Campgrounds near Iona, Florida
Iona is an unincorporated community in Lee County, on the Fort Myers side of the Caloosahatchee River delta. It sits between McGregor Boulevard and the causeways leading to Sanibel Island and Fort Myers Beach, which puts RV travelers within a short drive of Gulf beaches, boat ramps, and grocery corridors along US-41 and Summerlin Road.
The area is dominated by private, full-hookup RV resorts rather than public campgrounds. Groves RV Resort and McGregor RV Park sit inland along the McGregor corridor, while Fort Myers Beach RV Resort, Siesta Bay RV Resort, and Indian Creek RV Resort cluster closer to Estero Bay and the Fort Myers Beach approach. Most local parks cater to snowbirds with paved pads, laundry, pools, and 30/50-amp service.
Public camping is not available inside the closest state park, Lovers Key, which is day-use only. RV travelers who want a state-park experience typically drive to Koreshan State Park in Estero or inland options in Lee and Charlotte counties, then base out of a private Iona-area resort for beach days.
Things to do around Iona
Beach days are the main draw. Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island, Bunche Beach Preserve, and Sanibel and Captiva islands are all reachable within thirty minutes, with shelling, swimming, and fishing piers along the way. Lovers Key State Park offers a long stretch of barrier-island beach plus kayak launches for spotting manatees, dolphins, and ospreys along its mangrove estuary.
Inland, families can visit Lakes Regional Park for paved bike loops, the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in downtown Fort Myers, and Manatee Park on the Caloosahatchee for winter manatee viewing. Boat charters and dolphin cruises run out of Fort Myers Beach and Punta Rassa year-round, weather permitting.

Peak season runs January through March. Snowbird demand fills private RV resorts in the Iona and Fort Myers Beach area, and many sites are booked months in advance by returning long-stay guests. Daytime highs sit in the mid-70s Fahrenheit with low humidity, which is ideal for beach days and paddling.
Shoulder months in April, May, October, and November offer easier bookings and warmer water. Rainfall is light in spring, though late-spring afternoons can be hot. Summer, from June through September, is the rainy season, with near-daily thunderstorms and high humidity; some resorts run reduced schedules and rates drop accordingly.
Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August, September, and early October. Southwest Florida was directly impacted by Hurricane Ian, and a number of RV parks in Lee and Collier counties experienced extended closures afterward. Confirm operating status directly with the resort before booking a late-summer or early-fall trip.

This was my 1st time renting an RV. Cathy and Jose were fantastic to work with. From explaining the overall process to an “orientation meeting”, they were so helpful. Weather and traffic delayed my return by a couple of hours. Communication remained open and all was fine. Excellent vehicle and even better support where needed. We’ll definitely keep Cathy and Jose in mind for our next adventure 😉

My experience with Jose and his wife was amazing. They were very attentive and proactive with my needs. The RV was outstanding and we fell in love with not only the RV but the overall experience.

How to book RV sites near Iona
Private resorts around Iona take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and many also list availability through Good Sam, Campspot, and RoverPass. For January through March arrivals, book six to nine months out; some long-stay guests renew the same site year over year, so shorter transient stays are best requested well in advance.
Florida state parks, including Koreshan to the south and Cayo Costa to the west, are reserved through the Florida State Parks reservation system. Florida residents can book up to 11 months in advance, while non-residents can book up to 10 months in advance, with new inventory released daily at 8 a.m. Eastern. County and regional parks in Lee County use separate systems, so check each park's page before assuming a shared portal.
What to expect on the ground
Most Iona-area RV resorts are paved, tightly spaced, and oriented toward larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs, with full hookups, cable, and Wi-Fi. Groves RV Resort, McGregor RV Park, Siesta Bay RV Resort, and Indian Creek RV Resort include amenity buildings, laundry, and pools; several enforce age restrictions or long-stay preferences during peak months, so travelers with children should confirm policies at booking.
Roads in and out of the resorts feed onto Summerlin Road, McGregor Boulevard, and San Carlos Boulevard, which back up on winter weekends and around beach access points. Grocery stores, marine fuel, propane, and RV service are all available within a short drive. Cell coverage is strong across major carriers, and mosquitoes are a factor near mangrove edges after summer rain.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Iona, FL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Iona, FL?
RV rental in Iona is one of the most affordable ways to experience Southwest Florida's beaches and barrier islands. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $95 to $150 per night, campervans from $125 to $200, and Class C motorhomes between $175 and $325 per night, depending on size, season, and amenities. Snowbird season (January through March) is the priciest stretch, so target late April or September for the best deals on a cheap RV rental Iona. Booking Sunday through Thursday often unlocks weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent from many hosts, which adds up fast when you're parked near Sanibel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Iona%2C%20FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Iona, Florida?
