Campgrounds near Harlem, Florida
Harlem is a small unincorporated community in Hendry County on the southwest side of Lake Okeechobee, just east of Clewiston. RV travelers use it as a base for the lake, the Herbert Hoover Dike trail, and the agricultural belt that stretches from Clewiston to Belle Glade and South Bay. Most nearby campgrounds sit within a short drive along US Highway 27, which rings the south end of the lake.
Options closest to Harlem include Crooked Hook RV Resort, an established park along US 27 in Clewiston with full hookups and a heated pool, and Torry Island Campground, a City of Belle Glade waterfront park on the southern shore of the lake. Slightly farther out, The Glades RV Resort, Golf and Marina sits along the Caloosahatchee River in Moore Haven with a nine-hole course and marina, while North Lake Estates RV Resort and Twin Palms Resort add more Okeechobee-area choices.
The area skews toward fishing, boating, and snowbird travel rather than mountain or beach camping, so parks are generally flat, RV-focused, and open year-round.
Things to do near Harlem
Lake Okeechobee is the main draw. The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail runs on top of the Herbert Hoover Dike and circles the lake, offering flat hiking, biking, and lake views, with strong wildlife viewing in fall and winter when herons, egrets, and wintering waterfowl are abundant. Bass fishing is the signature activity, and marinas in Clewiston and Belle Glade run guided trips and airboat tours.
Families can combine lake time with day trips. The Everglades and Big Cypress National Preserve lie a short drive south, and both the Gulf and Atlantic coasts are reachable in roughly an hour. Golfers have options at Belle Glade Golf Club, the only course located on the shores of Lake Okeechobee, and at the on-site nine-hole course at The Glades RV Resort, Golf and Marina.

Camping season around Lake Okeechobee runs year-round because of the subtropical climate, but the calendar splits sharply into two halves. Winter, roughly December through March, is the peak booking window. Northern snowbirds fill many parks for weeks or full seasons, daytime highs sit in the mid-70s, and rain is at its lowest. Advance reservations are strongly recommended in this window.
Spring shoulder months bring warm, mostly dry conditions and easier availability. Summer, from June through early October, is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and mosquitoes. Access roads to some lakeside camping areas can flood during the June to October rainy season.
Fall overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks in September. Storms and heavy rain can force short-notice closures or evacuations at lakefront parks, so travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm conditions before arriving.
How to book campgrounds near Harlem
Most parks near Harlem are privately operated and book directly through their own websites or by phone, rather than through a central agency system. Crooked Hook RV Resort, The Glades RV Resort, Golf and Marina, North Lake Estates RV Resort, and Twin Palms Resort all take reservations directly, and transient sites can be limited because many spots are held by seasonal residents.
Torry Island Campground is operated by the City of Belle Glade and accepts reservations through its office and an online booking system. For winter stays, book several months ahead. Same-day and shoulder-season availability is more common in late spring and summer. Some resorts near Harlem are age-restricted 55-plus communities, so families traveling with children should confirm the policy before booking.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat, open, RV-focused parks rather than forested tent campgrounds. Sites typically offer 30- and 50-amp service, full hookups, and concrete or gravel pads, with pull-throughs available at the larger resorts. Amenities commonly include pools, laundry, recreation halls, and boat ramps or canal access.
The landscape is agricultural. Sugar cane fields surround much of the Clewiston side of the lake, and controlled cane burning in the winter harvest season can send smoke and ash toward nearby parks. Airboat traffic on the lake and canals can be loud, especially near waterfront sites.
Cell coverage is uneven in the more remote lakeside parks, and Wi-Fi quality varies. Wildlife includes alligators along canals and shorelines, so keep pets leashed and children close to the site near any water's edge.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Harlem, FL
How much does an RV rental in Harlem, FL typically cost, and how can I save?
An RV rental in Harlem, FL is one of the more affordable basecamps in South Florida because you skip the coastal markup of West Palm Beach and Fort Myers. Travel trailers in the area generally start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs sit closer to $250 to $400. For a cheap RV rental Harlem, FL travelers should target the summer shoulder season (June through September) when bass tournaments slow down and hosts often discount weekly stays. Booking three or more nights also unlocks lower nightly rates with many hosts. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and stays of 7+ nights on RVezy to surface the best value listings near Lake Okeechobee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Harlem,FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Harlem, FL?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Harlem, FL. Florida law specifically exempts personal-use recreational vehicles from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements, no matter the size of the rig, so your everyday Class E or out-of-state equivalent is fine for Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and even big Class A coaches. To book on RVezy, you'll need to be 25 or older and complete a quick ID confirmation through the platform. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), usually under $20 from your local auto club, and you're road-ready for Lake Okeechobee.
flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/Is my RV rental in Harlem, FL protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, and this is one of the strongest reasons to book through RVezy. Every RV rental in Harlem, FL booked through the platform includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered for eligible damages to the vehicle and never stranded if you get a flat on US-27 or have an issue at your campsite near Clewiston. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip (the guest selects this, not the host), giving you real financial peace of mind. Pro tip: do a walkthrough video with your host at pickup so your Lake Okeechobee adventure starts fully documented and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Harlem, FL RV trip?
