Campgrounds near Richmond Heights, Florida

Richmond Heights sits in southern Miami-Dade County, roughly 15 miles south of downtown Miami and within an easy drive of two national parks: Everglades to the west and Biscayne to the southeast. The area functions as a practical base for RV travelers heading to the Florida Keys, Homestead, and the agricultural Redland district, with the Florida Turnpike and US-1 both close by. Private RV parks cluster to the south and southwest, in the Redland and Homestead corridor. Miami Everglades RV Resort sits on 34 acres among avocado, mango and palm trees, with Everglades National Park less than 10 miles away and Key Largo about 30 miles to the south. Other nearby options include The Boardwalk, Southern Comfort RV Resort, Florida Park Miami, and Goldcoaster RV Resort, all positioned for quick access to the parks, beaches, and Miami-area attractions. Public camping is anchored by Everglades National Park's drive-in sites at Long Pine Key and Flamingo Campground, plus Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park, a Miami-Dade County campground next to Zoo Miami.

Things to do near Richmond Heights

Zoo Miami and the surrounding county parkland sit within minutes of Richmond Heights, making the area convenient for families traveling with kids. Everglades National Park is the headline attraction to the west, with airboat operators, the Anhinga Trail, and ranger-led programs at the main Homestead entrance. Biscayne National Park, stretching southeast of Miami toward the Keys, is largely underwater, protecting coral reefs, mangrove shorelines, and islands reachable primarily by boat. Closer to town, the Redland farm belt offers fruit stands, tropical nurseries, and wineries. Miami Beach, Coral Gables, and the South Beach Art Deco District are a short highway trip north, and Key Largo and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park lie roughly 30 miles south for snorkeling and glass-bottom boat trips.

Peak RV season; book snowbird sites months out

South Florida runs on a dry-wet cycle rather than the four seasons familiar to most RV travelers. Prime camping season runs between November and April, when humidity is lower, mosquitoes are more manageable, and rain is uncommon. This is the peak booking window: private resorts near Homestead fill with snowbirds on monthly stays, and national park sites go quickly on winter weekends. Summer brings heat, humidity, and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms. The Everglades rainy season officially runs from mid-May through mid-October, and Flamingo Campground sees very little summer demand as heat and mosquitoes make camping there uncomfortable. Private resorts stay open, but expect afternoon downpours and heavy mosquito pressure closer to the Everglades. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk from mid-August through late September; travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm park status before arriving. Shoulder months, late April, early May, and early November, can be a good compromise: warm days, thinner crowds, and easier reservations, though rainfall increases sharply through May.

I recently had the pleasure of renting Mark and Cyndi's RV for a two-week vacation across Florida, and I cannot recommend them enough! The entire process, from the initial inquiry to returning the RV, was seamless, professional, and friendly. Here's what made my experience exceptional: Communication: Mark and Cyndi were prompt, clear, and informative in their communication. They made sure I knew everything I needed to before embarking on my adventure and were readily available to answer any questions I had during my trip. The RV: Their RV was in pristine condition and exceptionally clean. It was evident that they take great pride in maintaining their vehicle. The RV was spacious, comfortable, and equipped with all the essential amenities, making my vacation feel like a true "home away from home." Orientation and Support: Upon pickup, Mark and Cyndi provided a thorough orientation of the RV, ensuring I was comfortable with all its features and operations. They also provided a comprehensive guidebook and videos, which were extremely helpful during the trip. Additionally, they were always just a phone call away whenever I needed assistance or had questions.

How to book campgrounds in the area

Private parks such as Miami Everglades RV Resort, The Boardwalk, Southern Comfort RV Resort, Florida Park Miami, and Goldcoaster RV Resort are booked directly through the resort websites or by phone. Winter is the busy season, so reserving several months ahead is standard practice for full-hookup sites. At Miami Everglades RV Resort, reservations between April 15 and September 15 are capped at a maximum stay of 14 days per site. National park camping uses a different system. Flamingo and Long Pine Key campground reservations are handled by Flamingo Adventures, the park's concessionaire, either online or by phone, and can typically be made up to a year in advance, which is especially recommended for winter holidays. Wilderness backcountry sites, including chickees, beaches, and ground sites, must be reserved through Recreation.gov.

What to expect on the ground

Sites in the Homestead and Redland corridor are typically level, paved or gravel pads with full hookups, cable, and Wi-Fi. Paved RV sites commonly offer 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups, grills and picnic tables, with air-conditioned restroom buildings, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Pools, clubhouses, and planned activities are common at the larger resorts, though many organized programs run only during the winter season. National park sites are more basic. The T Loop at Flamingo Campground has RV sites with electrical hookups on 41 of its pads, but water and sewer are not at each site, and two shared dump stations serve the campground. Bring bug spray year-round, especially near the Everglades, and expect alligators and wading birds close to campground perimeters. Cell service is generally reliable in the Richmond Heights and Homestead corridor and weaker deep inside Everglades National Park. Groceries, propane, and RV supply stores are concentrated along US-1 and the Florida Turnpike exits.
