Campgrounds near Osprey, Florida
Osprey sits on Florida's Gulf Coast in Sarasota County, along U.S. 41 (the Tamiami Trail) between Sarasota and Venice. The area is a practical base for RV travelers heading to Siesta Key, Nokomis Beach, and Casey Key, with quick access to Interstate 75 via State Road 681. Oscar Scherer State Park is located just off U.S. 41, two miles south of Osprey, and can be reached from I-75 by heading onto FL-681 for less than five miles to the park entrance.
Private RV parks handle most of the long-stay snowbird demand. Royal Palms Mobile Home Park, Sarasota Sunny South RV and MH Park, Royal Coachman RV Resort, and Palm and Pines Mobile and RV Park cluster along the U.S. 41 corridor and cater primarily to seasonal residents, while Sun Outdoors Sarasota offers a more resort-style option with shorter stays and family amenities.
Oscar Scherer is the largest public campground in the immediate area and fills quickly during peak season, so travelers who want a state-park experience should plan and reserve well in advance. Renters looking for full hookups, laundry, and pull-through convenience will find those features more consistently at the private parks.
Things to do near Osprey
Oscar Scherer State Park is the outdoor anchor. There are 11 trails at Oscar Scherer, adding up to more than 15 miles of hiking, with lengths ranging from short quarter-mile loops to hikes over 10 miles long. The park protects a thriving population of Florida scrub-jays, a threatened species found only in Florida, and South Creek flows through the park offering paddling opportunities alongside the multi-use trails for hiking and biking.
Off-park, the Legacy Trail runs through Osprey and connects Sarasota to Venice for road biking and walking. Nokomis Beach and Siesta Key are short drives west for Gulf swimming, shelling, and sunsets. Families can combine ranger-led programs at the state park with nearby attractions such as Historic Spanish Point and the shops and restaurants in Venice and downtown Sarasota.

The climate of Sarasota is subtropical, with very mild winters and hot, humid summers, during which there are quite frequent thunderstorms. Winter and early spring are the busiest RV months. Snowbirds fill the private parks from January through March, and Oscar Scherer campsites are typically booked out months in advance.
Mid-March to mid-April is considered a prime window to visit, and by May the weather is generally excellent for the beach, with fewer thunderstorms than in summer. Summer brings daily afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity, and mosquitoes, though beaches and paddling remain popular for those who tolerate the heat. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through October, so RV travelers should monitor forecasts and know evacuation routes for coastal Sarasota County.
Fall shoulder weeks in late October and November tend to be the sweet spot: storm risk drops, humidity eases, and prime-season crowds have not yet arrived.

How to book campgrounds near Osprey
For reservations at Oscar Scherer State Park, visit the Florida State Parks reservations website or call 800-326-3521 or TDD 888-433-0287. Sites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, and Oscar Scherer's winter dates are typically claimed the moment they open. Setting a reminder for the exact release date is essential for peak-season stays.
The park becomes very busy during peak months, so reservations are recommended, though spots may be available on short notice during the fall and winter.
Private parks such as Royal Coachman RV Resort and Sun Outdoors Sarasota accept direct online bookings and phone reservations through the operator websites, with seasonal minimum-stay rules common in winter.
What to expect on-site
Oscar Scherer State Park offers 104 fully equipped campsites with electric and water hookups for tents or RVs, with a maximum RV length of 36 feet. Six sites are pull-through and the rest are back-in, and all sites have 30 or 50-amp electric hookups as well as water hookups. Campers should note the unusual configuration, since water pedestals often sit across from electrical connections, so a longer hose helps.
Each of the five bathhouses in the family campground is equipped with restrooms and hot water showers, for registered campers only. There is no sewer hookup at individual sites, but a dump station is located near the campground exit.
Private parks along U.S. 41 generally offer full hookups, laundry, and pool access. Sites at 55-plus communities skew toward long-term residents, so families should confirm age policies before booking.

Message the host before booking if you want to confirm pet fees or any breed notes.

Yes, RV delivery in Osprey is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig down US-41. Filter listings by Delivery on the search page to see hosts offering this in the 34229 area. Pro tip: book a delivered travel trailer if you want the campground experience without the driving stress, then use your tow vehicle or rental car for day trips to Sarasota and Venice Beach.