Cancellation worries should not stop you from booking an RV rental in Harlem, FL. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every booking, and the refund amount depends on how far in advance of your trip start date you cancel. If a hurricane, tropical storm, or other major event impacts your Lake Okeechobee plans (always a possibility between June and November in South Florida), the RVezy support team works with you and the host directly. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Harlem rigs and review the cancellation policy details in the RVezy Help Center before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Harlem, FL?
Yes. A pet-friendly RV rental in Harlem, FL is easy to find: use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to surface listings that allow dogs and cats, then message the host about any size or breed notes. Once you are here, dogs are allowed on-leash along the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) atop the Herbert Hoover Dike just minutes north of Harlem, and nearby campgrounds including Okeechobee Landings RV Resort in Clewiston and Big Cypress RV Resort welcome pets. Pro tip: pack a cooling mat and a collapsible water bowl. South Florida humidity is intense, and the dike trail offers almost no shade.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Harlem,Florida&Features=PetFriendlyCan the RV be delivered to my campground or fishing spot near Harlem?
Yes, RV delivery in Harlem, FL is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are flying into West Palm Beach or Fort Myers. Many hosts on RVezy will drive the motorhome or travel trailer directly to your campground, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular drop-off spots include Roland Martin Marina & Resort in Clewiston, Okeechobee Landings, and campgrounds along US-27. Use the Delivery filter and message the host with your destination address to get an exact quote, since fees usually scale with mileage. Pro tip: delivery is ideal for first-time renters who would rather not drive a 30-foot rig on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Harlem,Florida&Features=DeliveryHow far can I drive, and what's the mileage policy on a Harlem, FL RV rental?
You've got plenty of road ahead of you. Each host sets the daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage upgrade for a flat fee, which is the smart move for any real Florida road trip. From Harlem you're only about 4 miles to downtown Clewiston, 60 miles east to West Palm Beach, 65 miles west to Fort Myers, 90 miles north to Orlando, and roughly 100 miles southeast to the Florida Keys gateway in Homestead. Pro tip: if you're planning to circle Lake Okeechobee (about 110 miles around the dike) or chase Gulf and Atlantic beaches in one trip, ask the host about unlimited miles before you book.
fdot.gov/agencyresources/mapsWhere are the best campgrounds near Harlem, FL?
You are surrounded by excellent options for RV camping near Harlem, FL. Top picks within a short drive include Okeechobee Landings RV Resort in Clewiston (about 5 minutes north) with a pool and full hookups, Crooked Hook RV Resort on US-27 in Clewiston (popular with bass anglers), Big Cypress RV Resort on the Big Cypress Seminole Reservation about an hour south, Aqua Isles in LaBelle (about 30 miles west) with riverfront sites, and Moore Haven KOA on the western side of Lake Okeechobee. Pro tip: snowbird season (January through March) books out fast, so reserve as soon as your dates are locked.
discoverhendrycounty.com/When is the best time of year for a Harlem, FL RV trip?
The sweet spot is November through April, when Harlem's humid subtropical climate cools off to daytime highs in the 70s and low 80s with very little rain. This dry season lines up perfectly with peak largemouth bass season on Lake Okeechobee, the Clewiston Sugar Festival in spring, and the November Big O Hike on the dike. Summer (June through September) brings highs in the low 90s, high humidity, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and Atlantic hurricane season, but you'll find the cheapest rates and have campgrounds practically to yourself. Pro tip: aim for late January through early March for the textbook Florida RV trip, sunny, breezy, and bug-light.
weather.gov/mfl/I have never rented an RV before. Will I really be okay in Harlem, FL?
You will do great, and Harlem is one of the easier places in Florida to learn. Every RVezy booking starts with a hands-on walkthrough where your host shows you the propane, slide-outs, generator, water systems, awning, and dash controls before you pull away. If this is your first time renting an RV, ask for a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer in the 20 to 25-foot range: plenty of room to sleep a family but easy to maneuver. The roads around Harlem (US-27, SR-80) are flat, straight, and lightly trafficked compared to coastal Florida. Pro tip: many hosts will meet you at your campground for setup, so your first 24 hours are pure relaxation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Harlem RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on US-27, a dead battery at Okeechobee Landings, or a tow off the Herbert Hoover Dike access road is one phone call away. You will also have your host's direct contact (they know their rig inside-out) and the RVezy support team available before, during, and after the trip. Hendry County has service stations in Clewiston and LaBelle, so help is rarely far. Pro tip: snap photos of tire pressures and fluid levels during your walkthrough so you have a baseline if something comes up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Harlem, FL?
