Overview of campgrounds near Bay Pines
Bay Pines is a small census-designated place in Pinellas County on Florida's Gulf coast, sitting between St. Petersburg and Madeira Beach and best known as the home of the Bay Pines Veterans Hospital and National Cemetery. For RV travelers, it functions as a quiet residential base within a densely developed beach corridor, with Tampa International Airport and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport both within easy driving distance.
Campground supply in the immediate area skews toward smaller, long-established RV parks rather than large public campgrounds. St. Petersburg / Madeira Beach KOA Holiday is the closest full-service resort-style property, with Bickley RV Park, Roycroft RV Park, Indian Rocks Travel Park, and Yankee Traveler RV Park filling out the nearby options. Most of these parks cater heavily to snowbirds in winter, so availability tightens well before the season starts.
Public camping is available at Fort De Soto Park to the south, a large Pinellas County park spread across five interconnected islands with beaches, paddling water, and a 236-site campground.
Things to do near Bay Pines
The Gulf beaches are the main draw. Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, and St. Pete Beach sit within a short drive, and the Pinellas Trail passes near the St. Petersburg / Madeira Beach KOA Holiday, giving cyclists and walkers a paved corridor stretching much of the county.
Fort De Soto Park, on five interconnected islands south of Bay Pines, offers roughly seven miles of waterfront, three miles of beaches, a designated paddle trail, a fishing pier, a boat ramp, and the historic Spanish-American War-era fort. Kayak rentals and access to Shell Key Preserve, reachable only by boat, extend the on-water options.
Families also head into downtown St. Petersburg for the waterfront parks, the Dali Museum, and the pier, while anglers can fish from the park piers with a Florida saltwater license.

December - February

Peak RV season along the Pinellas coast runs roughly from Thanksgiving weekend through April, when snowbirds and winter visitors fill private parks and Fort De Soto sites are hardest to secure. Winter days are mild, rarely dropping below 50 degrees, and rain is at its lowest, making this the most comfortable stretch for camping.
Late spring is a shoulder period with warmer temperatures and lighter crowds, though school-break weeks around Easter and spring break bring surges of families to the KOA and to Fort De Soto. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and the highest rainfall totals of the year; local parks stay busy on weekends but weekday availability is often better than in winter.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from August through October. Fort De Soto Park has closed for extended periods following recent hurricanes, so RV travelers should track forecasts and confirm site status before arrival during these months.

Excellent Campervan Experience We recently rented a campervan to travel to Savannah and Northern Georgia. We had a great time, thanks to the excellent orientation provided by Morgan. We truly had everything we needed, from a French Press to start our days out right to a comfy bed that accommodated two adults comfortably. It was an amazing experience, with all the comforts of home while still being able to connect with nature. Morgan was a phenomenal host and we can't recommend him highly enough!

How to book campsites near Bay Pines
Private RV parks in the Bay Pines area, including the St. Petersburg / Madeira Beach KOA Holiday, Bickley RV Park, Roycroft RV Park, Indian Rocks Travel Park, and Yankee Traveler RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Winter monthly and seasonal stays are common, and many snowbirds rebook a year in advance, so calling well ahead is essential for December through March.
Fort De Soto Park is managed by Pinellas County. Reservations open seven months in advance for Pinellas County residents and six months in advance for non-residents, and can be made online through the county's reservation portal at explore.pinellas.gov or by phone at (727) 582-2100. Waterfront sites frequently sell out on the first day of availability.
What to expect on arrival
The Bay Pines area is fully developed suburban Florida, so campgrounds tend to sit on tight, level lots rather than in wooded settings. Sites at private parks near the coast are typically paved or gravel with full hookups, though some are close together and better suited to short stays or self-contained rigs.
Fort De Soto sites include water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, picnic tables, and charcoal grills, with dump stations, showers, and coin laundry on the property. Sites 1 through 85 are limited to tents, vans, pop-ups, and trailers under 16 feet, and pets are allowed only in Area 2, sites 86 through 164.
