Campgrounds and RV parks near Old Miakka, FL

Most trip plans center on Myakka River State Park. Activities include paddling and boating on the Myakka River and Upper Myakka Lake, fishing, extensive hiking and biking, birding and wildlife viewing, and a canopy walkway and observation tower for elevated views. The Myakka Outpost, locally owned and operated since 1982, offers bike and canoe rentals, a café, souvenirs, and camping supplies. Wildlife is the main draw. Visitors can expect to see alligators, deer, wild turkeys, and hundreds of bird species. Guided flat-bottom boat tours on Upper Myakka Lake are a reliable option for families who want a closer look without hiking. At Lake Manatee State Park, freshwater fishing for largemouth bass, sunshine bass, bluegill, and catfish is available from boats or fishing docks, and boating, kayaking, and canoeing are popular, though boat motors are restricted to 20 horsepower or less. Sarasota beaches, Siesta Key, and downtown attractions are all within an easy drive.

The peak RV season in this corner of Florida runs from late fall through early spring. The best time of year to visit Sarasota is January to April and November to December, when the heat eases and wildlife is most active; summer is hot and humid with common afternoon thunderstorms. State-park sites at Myakka River and Lake Manatee book out early during this window, so reservations should be locked in well before travel. Summer brings heavy rainfall and occasional flooding. Florida gets a lot of rain in summer, and it is not uncommon to get multiple inches in a short time between June and the end of September; the river and lake do flood, and Big Flats Campground can be shut down because it is closest to the lake. Hurricane season overlaps this period and can force short-notice park closures. Dry conditions in late fall and winter sometimes trigger burn bans. During drought conditions, Sarasota County has issued burn bans in which no open flames including campfires are permitted at Myakka River State Park, though barbeque grills and pits under three feet in diameter may still be used for cooking. Check park alerts before packing firewood.

Inside Myakka River State Park, campgrounds vary. Palmetto Ridge has 42 gravel-pad sites with full hookups accommodating RVs up to 45 feet, while Big Flats and Old Prairie are more rustic with water and electric hookups only, suited for smaller rigs up to 30 to 35 feet; all sites include a fire ring and picnic table, restrooms with hot showers are within 40 yards of every site, laundry is in Old Prairie and Palmetto Ridge, and a dump station sits near Old Prairie. Sites in Old Prairie and Big Flats are dirt-based, while Palmetto Ridge sites are gravel except for four ADA paved sites. Common complaints are heavy mosquitoes in warm months, periodic amenity or boardwalk closures, and variable cell service. Lake Manatee State Park is quieter. The campground has 60 campsites scattered across two loops with generous spacing, water and electric hookups on every site, and accommodates RVs up to 65 feet, and the lake is a 10 to 15-minute walk from any campsite. Sun Outdoors Sarasota is a large full-service resort with pull-through and back-in RV sites, bathhouses, pools, and on-site recreation.
