Campgrounds near Desoto Acres
Desoto Acres is an unincorporated community in Sarasota County on Florida's Gulf Coast, just north of downtown Sarasota and a short drive from Siesta Key, Lido Beach, and the Myakka River basin. The area sits within easy reach of I-75, making it a practical base for RV travelers moving between Tampa Bay and Fort Myers.
Nearby RV options range from full-service resorts to smaller, quieter parks. Sarasota Lakes RV Resort and Horseshoe Cove RV Resort cater to longer stays with resort-style amenities, while Tropical Gardens RV Park and Palm Terrace offer more modest, straightforward sites. Linger Lodge RV Resort and Restaurant sits along the north bank of the Braden River in Bradenton and combines hookups with an on-site restaurant.
Public camping is available within a short drive at Myakka River State Park to the east and Oscar Scherer State Park to the south, both managed by the Florida State Parks system. Together, private resorts and state parks give renters a mix of beach-adjacent, riverfront, and inland options.
Things to do near Desoto Acres
Beach access is the main draw. Siesta Key, Lido Key, and Turtle Beach are all within about a half-hour drive, offering swimming, shelling, and kayak rentals. Downtown Sarasota adds Marina Jack, the Ringling Museum, and the Sarasota Farmers Market on weekends.
For outdoor activity, Myakka River State Park covers roughly 37,000 acres of pine flatwoods, wetlands, and prairie, with airboat tours, a canopy walkway, and one of Florida's largest alligator populations. Oscar Scherer State Park protects scrub-jay habitat and has a freshwater lake with a boat launch and swimming area.
Families often add the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium on City Island, and cyclists can pick up the Legacy Trail, a paved rail-trail running south toward Venice.

Sites at Myakka River and Oscar Scherer state parks routinely book out months ahead during this window, and monthly-stay resorts often require reservations well in advance.
Late spring and early summer bring hot, humid weather and the start of the wet season. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily from June through September, and the Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from August through October. Travelers in these months should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm evacuation policies with their campground.
Fall shoulder season, particularly late October and November, can offer warm water, lower humidity, and easier reservations. Sea turtle nesting on Gulf beaches runs May through October, with lighting restrictions along the shore during that period.

Excellent Campervan Experience We recently rented a campervan to travel to Savannah and Northern Georgia. We had a great time, thanks to the excellent orientation provided by Morgan. We truly had everything we needed, from a French Press to start our days out right to a comfy bed that accommodated two adults comfortably. It was an amazing experience, with all the comforts of home while still being able to connect with nature. Morgan was a phenomenal host and we can't recommend him highly enough!

How to book near Desoto Acres
Florida State Parks, including Myakka River and Oscar Scherer, take reservations through the official Florida State Parks reservation website or by phone. Florida residents can book up to 11 months in advance, and non-residents up to 10 months, with new inventory released daily at 8 a.m. Eastern time. Popular winter dates typically fill the day the window opens.
Sarasota County operates Turtle Beach Campground on Siesta Key, which uses a separate county reservation system with its own advance window. Private parks such as Sarasota Lakes RV Resort, Horseshoe Cove RV Resort, Tropical Gardens RV Park, Palm Terrace, and Linger Lodge RV Resort and Restaurant handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone.
For winter travel, RV renters should aim to reserve six to twelve months out. Summer and early fall availability is usually easier, though hurricane cancellations can shift plans on short notice.
What to expect on the ground
Most private parks near Desoto Acres offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, paved or hard-packed pads, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Many operate as 55-plus communities during winter months, so RV renters traveling with children should confirm age policies before booking.
State park sites tend to be more natural, with water and electric but limited or no sewer at the site. Dump stations are available on the way out. Sites at Myakka River and Oscar Scherer accommodate a range of RV lengths, though some loops have tight turns and low branches.
Expect mosquitoes and no-see-ums, especially near water and after rain. Alligators are present in most freshwater bodies, so pets should be leashed and kept back from shorelines and canal edges.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Desoto Acres. Florida does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for non-commercial RVs, which covers virtually every motorhome, campervan, and travel trailer on RVezy. Approved renters must generally be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during checkout, so there is no paperwork drama at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Desoto Acres options are plentiful. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of motorhomes and travel trailers where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Take them to Paw Park at Woodmere on Beneva Road, or to Brohard Paw Park in Venice, the only beach in Sarasota County where dogs can legally run in the surf. Myakka River State Park also allows leashed pets on most trails and in the campground. Pro tip: message the host before booking to share your pet's size and breed, and ask about any pet cleaning fee so there are no surprises.

Yes, RV delivery Desoto Acres is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will deliver the rig straight to Myakka River State Park, Sun Outdoors Sarasota, Turtle Beach Campground on Siesta Key, or even your friend's driveway in Lakewood Ranch. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every switch and valve so you never feel lost. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to instantly see hosts offering this service. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so a nearby setup off Fruitville Road costs far less than a haul down to Venice or Englewood.

Pro tip: state park sites release 11 months in advance on ReserveAmerica and disappear fast for winter dates, so set a reminder and pounce.

The sweet spot for RV camping in Desoto Acres is mid-October through April, when daytime highs sit between 72 and 82 degrees, humidity drops, and mosquitoes calm down. January and February are pure perfection, sunny, dry, and breezy, which is why snowbirds flock here. Summer (June to September) brings 90-degree heat, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and Atlantic hurricane season, but rates are dramatically lower and Gulf swims feel amazing. Shoulder months like late April, May, and October are the smart-money move with warm beaches and far fewer crowds. Local insider tip: aim for a trip around the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix in early July or the Sarasota Film Festival in April for an extra dose of local flavor.