Pro tip: Oscar Scherer fills up fast in winter, so book your site at floridastateparks.org up to 11 months ahead if you're a non-resident.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/oscar-scherer-state-parkWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Osprey?
The sweet spot for an Osprey RV trip is November through April, when daytime highs sit between 70°F and 82°F with low humidity and almost no rain, perfect Gulf Coast camping weather. January is the coolest month with highs around 68°F. Summer (June through September) brings 87°F to 90°F highs, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and the official Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 through November 30), so plan accordingly. Shoulder months like late October and early May are the smart-money picks: warm water for swimming Lake Osprey, fewer crowds at Oscar Scherer State Park, and lower nightly rates. Pro tip: February and March are the busiest snowbird months, so book your rig early for those dates.
weather.gov/tbw/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Osprey?
You'll be fine, and Osprey is actually one of the easier places in Florida for a first time renting an RV. Roads here are flat, well-marked, and US-41 (Tamiami Trail) is a wide, straightforward route. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, slide-outs, and the dashboard, plus they're a text away during your trip. If you'd rather not drive at all, many Osprey hosts deliver the RV and set it up for you. Pro tip: stick to a Class B campervan or a 24-foot Class C for your first trip, both handle like a large van and park easily at Oscar Scherer State Park's 36-foot max sites.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/driver-safetyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-75, a dead battery at Turtle Beach Campground, or a tow off the Legacy Trail access road is one phone call away. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for any RV-specific questions, like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, it speeds things up if you ever need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Osprey RV rental on an interstate or cross-border road trip?
Yes, an RV road trip from Osprey opens up the entire Southeast. Popular routes include north to St. Augustine (about 230 miles), west along the Panhandle to Pensacola (around 480 miles), or south down to Key West (roughly 340 miles via the Overseas Highway). Travel to Canada may be allowed on some bookings, so message the host directly from the listing to confirm before you book. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals, since insurance and protection coverage stop at the border. Pro tip: if you want a multi-state adventure, ask your host about extended-mileage packages, many are happy to customize for a longer route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Plan smart and you'll keep fuel costs reasonable on your Osprey RV trip. Class B campervans typically get 18-22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8-12 mpg, and larger Class A motorhomes are usually 6-10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, generally 10-14 mpg combined. Florida gas prices in the Sarasota area typically run a few cents above the national average, with stations along US-41 and at I-75 Exit 200 (Clark Road) being your most convenient fill-ups. Pro tip: for a week-long Gulf Coast loop in a 25-foot Class C, budget around $200-$300 in fuel, then splurge the savings on stone crab at the Old Salty Dog in Siesta Key.
fueleconomy.gov/How far in advance should I book a campground near Osprey?
For winter trips (December through April), book Oscar Scherer State Park as soon as your dates open, non-Florida residents can reserve 10 months ahead and Florida residents 11 months ahead through floridastateparks.org or 800-326-3521. Sites here sell out fast because it's the only state park campground in southern Sarasota County. Private parks like Sun N Fun, Pleasant Lake, and Encore Royal Coachman in Nokomis fill up 2-4 months ahead in peak season. For summer and fall, you can often grab a spot 2-3 weeks out. Pro tip: monitor the Oscar Scherer reservation calendar daily, cancellations happen constantly as winter itineraries shift.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/oscar-scherer-state-park/experiences-amenitiesWhat are local driving conditions like around Osprey?
Driving an RV around Osprey is refreshingly easy. The terrain is pancake-flat, US-41 (Tamiami Trail) and I-75 are the two main routes, and there are no mountain passes or tunnels to navigate. Watch for afternoon summer thunderstorms (typically June through September) that can drop heavy rain fast, just pull off and wait 20 minutes. Snowbird season (January through March) brings heavier traffic on US-41, so plan pickups and grocery runs for mid-morning. Low bridges aren't an issue on main routes, but avoid the narrow back lanes on Siesta Key with rigs over 25 feet. Pro tip: use the Laurel Road exit (193) off I-75 instead of Bee Ridge if you're heading to Osprey with a big rig, the turn radius is more RV-friendly.
fdot.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Osprey?
Campgrounds in the Osprey area are well equipped for a comfortable stay. Oscar Scherer State Park offers water and electric hookups, hot showers, a dump station near the campground exit, drinking water fill-up, picnic tables, fire rings, and laundry. Private resorts like Sun N Fun, Pleasant Lake, and Encore Royal Coachman add full sewer hookups, 50-amp service, pools, hot tubs, pickleball, and Wi-Fi. The nearest dump stations and freshwater fills outside the state park are at most full-hookup parks in Nokomis and Sarasota. Pro tip: bring a longer water hose to Oscar Scherer, since water pedestals sometimes sit across the site from the electrical hookup, an unusual layout but easy to manage with 50 feet of hose.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/oscar-scherer-state-park/experiences-amenitiesWhat's typically included inside an Osprey RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how move-in ready most RVs are. A typical campervan rental in Osprey or motorhome rental in Osprey on RVezy comes with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, real beds with linens (ask the host to confirm), roof-mounted air conditioning (essential in Florida), a furnace, a propane tank, and seatbelts for all passengers. Most also include a TV, and many have Wi-Fi boosters or solar. Generators are common on Class C and Class A rigs. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list and message the host if you need specifics like a bike rack, beach chairs, or a kayak rack for paddling South Creek.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for an RV rental in Osprey, FL?
Hosts in Osprey offer a variety of add-ons to make your trip easier: delivery and setup (huge for first-timers), generator use, kitchen kits, linens, camp chairs, bikes, kayaks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Each listing shows add-on prices up front so there are no surprises. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Osprey, Nokomis, or Sarasota, with a 30-60 minute orientation walkthrough. Many hosts offer delivery to Oscar Scherer State Park or Turtle Beach Campground for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage policies vary, daily allowances of 100-150 miles are typical, with optional unlimited mileage packages. Pro tip: bundle delivery, generator, and a kitchen kit into one quote when messaging the host to get the best combined rate.
visitflorida.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at checkout, and the funds are held safely until your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is also placed on your card before pickup, the exact amount is shown on the listing before you confirm. As long as you return the RV in the same condition you got it (and within the mileage and generator hours allowed), the deposit is released back to your card after the trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video of the RV at pickup and dropoff, this protects you, the host, and makes any deposit questions easy to resolve quickly.