Expect mosquitoes and no-see-ums, especially near mangroves and after rain. Bring insect repellent, sun protection, and coins for laundry, since much of Fort De Soto is otherwise cashless.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Bay Pines RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Peace of mind is built right in. Every RVezy booking in Bay Pines includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one call away whether you're parked at Fort De Soto or cruising the Pinellas Bayway. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV, and you choose your preferred coverage level at checkout, not the host. While this isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection so you can focus on Gulf Coast sunsets instead of the what-ifs. First-time renters often say this is the feature that finally gave them confidence to book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
You can book your Bay Pines RV trip with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (it is not chosen by the individual host), and your refund depends on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. Review the current policy details in the RVezy Help Center before you finalize, and reach out to RVezy customer support any time, before, during, or after your trip, if your plans shift. Florida's Gulf Coast sits in the Atlantic hurricane zone from June 1 to November 30, so if a named storm threatens your trip, contact support to discuss your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Bay Pines RV trip?
Yes, and Pinellas County is one of the most dog-friendly stretches in Florida. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Bay Pines, then head to Fort De Soto's Paw Playground, an off-leash beach where dogs can splash in the Gulf. Honeymoon Island State Park also has a dedicated dog beach about 45 minutes north. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size or breed notes, most are happy to accommodate well-behaved pets. Pack a collapsible water bowl, Florida heat means hydration breaks every couple of hours.
pinellas.gov/parks/fort-de-soto-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or vacation rental?
Yes, RV delivery in Bay Pines is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive the motorhome or trailer directly to your campsite at St. Petersburg/Madeira Beach KOA, Fort De Soto Campground, or even a private driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. That means zero highway driving stress on day one. Delivery fees are set by each host and often scale with distance, with many waiving the fee for longer bookings. Filter by Delivery on the search page and message hosts to lock in a setup time that matches your check-in window.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bay%20Pines%2C%20FloridaHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Bay Pines?
You've got serious range. Most Bay Pines hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with options to purchase additional miles upfront at a discount, and select listings offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage. From Bay Pines you can reach Clearwater Beach in about 25 minutes, Tampa in 35 to 45 minutes, Sarasota in just over an hour, the Everglades in about 4.5 hours, and the Florida Keys in roughly 6 hours. Discuss your route with the host before booking so they can recommend the right mileage package. pinellas.gov/parks/fort-de-soto-park/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Bay Pines?
Bay Pines is a year-round destination, but the sweet spot is late October through April when daytime highs typically sit in the low 70s to low 80s F with lower humidity, ideal beach weather. This is also snowbird high season, so book your RV rental in Florida at least two to three months ahead. May through September brings highs in the upper 80s to low 90s F, afternoon thunderstorms, and the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30). Summer is still great for short trips with the AC running and early beach mornings, and rates often drop. Late April and early May offer warm Gulf swims, fewer crowds, and some of the cheapest weekly rates of the year.
weather.gov/tbw/I've never rented an RV before. Will I actually be able to drive it?
You'll do great, and you won't be alone. First time renting an RV in Bay Pines is easier than most people expect because the area's main roads (Bay Pines Boulevard, Park Boulevard, Tyrone Boulevard) are flat, wide, and well-signed. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and the dump process, and many also send video walkthroughs ahead of time. If highway driving makes you nervous, choose a host who offers delivery and setup directly to your campground. For your first trip, a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer is a great pick, they handle much like a large van.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I get a flat tire or break down during my trip?