You'll absolutely be okay, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a full pickup orientation, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the awning, slide-outs, and dump procedures before you pull away. Desoto Acres sits just off I-75 and Fruitville Road, with wide lanes and straightforward access to most campgrounds, so you won't be threading through narrow downtown streets. If you're still nervous, book a travel trailer that the host delivers and sets up at your campground, or pick a Class B campervan rental Desoto Acres style for easier handling. Pro tip: do your first practice loop through the big parking lot at UTC Mall before heading to the beach.

Your host is also a quick text away to troubleshoot quirks unique to their rig, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the rig's VIN plate for faster service.

Drive 75 miles north to Tampa and Clearwater for theme parks and white-sand beaches, 60 miles south to Fort Myers and Sanibel Island for shelling, 130 miles east to Orlando for Disney and Universal, or 230 miles southeast to Everglades National Park for airboat rides and gator spotting. The Florida Keys are a 5-hour drive to Key Largo and a stunning 7-hour cruise to Key West along the Overseas Highway. Cross-border tip: travel into Canada is sometimes allowed with host approval, but trips into Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limits.
visitflorida.com/travel-ideas/road-trips/How much should I budget for fuel on my Desoto Acres RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on any Desoto Acres RV trip, but it's easy to plan for. Expect 7 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A and large Class C motorhomes, 10 to 14 for smaller Class C rigs and travel trailers (your tow vehicle), and 18 to 22 for a Class B campervan. Florida gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, often $3.00 to $3.40 per gallon in the Sarasota area, with diesel slightly higher. A weekend loop to Myakka and Siesta Key might use just one tank, while an Orlando round-trip could need two. Pro tip: fuel up at the Wawa or Buc-ee's on the way out of town for the best prices and easiest pull-through pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Desoto Acres?
Book early, especially for winter. Florida State Parks like Myakka River and Oscar Scherer open reservations 11 months in advance through Reserve.FloridaStateParks.org, and prime winter sites (January through March) get snapped up within minutes of release. Private resorts like Sun Outdoors Sarasota and Sarasota Sunny South often fill 3 to 6 months out for snowbird season but stay flexible in summer and early fall. For a last-minute Desoto Acres RV trip, target shoulder seasons (May, October, November) when you can often grab a site a week ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar alert at 8 a.m. exactly 11 months before your target date for state park sites, that's when the booking window opens and the magic happens.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Desoto Acres and Sarasota?
Driving in and around Desoto Acres is genuinely RV-friendly. I-75 runs right alongside the community, giving you smooth, flat, multi-lane access in every direction with no mountain passes or steep grades. Local roads like Fruitville, Bee Ridge, and University Parkway are wide and easy. Watch for a few things: afternoon thunderstorms from June through September can drop heavy rain fast, so pull off if visibility drops, the John Ringling Causeway and other bridges to Lido and Longboat Key can get gusty, and snowbird season (January to March) means heavier traffic on US-41 (Tamiami Trail). Avoid driving narrow St. Armands Circle in a big rig. Pro tip: leave early morning to beat both heat and traffic, especially heading to the beaches.

Myakka River State Park and Oscar Scherer State Park offer water and electric at sites, with central dump stations and potable water fill-ups near the entrance. Turtle Beach Campground on Siesta Key has full hookups plus 50-amp power. Resort-style parks like Sun Outdoors Sarasota throw in heated pools, pickleball, and bark parks. Need to dump or fill up on the way home? The Sarasota County landfill on Knights Trail Road has a public RV dump station for a small fee. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground, Florida summer heat makes you thirsty fast.

Expect comfortable beds (queens are standard, with bunks in family rigs), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a full bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning (essential in Florida), heat, a flat-screen TV, and seatbelts for every passenger. Most rigs also include outdoor chairs, an awning, leveling blocks, sewer hose, and fresh linens. Many hosts add WiFi hotspots, onboard generators for boondocking, and even paddleboards or bikes. Check the listing's Features section to see exactly what's included. Pro tip: confirm the AC's BTU rating with your host if you're booking in July or August, you'll want serious cooling power.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/consumer-education/recreational-vehicles/What add-ons and pickup options can I choose for my Desoto Acres RV rental?

Popular add-ons include linen and kitchen packages, generator use, beach gear (chairs, umbrellas, coolers), bikes, kayaks, and pet fees, with exact pricing set per listing. Delivery and setup is popular here, especially for Siesta Key, Myakka River State Park, and Turtle Beach Campground, with fees usually based on round-trip distance. Standard pickup is at the host's location, and many listings offer Instant Book to skip approval delays. Mileage policies vary by host, so look for unlimited mileage listings if you are heading to Orlando or the Keys. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than asking the morning of pickup, hosts appreciate the heads-up and you will save the scramble.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Desoto%20Acres%2C%20FloridaHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Desoto Acres?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, so your booking is protected from start to finish. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized separately from your booking payment and held during your trip, then released back to you after the trip wraps, assuming the rig comes back in the same shape it left. To avoid any deposit hiccups on your Desoto Acres RV trip, do a thorough walkaround with the host and snap photos at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: return the rig with a full fuel tank and empty waste tanks to skip the most common deductions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle Florida heat and summer storms during my Desoto Acres RV trip?
Florida's heat is real but totally manageable with the right rig and rhythm. Every RV on the platform comes with air conditioning, and most local campgrounds offer 50-amp shore power so you can run AC nonstop, even when it's 94 degrees outside. Drive in the morning when temperatures are coolest and traffic is lightest, and plan beach time before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to dodge the worst sun. Afternoon thunderstorms are nearly daily from June to September, so pop the awning in early and check radar before lightning rolls in. Hurricane season runs June through November, so keep an eye on the National Hurricane Center forecasts. Shoulder seasons (October, April, May) are the smart-money move for ideal weather and lower rates.