Good news: a regular Class E Florida driver's license (or your home state/country equivalent) is all you need to rent any RV on RVezy in Iona, FL, including big Class A motorhomes. Florida does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal recreational vehicles. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. You'll also need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly approval comes through, often in under an hour, so you can lock in your dates and start planning the Sanibel Causeway sunset stop.
flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/what-to-bring/Is insurance and roadside assistance included with my Iona RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Iona booked through RVezy includes a built-in protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you pull out of the host's driveway. RVezy's renter protection plans cover accidental damage to the vehicle, giving you real financial peace of mind even if a Florida thunderstorm sends a palm frond onto the roof. During checkout, you choose from multiple protection tiers so you select the level of coverage that fits your trip. If you get a flat on McGregor Boulevard or need a jump near Bunche Beach, one call to roadside assistance and help is dispatched, day or night.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Iona RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every Iona RV rental, which means consistent, transparent rules across all listings. You get a money-back grace period right after booking, and refunds beyond that depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host has to cancel, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so you're not left scrambling. The bottom line: you can reserve your dates now with confidence, and full cancellation details are spelled out in RVezy's Help Center before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Iona RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Iona options are plentiful, since Southwest Florida is one of the most dog-loving regions in the country. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots; some charge a small cleaning fee or refundable deposit, all spelled out on the listing. Once you're here, the Dog Beach at the south end of Estero Boulevard on Fort Myers Beach and the off-leash area at Bonita Beach Dog Park (about 30 minutes south) are local favorites. Bunche Beach Preserve, just 10 minutes from Iona, also allows leashed dogs on the sand. Pack a towel, a fresh-water jug, and a tick check routine since Florida bugs are real.
leegov.com/parks/parks/bunchebeachCan the RV be delivered to my campground or vacation rental in Iona?
Yes, RV delivery Iona is widely available and it's hands-down the easiest way to start a Florida RV trip, especially if you're flying into Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), just 15 minutes away. Many hosts will drop the rig at Fort Myers Beach RV Resort, San Carlos RV Resort & Marina, Iona Ranch, or even a private vacation home driveway, then handle the leveling, hookups, and slide-outs before walking you through every system. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and what they charge (usually a per-mile fee). It's a game-changer for first-timers who want the camper van life without learning to back into a tight site on day one.
flylcpa.com/rsw/How far can I drive on an RV rental from Iona, FL?
You've got serious range. Hosts in Iona set their own mileage policies, and many include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with RV rental with unlimited mileage available on select listings, perfect for a longer RV road trip from Iona. To put that in perspective: the Everglades National Park Gulf Coast entrance is about 70 miles southeast, Key Largo is around 175 miles, Naples is 25 miles south, and Tampa sits 125 miles north up I-75. A classic week-long loop hitting Sanibel, Marco Island, and the Everglades fits comfortably in most mileage allowances. If you're planning a bigger Florida circuit, message hosts before booking to confirm mileage and lock in the best deal.
nps.gov/ever/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat are the best campgrounds near Iona, FL?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Iona put you minutes from the Gulf of Mexico. Top picks include Fort Myers Beach RV Resort on San Carlos Boulevard (heated pool, walkable to the beach), San Carlos RV Resort & Island Marina (boat slips and saltwater fishing right outside your door), Cypress Woods RV Resort in Fort Myers, Groves RV Resort in south Fort Myers, and Koreshan State Park in Estero (a historic park with shaded sites about 20 minutes south). For a barrier-island vibe, Periwinkle Park on Sanibel is a long-time favorite. Most accept reservations 6 to 11 months out, so book early for January through March.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Iona, FL?
Here's the secret locals know: Iona, FL is a true winter and shoulder-season destination. From mid-November through April, daytime highs hover between 75°F and 83°F with low humidity and almost no rain, the dream weather for RV camping Iona. January averages a high near 71°F and a low of 58°F, so you'll want a light jacket for sunset on Sanibel. Summer (June through September) is hot and humid with highs near 89°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, plus it's hurricane season. Shoulder months like late October, early November, and May offer warm beach weather, lower nightly rates, and far fewer crowds on Fort Myers Beach.
weather.gov/tbw/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Iona?
You've got this, and Iona is honestly one of the friendliest places in Florida to learn. Roads like Summerlin Road, McGregor Boulevard, and Pine Island Road are wide, flat, and well-marked, with none of the mountain grades or tight switchbacks that intimidate first time renting an RV folks. Every RVezy host gives a detailed pickup walkthrough covering the propane, slide-outs, dump valves, generator, and backup camera, and they're a text away during your trip. If you're nervous about driving, book a delivered rental so the host parks and levels it for you. By day two, you'll be cruising over the Sanibel Causeway like a pro.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking in Iona, FL comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in the protection package, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. If a slide-out won't retract at Koreshan State Park at 9 p.m., you call one number and a technician is dispatched. Your host is also a direct lifeline; most reply within minutes and know their rig inside-out. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip through the app. Pro tip: snap photos of every system during the walkthrough so you have a quick visual reference if a warning light pops up on I-75.
fhp.flhsmv.gov/Can I take my Iona RV rental to other states or out of the country?
