Campgrounds and RV parks near Plantation, FL

The Myakka River is the defining feature. Paddlers launch canoes and kayaks from Camp Venice Retreat and Ramblers Rest RV Campground directly into the river, and Myakka River State Park offers guided tours on Upper Myakka Lake with regular alligator, wading bird, and wild turkey sightings. Venice Beach and Caspersen Beach are within roughly ten miles and are well known for shark tooth hunting in the surf. The paved Legacy Trail runs north from Venice toward Sarasota for cycling and inline skating. Inside Myakka River State Park, families can walk the canopy walkway, drive the main park road, or hike the backcountry loop trails. Snook Haven, a rustic riverside restaurant next to Camp Venice Retreat, hosts live music on weekends.

Winter and early spring are peak season. From December through March, daytime highs typically sit in the mid 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is comfortable, and snowbirds fill the private resorts for weekly and monthly stays. Sites at Ramblers Rest RV Campground, Royal Coachman RV Resort, and Myakka River RV Resort book months ahead for this window, and Myakka River State Park campsites are often snapped up soon after the 11-month reservation window opens. Late spring brings warmer temperatures and thinning crowds. May through early June is a shoulder period with better availability and hot afternoons. Summer is Florida's wet season and coincides with Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November. Afternoon thunderstorms are the norm from June through September, and low-lying trails in Myakka River State Park can flood. Fall is transitional: October and November cool off and dry out, with November typically the driest month. Burn bans occasionally restrict campfires in Sarasota County during drought stretches, so check park alerts before arrival.

Most private parks in the area are large, quiet, and skew older, with a strong seasonal-resident presence from December through March. Expect paved or gravel sites, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, a heated pool, and social activities like shuffleboard and bingo during the winter. Big rigs are generally accommodated, though some interior roads at Ramblers Rest RV Campground are narrow and tight to navigate. At Myakka River State Park, developed sites include water and electric, with sewer available only in the Palmetto Ridge loop. Hot showers, a dump station, and laundry facilities are on site. Alligators are common on and near the Myakka River, so keep kids and pets away from the banks. Summer brings mosquitoes and afternoon lightning, and sandy or grassy sites can hold water for a day or two after heavy rain.
