Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake Sarasota, FL

Myakka River State Park is the dominant outdoor draw, covering roughly 37,000 acres of prairie, hammock, pinelands, and wetlands along the Myakka River. Visitors ride guided airboat tours on Upper Myakka Lake, climb the Canopy Walkway and treetop tower, and watch alligators and wading birds from the Birdwalk boardwalk. Seven miles of paved road and dozens of miles of backcountry trails and dirt roads support cycling, hiking, and horseback use. West of Lake Sarasota, Siesta Key, Lido Key, and Longboat Key provide beach access, and downtown Sarasota adds the Ringling Museum, marina district, and restaurants. Paddlers can launch canoes and kayaks on the Myakka River, and anglers fish both the river and the coastal passes. Myakka State Forest, roughly an hour south near Englewood, offers primitive hike-in and paddle-in campsites for those seeking a more remote experience.

The Sarasota area has a humid subtropical climate with mild, mostly dry winters and hot, wet summers. Winter and early spring, roughly November through April, form the peak RV season. Snowbird traffic is heavy, private resort parks like Sun Outdoors Sarasota and Linger Lodge RV Resort and Restaurant fill months in advance, and Myakka River State Park sites often book out at the 11-month reservation window for Florida residents and 10-month window for non-residents. Summer brings heat, high humidity, and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms. August is the wettest month, and backcountry roads and trails in Myakka River State Park are frequently flooded. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk from August through October, and parks can close on short notice for tropical storm or hurricane warnings. Drought conditions periodically trigger burn bans in Sarasota County that prohibit open campfires at Myakka River State Park, with barbecue grills and pits under three feet in diameter still allowed for cooking. Check park alerts before arrival, since drinking water availability and boat ramp status can also be affected.

Private resort parks in the area are large, amenity-heavy, and heavily populated by seasonal residents in park models. Sun Outdoors Sarasota is a large Fruitville Road resort with pools, pickleball, a fishing lake, and on-site dining, with sites accommodating a range of rig sizes. Linger Lodge RV Resort and Restaurant features a riverside setting on the Braden River, an on-site restaurant, a pool, and shaded sites under live oaks and palms. At Myakka River State Park, expect a natural, low-key environment with alligators, wild pigs, and abundant birdlife around the campgrounds. Sites include picnic tables, ground grills, and hookups, and restrooms with hot showers are within a short walk. Cell service can be spotty in the backcountry, insects are heavy in warm months, and campers should bring their own drinking water when park advisories are in effect.
