Campgrounds near Panacea, Florida
Panacea sits on Florida's Forgotten Coast in Wakulla County, about 30 miles south of Tallahassee along US-98. The town fronts Dickerson Bay and Ochlockonee Bay, with the Gulf of Mexico and the Apalachicola National Forest defining the surrounding landscape. RV travelers use Panacea as a base for saltwater fishing, paddling, and access to several state parks within a short drive.
The closest options for RV renters include Panacea RV Park and The Oaks RV Resort and Motel in town, plus Holiday Park and Campground nearby. Ochlockonee River State Park offers a public campground on the river a few miles west near Sopchoppy, and Wildwood Golf and RV Resort sits inland toward Crawfordville.
Sites in the area range from full-hookup private parks with laundry and Wi-Fi to state park loops with electric and water only. Rigs of most lengths can be accommodated at the private resorts, while Ochlockonee River State Park caps RV length at 40 feet and favors mid-size trailers and Class C motorhomes.
Things to do around Panacea
Fishing drives most trips. Inshore anglers target redfish, trout, and flounder in Ochlockonee Bay and Dickerson Bay, while offshore charters run for grouper and snapper out of nearby Shell Point and Panacea. Kayakers launch on the Ochlockonee River and the marsh creeks that feed the bay.
Day trips reach St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge to the east for birding and the historic lighthouse, and Bald Point State Park to the south for beach access. Wakulla Springs State Park, one of the largest freshwater springs in the world, is a short drive north and offers riverboat tours, swimming, and manatee viewing in cooler months.
Golfers can play at Wildwood, and families often plan a day at the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory in Panacea to see local marine life.

December - February
64° / 48°F 100 mmMild and dry; peak snowbird season on the coast
Late fall through early spring is the prime RV window on this stretch of the Gulf. Daytime highs are comfortable, humidity drops, and biting insects ease off. Snowbird traffic picks up from January through March, and private parks in the area often see repeat monthly guests during that stretch.
Spring brings warming water, strong inshore fishing, and busy weekends. Wildflowers bloom in the Apalachicola National Forest, and paddling conditions on the Ochlockonee River are typically good before summer storms build.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms nearly every day from June through August. This is also Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks from mid-August through October and can force campground closures on short notice along the coast. Fall offers a payoff for travelers who wait out storm season: cooler nights, migrating birds through St. Marks refuge, and lighter crowds at the state parks.
Booking a campsite near Panacea
Ochlockonee River State Park uses the Florida State Parks reservation system, which opens sites up to 11 months in advance. Winter weekends and holidays fill quickly, so booking as early as possible is recommended for travelers targeting January through March. The park has 30 wooded sites with 50-amp electric and water hookups and a dump station on site.
Private parks including Panacea RV Park, The Oaks RV Resort and Motel, Holiday Park and Campground, and Wildwood Golf and RV Resort typically take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Monthly stays are common in winter, and many parks require deposits for extended stays.
Before booking, confirm rig length limits, slide-out clearance, and whether the site has 30-amp or 50-amp service. Pet policies and age limits on RVs vary by park.
What to expect on the ground
Panacea is a small coastal community, not a resort town. Expect a handful of seafood restaurants, a grocery run into Crawfordville or Tallahassee for larger stocking-up trips, and quiet nights outside of holiday weekends. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and thinner in the surrounding forest and marsh.
Bring bug spray. No-see-ums and mosquitoes are active near the water from spring through fall, especially at dusk. Sun exposure is intense on the water, and afternoon storms can move in quickly during summer.
Roads into private parks and state park loops are generally paved or hard-packed, but some sites are sandy and shaded by pines and live oaks. Low-hanging branches are common, so drivers of taller Class A rigs should scout before backing in.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Panacea, FL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Panacea, FL?
An RV rental in Panacea is one of the most affordable ways to experience Florida's Forgotten Coast. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $140 per night, campervans and Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes can run $250 to $400 per night. You'll get the best value by booking shoulder seasons (February to April, October to early December) when snowbird rates ease and the Gulf weather is gorgeous. Pro tip: look for the Instant Book filter on RVezy and message hosts about weekly discounts. A cheap RV rental in Panacea is very doable if you stay flexible on RV type and trip dates.
visitflorida.com/places-to-go/northwest/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Panacea, Florida?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Panacea. Florida specifically exempts personal-use recreational vehicles from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements under Florida Statute 322.53, even for big Class A motorhomes. The standard Florida Class E license (or your equivalent home-state or international license) covers any motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer you'll find on RVezy. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and you'll verify your ID right inside the RVezy platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're set for your Panacea RV trip.
flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/general-information/What protection is included when I rent an RV in Panacea?
Every booking on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit Coastal Highway 98 with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV and gives you real peace of mind while you travel the Forgotten Coast. During checkout, you choose from several protection tiers depending on how much coverage you want, so the level of protection is your call, not the host's. If you're a first-time renter exploring Panacea, the Apalachicola National Forest, or St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, that built-in safety net makes a huge difference for your RV rental in Panacea.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Panacea RV trip plans change?