Harlem's inland location makes it a great launchpad for an RV road trip from Harlem, FL. Popular routes include the Lake Okeechobee Loop (about 110 miles around the dike, a perfect 2 to 3 night ride), Harlem to Everglades National Park via Big Cypress and Shark Valley (about 90 miles south), Harlem to Sanibel Island and Fort Myers Beach (about 75 miles west on SR-80), Harlem to the Florida Keys via Homestead (about 180 miles southeast), and Harlem to Kennedy Space Center and Orlando (about 170 miles north). Cross-state travel within the U.S. is allowed, but trips into Mexico are not covered. Pro tip: confirm any cross-border plans with your host before you book.
visitflorida.com/How much should I budget for fuel on a Harlem, FL RV trip?
Fuel is the line item most renters overestimate, here's the real math. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches 7 to 10 MPG. Florida gas prices typically run close to the national average, and Harlem sits on US-27 with plenty of stations in neighboring Clewiston (Wawa, Murphy USA, RaceTrac) and Pioneer. For a 4-night loop around Lake Okeechobee in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $140 in gas. Pro tip: fuel up before turning south toward the Big Cypress Reservation, station spacing thins out fast once you leave US-27, and prices climb the closer you get to the Everglades.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Harlem, FL?
For peak winter dates (January through March), reserve your site 4 to 6 months ahead: this is prime snowbird and bass-tournament season around Lake Okeechobee, and the best riverfront spots at places like Aqua Isles in LaBelle disappear quickly. For shoulder months, 4 to 6 weeks is usually plenty, and summer trips can often be booked just a week out. Florida State Parks accept reservations up to 11 months ahead through the official Florida State Parks reservation system. Private parks like Okeechobee Landings and Crooked Hook RV Resort book directly via phone or their websites. Pro tip: call the campground if the online calendar looks full, they sometimes hold back sites for phone bookings.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Harlem, FL?
You'll find some of the easiest RV driving in all of Florida here. US-27 and State Road 80 are wide, flat, mostly two to four lanes, with generous shoulders and very little of the stop-and-go chaos you'd hit on I-95 or I-4. The biggest local hazards are sudden afternoon thunderstorms in summer (pull over, wait 20 minutes, drive on), strong crosswinds atop the Herbert Hoover Dike access roads, and the occasional sandhill crane or alligator near canals, especially at dawn and dusk. Sugar-harvest season (October through April) brings slow-moving cane trucks on SR-80, so pass with patience. Pro tip: avoid driving US-27 between Clewiston and South Bay at sunset, glare off the lake is brutal.
fdot.gov/traffic/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Harlem, FL?
Local parks are well set up for full-service RV camping near Harlem, FL. Most campgrounds in the area (Okeechobee Landings, Crooked Hook, Aqua Isles, Big Cypress RV Resort) offer full hookups, 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, pools, laundry, and bathhouses. Dump stations and potable water fills are available on-site at each of these parks. Many sites are pull-through and shaded by cabbage palms, ideal for big rigs. Pro tip: Lake Okeechobee water is hard and mineral-heavy, so use an inline water filter (your host likely provides one) to protect the RV's plumbing and keep your coffee tasting right.
discoverhendrycounty.com/What is inside a typical Harlem, FL RV rental?
You will be impressed by how much fits inside. A typical motorhome rental in Harlem, FL includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and/or sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, microwave, gas stove, and often an oven, a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning (essential here), furnace, awning, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings add a TV, Wi-Fi hotspot, generator or solar, outdoor speakers, and a backup camera. A campervan rental in Harlem, FL (Class B) is more compact but includes the essentials plus better fuel economy. Pro tip: confirm the rooftop AC with your host before booking, Florida summers demand a strong unit.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Harlem,FloridaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize your trip with all sorts of extras. Common host add-ons in the Harlem area include camping chairs, generators, propane fills, bike racks, kayaks (huge for Lake Okeechobee), fishing gear, kitchen kits, linens, outdoor mats, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Hendry or Palm Beach County, but many offer paid delivery to your campground or even to Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) about 60 miles east. Mileage policies vary by host (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day with unlimited-mile upgrades available), so review the listing carefully. Pro tip: bundle delivery + setup + linens with a longer rental, hosts often discount the package for stays of 5 nights or more.
flypbi.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Harlem, FL?
Booking is smooth and transparent. Payment is handled securely through RVezy, never directly to the host in cash, so your reservation, protection plan, and roadside assistance are all locked in the moment you check out. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on rig size and value) and released after a successful return inspection. As long as you return the RV on time, with the agreed fuel and tank levels, and without damage, you get the full deposit back. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with your host at both pickup and drop-off, it is the fastest way to keep your deposit dispute-free.
