Campgrounds near Richmond West
Richmond West sits in southwest Miami-Dade County, within a short drive of Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and the Florida Keys. The area works well as an RV base for families combining South Florida beaches, airboat tours, and national park day trips without staying in downtown Miami traffic.
Private RV parks dominate the immediate area. Miami Everglades RV Resort and The Boardwalk sit closest to Richmond West and cater to snowbirds with full hookups and paved sites. Southern Comfort RV Resort and Goldcoaster RV Resort lie a bit farther south toward Homestead and Florida City, positioning renters near the main Everglades entrance. Florida Park Miami rounds out the private options in the corridor.
Inside Everglades National Park, Long Pine Key and Flamingo campgrounds provide the closest public options. Both are reached via the Homestead park entrance and offer a very different experience from the manicured private resorts: fewer amenities, no electric hookups at Long Pine Key, and direct access to trails and paddling routes.
Things to do near Richmond West
Everglades National Park is the headline attraction. Families can walk the Anhinga Trail for close-up alligator and wading bird views, take a tram tour at Shark Valley, or paddle mangrove creeks near Flamingo. Airboat concessions operate along the Tamiami Trail north of the park boundary.
Biscayne National Park, east of Homestead, is largely water-based. Boat tours, snorkeling trips, and glass-bottom excursions run from Convoy Point. The Florida Keys start roughly an hour south, with Key Largo and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park within easy day-trip range.
Closer to Richmond West, Zoo Miami, the Deering Estate on Biscayne Bay, and Fruit and Spice Park in the Redland agricultural area offer half-day options that work well for a break from long drives.

South Florida has two seasons that matter for RV planning: dry and wet. The dry season runs roughly November through April, with lower humidity, fewer mosquitoes, and reliably sunny days. This is peak season for the Everglades and for private RV resorts around Richmond West. Snowbird sites fill months ahead, and Long Pine Key inside the park operates only during this window, typically opening in November and closing in May.
Spring brings warming temperatures and the start of higher humidity. Late April through May is a shoulder period with thinner crowds but rising bug pressure in the wetlands.
The wet season, June through October, is hot, humid, and stormy. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily, mosquitoes are intense in the Everglades, and this window overlaps Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks August through October. Some park facilities scale back or close, while Flamingo remains open year-round with reduced services during the wet months.

I recently had the pleasure of renting Mark and Cyndi's RV for a two-week vacation across Florida, and I cannot recommend them enough! The entire process, from the initial inquiry to returning the RV, was seamless, professional, and friendly. Here's what made my experience exceptional: Communication: Mark and Cyndi were prompt, clear, and informative in their communication. The RV: Their RV was in pristine condition and exceptionally clean. It was evident that they take great pride in maintaining their vehicle. Orientation and Support: Upon pickup, Mark and Cyndi provided a thorough orientation of the RV, ensuring I was comfortable with all its features and operations. They also provided a comprehensive guidebook and videos, which were extremely helpful during the trip. Additionally, they were always just a phone call away whenever I needed assistance or had questions.

How to book campgrounds near Richmond West
Everglades National Park frontcountry sites at Flamingo and Long Pine Key are reserved through Flamingo Adventures, the park concessioner, rather than Recreation.gov. Book as early as possible for dry-season weekends, since December through March fills quickly. Long Pine Key operates only from November through May, while Flamingo is open year-round.
Wilderness backcountry sites in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness, including chickees, beach sites, and ground sites, are booked through Recreation.gov on a rolling advance-reservation basis. Check the current permit window and any seasonal closures before planning a trip.
Private resorts including Miami Everglades RV Resort, The Boardwalk, Southern Comfort RV Resort, Goldcoaster RV Resort, and Florida Park Miami handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Winter monthly stays should be locked in during the previous summer.
What to expect
Private RV resorts in the Richmond West and Homestead corridor tend toward level paved or gravel pads, full hookups, pools, and 55-plus or family sections depending on the park. Expect suburban surroundings rather than wilderness immersion, and a heavy snowbird presence from January through March.
Inside Everglades National Park, amenities are basic. Long Pine Key offers potable water, flush toilets, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups at any site. Flamingo has frontcountry facilities including bathhouses and a dump station, plus a limited number of electric sites. Generator hours apply.
Wildlife is genuinely close in the park: alligators along canals, wading birds at every pullout, and mosquitoes that can be brutal outside the dry season. Bring insect repellent, screened shelter for meals, and enough fresh water. Cell service is spotty south of Homestead, and fuel stops thin out approaching Flamingo.

