Campgrounds and RV parks near Longboat Key, FL

Beaches dominate the itinerary. Public beach parking on Longboat Key is free but limited, with approximately 250 total spaces spread across 12 access points along Gulf of Mexico Drive; arrive early. Whitney Beach at the north end is known for shelling, and dolphins are commonly spotted from shore in the morning. Off-island, families head to Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, and to St. Armands Circle for shopping and dining. Myakka River State Park east of Sarasota offers wildlife drives, boardwalks, and paddling among alligators and wading birds. Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey has 15 miles of trails and sits on the Legacy Trail, a paved multi-use path linking Venice and Sarasota, with Lake Osprey, a freshwater swimming lake with a sandy beach.

The prime window runs November through April. Days are warm and mostly dry, humidity is low, and rainfall is at its annual minimum. This is snowbird season on the Gulf Coast, so RV parks fill early and many operate on multi-month reservations for seasonal residents. Book well in advance for anything between January and March. March and April bring the warmest spring weather before summer humidity arrives, and are popular with families on spring break. In May the weather is generally excellent for beach time, with fewer thunderstorms than in summer. Summer through early fall is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms most days and peak monthly rainfall in August. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and activity peaks from mid-August through mid-October. Recent hurricanes have caused major flooding and beach damage along this stretch of coast, so check the Town of Longboat Key for updates on beach access, dune restoration, and any lingering closures.

Expect a mainland base camp rather than an oceanfront site. Most nearby parks are set on canals, bays, or inland lots, with the Gulf beaches reached by a short drive. Sites at the coastal resorts tend to be paved and level but relatively compact, so measure carefully if traveling in a large rig or with slide-outs. Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, water, and sewer are standard, along with pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Many parks are 55-plus or have snowbird-heavy demographics in winter; family-oriented amenities are lighter than in destination resorts. Bring sun protection, insect repellent, and a plan for afternoon storms in summer. Dogs are not allowed on any Longboat Key beach, and the nearest dog-friendly beach is Brohard Beach Paw Park in Venice, about 30 minutes south.
