tip: keep a 30-amp shore power connection running the furnace overnight, and pair your Ridgway RV trip with ice climbing in Ouray's Ice Park or skiing at Telluride (about 45 minutes away), an unforgettable winter combo.