You're not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policies (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund shortly after booking. Beyond that grace period, refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. Since Panacea sits right on Apalachee Bay during Atlantic hurricane season (June through November), it's reassuring to know RVezy support can help if a named storm threatens your travel dates. Review the full cancellation details on RVezy's Help Center so you know exactly what applies to your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Panacea?
Absolutely, Panacea is wonderfully dog-friendly and many hosts on RVezy welcome pets. Just turn on the Pet-Friendly filter when browsing and you'll see every pet-friendly RV rental in Panacea in one click. Once you arrive, your pup will love places like Mashes Sands Beach (leashed dogs allowed on this quiet Apalachee Bay stretch), the trails at Ochlockonee River State Park, and the easy walking paths around Bottoms Road. Ochlockonee River State Park requires leashes at all times and that you clean up after your pet. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and breed or size limits so check-in is smooth.
floridastateparks.org/learn/pets-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Panacea?
Yes, RV delivery in Panacea is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will deliver the RV right to your campsite at Panacea RV Park, Holiday Campground on Ochlockonee Bay, or Ochlockonee River State Park, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no white-knuckle driving through unfamiliar coastal roads. Just use the Delivery filter when searching, and check each listing for the host's delivery radius and fee (typically a flat rate plus per-mile charge beyond a set distance). It's the easiest way to turn a motorhome rental in Panacea into a true vacation.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/ochlockonee-river-state-park/experiences-amenitiesHow far can I travel on a Panacea RV trip?
Plenty far, and Panacea is a fantastic launch pad. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per night) with additional miles available for a small per-mile fee, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. From Panacea, you can reach St. George Island State Park in about 1 hour 30 minutes, Wakulla Springs State Park in 30 minutes, Apalachicola in just over an hour, St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in 25 minutes, and Pensacola Beach in about 4 hours. If you're planning a longer RV road trip from Panacea toward Destin or even the Florida Keys, just message the host to discuss a higher mileage package.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Panacea%2C%20FloridaWhere are the best campgrounds near Panacea, FL?
Panacea is surrounded by some of the most scenic camping in the Florida Panhandle. Top picks include Holiday Campground on Ochlockonee Bay (waterfront sites with full hookups and big-rig friendly access), Ochlockonee River State Park in nearby Sopchoppy (sites with 50-amp electric and water hookups, hot showers, and a dump station), and Coastline RV Resort on the bay. For a more rustic vibe, Tate's Hell State Forest has primitive campgrounds spread across 200,000+ acres of public land. RV camping in Panacea is genuinely uncrowded compared to South Florida, which is half the magic.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/ochlockonee-river-state-parkWhen is the best time of year to visit Panacea in an RV?
The sweet spot for an RV trip to Panacea is mid-October through late April. Daytime highs cruise comfortably between 65F and 78F, humidity drops, mosquitoes back off, and it's outside Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 to November 30). January is the coolest month with highs around 62F and lows in the mid-40s, so you'll still want a heated RV. Summer (June to September) brings tropical heat with highs near 90F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Spring shoulder season (March and April) is arguably the best for fishing, paddling the Ochlockonee River, and catching the Panacea Blue Crab Festival held over Labor Day weekend.
weather.gov/tae/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Panacea beginner-friendly?
Panacea is one of the easiest places in Florida to be a first-time RV renter. The roads are flat, traffic is light, and Highway 98 along the coast is straight and forgiving compared to anything you'd hit in Miami or Orlando. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, slide-outs, the generator, and dump procedures, so you're never left guessing. You can also message your host any time during the trip and lean on 24/7 roadside assistance. Pro tip: pick a Class B campervan or smaller Class C for your first trip, or book delivery and let the host park the RV at Panacea RV Park for you.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance for things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, so a hiccup on US-319 or Coastal Highway 98 won't derail your trip. Your host is also just a message away in the RVezy app if you have questions about appliances, slide-outs, or hookups. If something more serious comes up, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip to help. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save the host's number plus the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway, you'll feel ready for anything.
fhp.flhsmv.gov/Can I take my Panacea RV rental on a road trip across state lines?
Yes, interstate road trips are totally allowed on most RVezy rentals, and Panacea's location makes it an amazing launch point. Popular RV road trips from Panacea include heading west along the Forgotten Coast to Apalachicola (1 hour), continuing to Pensacola Beach (4 hours), crossing into Alabama for Gulf Shores (5 hours), or rolling east to St. Augustine (4 hours) and the Florida Keys (12 hours). Just confirm out-of-state travel with your host before booking. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Canada trips may be possible with host approval, but most renters keep the adventure within the US.
fdot.gov/agencyresources/mapsWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how do I budget for gas?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your Panacea RV trip budget, but it's easier to plan than people think. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A motorhomes typically run 7 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Florida gas prices generally hover near or slightly below the national average, and you'll find stations in Panacea, Crawfordville (15 minutes north), and Sopchoppy. Pro tip: fill up in Crawfordville before heading deeper into the Forgotten Coast, since stations get sparse between Panacea and Apalachicola. Budget roughly $0.30 to $0.50 per mile in fuel for a typical Class C and you'll be in good shape.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Panacea?