Yes to other states, with a quick check first. Many hosts allow interstate travel up the Gulf Coast to Tampa, across the Panhandle, or even up to Georgia and the Carolinas, just confirm with your host through the RVezy message thread before booking. Popular multi-state RV road trip from Iona ideas include a Gulf Coast run to Pensacola, a Smoky Mountains escape, or a Carolinas coastal loop. Cross-border travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Canada trips may be possible with host approval, but most Iona renters stick to the sunny U.S. side with the Everglades just over an hour away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage and fuel budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is easy once you know the numbers. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 mpg, Class A's around 6 to 10, campervans 14 to 20, and a truck pulling a travel trailer about 10 to 14 mpg. As of 2026, gas in the Iona/Fort Myers area averages around $3.10 to $3.40 per gallon, slightly below the national average. For a 7-day Southwest Florida loop covering roughly 400 miles, plan on $120 to $180 in fuel for a mid-size motorhome rental Iona. Pro tip: fill up at the Costco or Sam's Club on Colonial Boulevard before you roll out, they're consistently the cheapest pumps in Lee County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Iona?
For peak winter season (January through March), book 6 to 11 months ahead, that's snowbird country and the good sites at Koreshan State Park, Cayo Costa State Park, and Collier-Seminole State Park sell out the moment the reservation window opens at Florida State Parks (exactly 11 months in advance). Private parks like Fort Myers Beach RV Resort usually need 3 to 6 months for winter. Shoulder season (October, November, May) is much more relaxed, often available 2 to 4 weeks out. Local insider tip: set a calendar alert for the 11-month mark and log in early; Florida state park sites genuinely vanish within minutes.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Iona and Fort Myers?
Driving in Iona is genuinely easy: the area is flat with wide boulevards and lighter traffic than Miami or Tampa. The main routes are Summerlin Road, McGregor Boulevard, and US-41 (Tamiami Trail), all of which handle big rigs with no problem. The Sanibel Causeway has a toll for vehicles heading to the island (currently $6 each way for two-axle vehicles), so check your rig's height and axle count before crossing. Afternoon thunderstorms from June to September can dump heavy rain in minutes, so pull off if visibility drops. Snowbird season brings slower traffic on McGregor between 8 and 10 a.m., so plan beach runs for early morning or after 2 p.m.
leegov.com/dotWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Iona?
Most campgrounds near Iona are full-service and snowbird-ready. Expect full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer at the site), Wi-Fi, laundry, heated pools, and clubhouses at private parks like Fort Myers Beach RV Resort, San Carlos RV Resort & Island Marina, and Cypress Woods. State parks like Koreshan offer water and 30/50-amp electric but no sewer at sites, with a centralized dump station on-site. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator, some older Iona-area parks run high city water pressure that can stress RV plumbing.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-parkWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Iona?
More than you'd think. Most RVs available for rent an RV in Iona come fully equipped for a turn-key Florida vacation: a real queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and often an oven, a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (critical in Florida), heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning with LED lights, and an onboard generator or solar setup for boondocking on Cayo Costa. Some hosts include beach chairs, snorkel gear, paddleboards, or a Blackstone griddle as part of the booking. Check the listing's amenities tab; what's included varies, and the photos tell the real story.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup work?
Hosts in Iona, FL offer some genuinely useful add-ons that make a campervan rental Iona experience smoother: linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks, generators, propane refills, and even pre-stocked groceries. Pickup typically happens at the host's home or a meeting point in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, or near RSW airport, with a 60 to 90-minute walkthrough covering every system. Most mileage policies range from 100 to 150 free miles per day with $0.30 to $0.45 per additional mile, and generator hours often include 2 to 4 free per day. Pro tip: ask about a Sanibel beach gear add-on; many hosts will throw in chairs, umbrellas, and a cooler for a small flat fee.
flylcpa.com/rsw/parking-transportation/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, and your booking is confirmed once payment is processed. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment and released after your trip ends assuming no damage. To avoid hiccups: do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your booking requires it. Most renters get their deposit back shortly after the trip wraps up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Iona, FL?
Iona is a perfect launchpad for a family RV trip Iona because so much of South Florida is within a half-day's drive. Top picks: Sanibel and Captiva Islands (15 minutes over the causeway, world-famous shelling beaches), Everglades National Park's Gulf Coast entrance at Everglades City (about 70 miles south, airboats and gator country), Naples and Marco Island (25 to 50 minutes for upscale beach days), Key Largo and the Florida Keys (about 4 hours, snorkel John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park), and Myakka River State Park east of Sarasota (about 90 minutes, alligators and wild scrub). For a longer haul, Walt Disney World in Orlando is roughly 3 hours up I-75. Local insider tip: drive the Tamiami Trail (US-41) instead of I-75 to the Everglades, it's slower but you'll see wood storks, gators, and tiny Old Florida diners you'd otherwise miss.
