Campgrounds and RV parks near Saguache, CO

Saguache sits at the northern end of the San Luis Valley in south-central Colorado, at about 7,700 feet elevation on US Highway 285. The town serves as a quiet base for RV travelers exploring the Rio Grande National Forest, the La Garita Wilderness, and the broader valley floor between the Sangre de Cristo range to the east and the San Juan Mountains to the west. Camping options within a short drive cover a range of styles. Saguache Creek Lodging and RV offers a highway-side base in town, while San Luis Valley Campground provides sites with access to nearby public lands. Russell Lakes State Wildlife Area, designated a National Natural Landmark and one of the largest high-elevation alkaline marshes in the country, allows limited overnight use in self-contained units in designated areas under Colorado Parks and Wildlife rules. Two hot-springs destinations round out the area: Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa on Highway 17, with RV sites, yurts, and tipis, and Valley View Hot Springs at the Orient Land Trust, a clothing-optional preserve reached by dirt road. Great Sand Dunes National Park lies roughly an hour southeast.

Private parks handle their own reservations. Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa books RV sites, yurts, tipis, and camping directly, with a 50 percent deposit due at the time of reservation and a 72-hour cancellation policy. San Luis Valley Campground and Saguache Creek Lodging and RV take reservations through their own operators. Colorado state park campsites open a six-month advance reservation window through cpwshop.com or 1-800-244-5613, and all state park sites are reservation only. Russell Lakes State Wildlife Area does not operate a traditional campground: overnight use is limited to self-contained units in designated parking areas, so most RV travelers should treat it as a day-use birding and fishing stop and camp elsewhere.