For an RV rental in Panacea, FL, lock in your campground reservation as early as possible, especially for waterfront sites. Florida State Parks (including Ochlockonee River State Park) open reservations up to 11 months in advance at FloridaStateParks.org or by calling 800-326-3521, and snowbird-season weekends (January through March) fill quickly. Panacea RV Park and Holiday Campground take reservations directly, and Tate's Hell State Forest sites are bookable through the Florida Forest Service. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday check-in) are much easier to score than Friday or Saturday, and the Blue Crab Festival weekend in early September books up months ahead, so plan early if that's your trip.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Panacea?
Driving an RV around Panacea is refreshingly low-stress. The main route, US-98 (Coastal Highway), is a flat, mostly two-lane road that hugs Apalachee Bay with sweeping water views. You'll cross the scenic Ochlockonee Bay Bridge just south of town, which is wide and easy in any size RV. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk, sudden afternoon thunderstorms in summer (pull over if rain gets heavy), and slow-moving fishing trucks. Tropical Storm and hurricane season runs June through November, so check the National Hurricane Center forecast before long drives. Avoid narrow forest roads in Tate's Hell State Forest unless you're in a smaller campervan, they can be sandy and rutted.
fl511.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Panacea?
Most campgrounds near Panacea are well-equipped for a comfortable RV trip. Panacea RV Park offers full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), cable TV, Wi-Fi, laundry, and a recreation room. Holiday Campground on Ochlockonee Bay has full hookups and is big-rig friendly. Ochlockonee River State Park offers 50-amp electric and water hookups at every site, a dump station, hot showers, and a comfort station (no sewer at individual sites). Bayside RV Resort & Marina has bayfront full-hookup sites. For dumping and freshwater fills between stops, you'll find dump stations at Ochlockonee River State Park and Newport Park. Pro tip: top off fresh water in town before heading to any primitive sites in Tate's Hell State Forest.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/ochlockonee-river-state-park/experiences-amenitiesWhat's typically inside an RV rental in Panacea?
Renting an RV in Panacea means stepping into a vacation home on wheels. Expect a full kitchen (fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 10 people depending on the rig, air conditioning (critical for Florida humidity), a furnace, and a hot water heater. Most listings include a TV, and many offer onboard Wi-Fi or cell boosters, generators for boondocking, and outdoor awnings perfect for Gulf sunsets. Class B campervans are smaller but still include kitchenettes and convertible beds. Every motorhome you drive includes seatbelts for all passengers (Florida law requires them). Check each RVezy listing's amenity list to match the rig to your family's needs.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/consumer-education/seat-belts/What add-ons and pickup options do RVezy hosts in Panacea offer?
Hosts in Panacea offer all kinds of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Common ones include linens and bedding packages, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, generators, propane tank fills, bikes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards (a must for the Ochlockonee River). Pickup is typically at the host's home in Panacea, Crawfordville, or Tallahassee (about 35 minutes north), but many hosts offer delivery directly to your campground. Mileage policies vary by listing, with daily allowances usually between 100 and 150 miles plus add-on packages if you need more. Pro tip: when you message a host before booking your campervan rental in Panacea, ask about discounted weekly rates and bundled add-ons, many will package them for a better deal.
visitflorida.com/places-to-go/northwest/wakulla/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking (no cash exchanged with the host), and your trip total is processed according to RVezy's payment schedule. A refundable security deposit is also placed on your card before pickup, which protects the host against possible damage and is released back to you after a smooth return. Deposit amounts vary by RV but are clearly shown on each listing before you book. To avoid any issues: do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, snap photos of the interior and exterior, return the RV with fuel and waste tanks per the host's instructions, and stay under your mileage allowance (or pre-purchase extra). Easy, transparent, and totally cashless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksLocal insider tip: what's the one thing every Panacea RV visitor should know?
Here's the local secret: Panacea is the gateway to the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab, a working sea life lab right in town where you can touch horseshoe crabs, sea stars, and baby sharks for just a few bucks (kids love it). Pair that with a sunset oyster basket at Posey's Steam Room down the road, an early morning paddle on the Ochlockonee River where white squirrels and bald eagles are common sightings, and a stop at Wakulla Springs State Park (30 minutes north) for a glass-bottom boat tour of the world's deepest freshwater spring. Then come back to your RV at Panacea RV Park for a quiet night under genuinely dark, star-filled skies, this is one of the least light-polluted stretches of Florida coast.