nps.gov/ever/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Richmond West, FL?
The sweet spot for a Richmond West RV trip is November through April, when daytime temperatures sit in the 70s, humidity drops, mosquitoes ease up, and Everglades wildlife viewing peaks as water levels recede. This is also Florida's dry season, which means easier setups and better stargazing in Big Cypress. May through October is hot (highs in the upper 80s to low 90s), humid, and brings afternoon thunderstorms plus Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 to November 30. For a smart-money move, book in late October or early May for shoulder-season rates, great weather, and fewer crowds in the parks.
weather.gov/mfl/I'm first time renting an RV. How do I know what to do?
You're in great hands, because first time renting an RV in Richmond West is easier than you think. Most first-timers in Miami choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer for the easiest learning curve. Start with a short shakedown trip to Larry and Penny Thompson or Miami Everglades before tackling a longer drive to the Keys.

Yes, an RV road trip from Richmond West can cross state lines, and many guests head up the East Coast through Georgia and the Carolinas or out along the Gulf Coast. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed but depends on the host and protection coverage, so message the host before booking to confirm. One important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Richmond West include Miami to Savannah (about 500 miles), Miami to New Orleans (about 870 miles), and the full Florida loop through Tampa, Orlando, and St. Augustine.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip from Richmond West?
Budgeting fuel for your Richmond West RV trip is straightforward once you know the numbers. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class A coaches 6 to 8 MPG, campervans 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG combined). Florida gas prices generally run a bit below the US average. A round trip to Flamingo (about 100 miles) might cost $40 to $60 in fuel for a Class C, while a Key West round trip (320 miles) runs $130 to $190. Fill up at Costco in Kendall or Pinecrest Wawa for the best prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds for my Richmond West RV trip?
Book early to lock in the best campsites near Richmond West. For peak winter and spring (December through April), reserve Flamingo Campground and Long Pine Key inside Everglades National Park well in advance through Recreation.gov. Florida State Parks like John Pennekamp in Key Largo and Bahia Honda accept reservations up to 11 months ahead at FloridaStateParks.org, and popular sites often book the same day they open for holiday weekends. Set a calendar reminder for 11 months before your trip start date to catch opening day.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234217What are driving conditions like for an RV in and around Richmond West?
Driving an RV around Richmond West is straightforward once you know the area. The Florida Turnpike, US-1, and Krome Avenue (SR-997) are all RV-friendly with wide lanes and easy exits. South Miami-Dade is flat with no mountain passes, which makes it ideal for first-timers. Watch for low clearances under I-95 overpasses in downtown Miami (some dip below 12 feet), avoid driving through South Beach and Brickell, and plan for sudden afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Rush hour on US-1 and the Palmetto Expressway gets heavy from 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 7 PM. Heading to the Keys? The Overseas Highway is gorgeous but two-lane in many stretches.

Flamingo Campground in Everglades National Park offers a dump station and potable water filling stations next to it, with 30/50-amp electric pedestals at the powered sites. visitflorida.com/things-to-do/outdoors-nature/How do payments and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Richmond West?
Paying for your RV rental in Richmond West is simple and secure through the RVezy platform. You pay the rental cost (plus protection plan, fees, and any add-ons) by credit card during booking, and RVezy holds the payment until after pickup so the host isn't paid before you're safely on the road. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before the trip and released after return, assuming no damages or missing items. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos and a quick walk-around video at pickup and return, follow the host's fuel and mileage rules, and send any concerns through the app for a clear record.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle South Florida heat and hurricane season in my RV rental?
Heat and humidity are part of the Richmond West RV experience from May through October, but a few smart moves keep you comfortable. Choose listings with upgraded or dual-zone air conditioning, plug into 50-amp shore power whenever possible (Flamingo and most private parks offer this), drive in the cooler morning hours, park in shade when you can, and keep plenty of water and electrolytes on hand. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so monitor the National Hurricane Center forecast and keep travel dates flexible. RVezy's cancellation policy is set by RVezy (not by hosts), so book with confidence and let the shoulder seasons (April and November) be your secret weapon.