Help is built into every booking. RVezy rentals include 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing across Florida. One call gets a technician dispatched to your location, whether you're on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, parked at Honeymoon Island, or pulled off I-275. Your host is also a text away for quick questions about the rig, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Bay Pines so it's ready the moment you need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Bay Pines RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Cross-state travel is easy and encouraged. From Bay Pines you can road trip into Georgia, Alabama, or up to the Carolinas without restrictions on most listings, just confirm your route with the host before booking. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and insurance terms, so message them directly to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend across that border. Popular cross-state runs include Savannah (about 5.5 hours), Atlanta (about 8 hours), and New Orleans (about 10 hours). Locking in mileage and route details up front keeps everything smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Bay Pines RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, so let's make it predictable. Florida gas prices generally run in the low to mid $3 per gallon range, and stations along US-19 and 66th Street are usually the cheapest near Bay Pines. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and big Class A rigs 6 to 9 mpg. A 200-mile weekend loop to Sarasota and back in a Class C usually runs about $60 to $100 in fuel. Download the GasBuddy app and fuel up before crossing the Sunshine Skyway, prices climb fast in Manatee County tourist zones.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Bay Pines RV trip?
Booking early is the move on the Gulf Coast. Fort De Soto Park, the crown jewel of campgrounds near Bay Pines, opens reservations up to six months out through the Pinellas County reservation system and fills quickly for winter weekends. Florida State Parks like Hillsborough River and Anastasia accept bookings 11 months ahead through the Florida State Parks reservation site. Private parks like the St. Petersburg/Madeira Beach KOA generally have more last-minute openings, especially mid-week. Set a calendar alert for the exact morning your dates open six or eleven months out, that's when prime waterfront sites disappear fastest.
floridastateparks.org/What are driving conditions like around Bay Pines for a larger RV?
Bay Pines is one of the easier Florida areas to drive an RV. Roads are flat, with no mountains or steep grades, and major routes like I-275, US-19, and Park Boulevard have wide lanes. Watch for low clearances on the Corey Causeway and always check your rig's posted height before crossing the Sunshine Skyway, which collects a toll for two-axle vehicles by SunPass or Toll-By-Plate. Afternoon summer thunderstorms can be intense, so plan driving for mornings. Beach communities like Madeira and Treasure Island have tighter streets, so delivery is the smart play there. With SunPass-compatible tolling, the drive is genuinely stress-free.
fdot.gov/traffic/trafficservices/itemsofinterest/clearance.shtmWhat hookups and amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Bay Pines?
You'll be comfortable. Most campgrounds near Bay Pines offer full hookups, 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer, along with Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. The St. Petersburg/Madeira Beach KOA features a heated pool, hot tub, and a dog play area. Fort De Soto offers water and electric at every site plus a dedicated dump station and potable water fill. Need to dump and refill mid-trip? Many Flying J and Pilot truck stops along I-75 have public dump stations. Cable hookups are common at private parks, and cell service across Pinellas County is strong on all major carriers, so streaming and remote work both work well.
pinellas.gov/parks/fort-de-soto-park/What's inside a typical Bay Pines RV rental?
You'll feel right at home. A motorhome or campervan rental in Bay Pines typically includes a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet bath or full bathroom with shower, a dinette, AC and heat, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Class A and C rigs often add a generator for boondocking, an awning, outdoor speakers, and 12-volt TVs. Travel trailers add more sleeping space and often sleep six to eight. Each listing shows exact specs, photos, and a sleeps count, so filter by your group size and amenities like generator or pet-friendly to find the right rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bay%20Pines%2C%20FloridaWhat add-ons and extras do hosts usually offer?
Plenty, and they make your trip easier. Bay Pines hosts commonly offer delivery and setup, generator use, bike rentals, kayak or paddleboard add-ons (great for Long Bayou), camp chairs and tables, linens and kitchen kits, and propane top-ups. Pickup windows are typically afternoon with morning dropoff, and many hosts allow flexible timing on slower days. Mileage policies range from around 100 free miles per night to fully unlimited on select listings. Bundle delivery with a kayak add-on and you can launch right from many local campgrounds into the bayou.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bay%20Pines%2C%20FloridaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Bay Pines on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash to the host and no last-minute surprises. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is placed as an authorization hold on your card before pickup, then released after dropoff once the host confirms the RV came back clean and undamaged. To avoid any deposit issues, photograph the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, dump tanks before returning, and refuel to the level noted in your rental agreement.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Bay Pines?
You're perfectly positioned for an unforgettable Gulf Coast adventure.
