Camping near Walsenburg, Colorado
Walsenburg sits at the intersection of Interstate 25 and U.S. Highway 160 in Huerfano County, roughly halfway between Pueblo and Trinidad in southern Colorado. It functions as the practical base for RV trips into the Spanish Peaks region and the Cuchara Valley, with easy fuel, grocery, and dump-station access before heading into the mountains.
Lathrop State Park, three miles west of town on Highway 160, is the main draw for RV travelers. Established in 1962 as Colorado's first state park, it covers roughly 1,451 acres around two reservoirs, Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake, with 103 campsites split between the Yucca and Piñon campgrounds. Yucca - Lathrop State Park offers basic non-electric sites; Piñon adds paved pads, up to 50-amp electric hookups, showers, and a dump station.
For travelers heading deeper into the mountains, La Veta sits about 16 miles southwest at 7,000 feet elevation along the Highway of Legends scenic byway. Circle The Wagons RV Resort, Sammie's Campground, and La Veta Pines RV Park cluster in and around town with full hookups within walking distance of restaurants and shops.
Things to do around Walsenburg
Water recreation centers on Lathrop State Park. Martin Lake permits power boating, water skiing, and sailing, while Horseshoe Lake is a wakeless zone suited to kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. Both lakes are stocked and popular for fishing, with catfish, bass, and trout among the common catches. A swim beach on Martin Lake typically opens for the summer season.
On land, the park offers hiking and biking trails around the lakes, horseback riding, an archery range, and the adjoining nine-hole Walsenburg Golf Course, the only state park golf course in Colorado. The Highway of Legends byway climbs south from Walsenburg through La Veta and over Cuchara Pass, passing volcanic dikes that radiate from the Spanish Peaks. In town, visitors can stop at the Walsenburg Mining Museum and the Museum of Friends.

Camping at Lathrop State Park is available year-round, but demand and weather vary sharply by season. Late spring through summer is peak, and the campgrounds fill regularly on summer weekends and holidays. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead is prudent for those dates, and reservations are recommended on any weekend from spring through fall.
Summer days are warm and mostly clear, with afternoon thunderstorms common in July and August. August is the wettest month, averaging about 69 mm of precipitation, and July sees the highest number of rainy days. Higher elevations in the Cuchara Valley and along the Highway of Legends run noticeably cooler than town, which is one reason La Veta Pines RV Park operates as a seasonal park, roughly May through October.
Fall brings cool nights, low humidity, and quieter campgrounds. Winter is cold, snowy, and windy, with January the coldest month, averaging a high near 32°F and a low near 15°F. Lathrop stays open in winter, but some mountain-town RV parks close, and Huerfano County periodically imposes fire restrictions during dry stretches.
How to book campgrounds near Walsenburg
Lathrop State Park uses the Colorado Parks and Wildlife reservation system. Sites can be booked online at cpwshop.com or by phone at 1-800-244-5613, up to six months in advance of the arrival date. A reservation is required to camp, and camping is only allowed in designated areas. Every vehicle also needs a valid state park pass in addition to the campsite fee.
Stay limits at Lathrop are 14 days within any 28-day period, with a maximum of six people, two motorized vehicles, and one camping unit per site. Check-in is 1 p.m. and check-out is noon. Private RV parks around La Veta, including Circle The Wagons RV Resort, Sammie's Campground, and La Veta Pines RV Park, are booked directly with each operator; call ahead in shoulder seasons since several close for the winter.
What to expect on the ground
Lathrop's Piñon Campground has paved pull-through and back-in sites, up to 50-amp electric hookups, fire pits, picnic tables, restrooms with pay showers, drinking water, and a dump station. Yucca - Lathrop State Park is basic, with a picnic table and fire pit at each site, no electric hookups, and vault or shared restrooms. Most sites are open with limited shade, and the park sits at roughly 6,400 feet elevation with wide views toward the Spanish Peaks.
Cell service in the area can be spotty, particularly in the mountains south of town. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., pets must stay on a six-foot leash, and nothing, including hammocks, can be tied to the trees. Wind can pick up quickly in any season, so anchor awnings well.
