Camping near Northwest Harwinton, Connecticut
Northwest Harwinton sits in Litchfield County, in Connecticut's Western Highlands. The area is rural and wooded, with rolling hills, trout streams, and easy reach to Bantam Lake, the Naugatuck River corridor, and Route 8. RV travelers use it as a base for hiking, paddling, and small-town exploration in Litchfield, Thomaston, and Torrington.
Campground options within a short drive include Branch Brook Campground in Thomaston, minutes from Route 8, and Black Rock State Park, which offers 78 campsites and four rustic cabins within walking distance of the beach, fishing pond, and hiking trails. On the Litchfield side of the region, White Memorial Foundation Family Campgrounds Windmill Hill and its companion area sit on the wooded property that surrounds Bantam Lake.
Gentile's Campground, in nearby Plymouth, rounds out the mix with a full-service private option. Together these campgrounds cover most RV needs, from full-hookup private parks to state-run wooded loops and rustic tent-oriented sites.
Things to do around Northwest Harwinton
Hiking is the headline activity. The blue-blazed Mattatuck Trail runs through Black Rock State Park and connects to the woodland sections of the Mattatuck State Forest, with side paths leading to ponds, mature forest, and open meadows. The White Memorial property adds roughly 35 miles of trail used for walking, running, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing, plus a mile-long boardwalk through the marsh around Little Pond.
Water activities are close at hand. Kayaking, canoeing, and fishing are popular on Bantam Lake and the Bantam River, and Black Rock Pond is one of Connecticut's 13 designated trout parks, regularly restocked throughout the spring and fall. Families also travel a short distance for small museums, antique railroad excursions, and amusement rides in the surrounding towns.

The camping window in this part of Connecticut is short. Black Rock State Park typically opens in late May and closes at noon on Columbus Day in October. Bathrooms are not available at that campground until Memorial Day, with portable toilets provided prior to Memorial Day.
At White Memorial, the two campgrounds run on different calendars: the season at Point Folly begins in early May and ends on Columbus Day, while Windmill Hill is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Private parks operate longer. Branch Brook Campground runs from early April through early November, and Gentile's Campground stays open year-round, which draws a notable population of full-time residents alongside seasonal campers.
Summer weekends fill quickly, and fall brings foliage traffic through Litchfield County. After Labor Day, campsites at Black Rock are available for advance reservations on Friday and Saturday nights and available to walk-ins Sunday through Thursday nights.

Marcie and her van were great! Marcie is a very low key host - she is very responsive and was so flexible about pick up and drop off times. Her solar batteries weren't working before our trip and she made sure they were replaced in time. Everything worked great and the van ran great. We spent a week in Acadia in the van. It was small enough that we were able to take it anywhere (including Cadillac Mountain, which doesn't allow anything over 21 feet) and park it with ease most places. We were worried about the sleeping arrangements but we ended up being super comfortable. We never used the propane, but the A/C worked great.

We had a great time on our trip in Marcie’s Solis. She was straightforward, kind, and easy to communicate with.

Easy pick up and drop off. Joe and Kim go over and above to make sure your experience with the vehicle is a positive one.

We were very pleased with our rental from Joe and Kim. The response when we had a question was instant. The unit was clean and the functionality for a 2005 unit was surprisingly good. Would definitely rent from them again.

How to book campgrounds near Northwest Harwinton
For state park sites, use the Connecticut State Parks reservation system. Black Rock State Park bookings run through Reserve America online or by phone at 1-877-668-CAMP (2267). The maximum length of stay is fourteen consecutive days, and after a 14-day reservation all members of the party and equipment must vacate the park for five days before reserving again.
At White Memorial, booking is direct through the conservation center's online system. Reservations for stays of seven days (six nights) and more open online starting January 15, and weekend reservations open February 15. Once the Campground Store opens the first weekend in May, reservations are accepted in person or online. Private parks including Branch Brook and Gentile's take reservations directly through their websites or by phone; contact them for site type and rig-length availability.
What to expect on the ground
Rig size matters. Windmill Hill allows no vehicles larger than a standard van or pickup and is restricted to tent camping. Point Folly permits tents, vans, pickup campers, pop-ups, and travel trailers, but no longer accommodates motorhomes or fifth-wheel trailers as of the 2026 season. At Gentile's, sites are mostly level, but internal roads run narrow and steep in places, which can make navigation difficult for larger trailers and fifth wheels.
Hookups vary widely. Private parks in the area generally offer full hookups, while state park sites are rustic with a dumping station on-site. Bringing firewood into Connecticut state parks from other states is strictly prohibited; firewood can be purchased locally. Black bears, deer, skunks, and raccoons share the space, so food, hygiene items, and trash should be stored in appropriate containers or inside the vehicle.
