Campgrounds and RV parks near Rio, FL

Water access defines the area. The Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River offer fishing, kayaking, and boat launches, and Hutchinson Island beaches, including Stuart Beach and Bathtub Beach, are within a short drive. Inland, Savannas Preserve State Park protects a strip of freshwater marsh and pine flatwoods between Fort Pierce and Jensen Beach, with trails for hiking, biking, and paddling. Jonathan Dickinson State Park, south in Hobe Sound, offers paved and off-road biking, equestrian, and hiking trails, plus boating, canoeing, and kayaking along the Loxahatchee River. Ranger-guided tours of the 1930s pioneer homestead of Trapper Nelson are available year-round. Families can pair beach days with the Elliott Museum near Stuart Beach, downtown Stuart shopping and dining, and the Oxbow Eco-Center along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River.

The Treasure Coast has two clear seasons for RV travel: a dry, mild winter and a hot, wet summer. November through April is peak season, when daytime highs are comfortable, humidity is lower, and coastal RV resorts fill with snowbirds. Sites at Ocean Breeze Resort, Nettles Island Resort and RV Park, and Port St Lucie RV Resort can book months out for winter stays, and many properties enforce minimum-stay requirements during high season. Summer, from June through September, is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The wettest month is August, and the rainy season falls during August and September, bringing heavy precipitation. Atlantic hurricane season runs from early summer into late fall, with the highest risk in August and September, so RV renters should watch tropical forecasts and confirm cancellation policies. Spring and fall shoulder months balance thinner crowds with generally workable weather, though October rainfall can still be heavy. Wildlife viewing at Savannas Preserve and Jonathan Dickinson is strongest in the cooler months when temperatures moderate and biting insects ease.

Most parks near Rio are paved or gravel with full hookups, 30 and 50-amp service, and accommodate big rigs. Ocean Breeze Resort and Nettles Island Resort are gated and lean toward a resort-community feel, with pools and organized activities. Some properties skew 55-plus, so families should confirm age policies before booking. Sites on Hutchinson Island and along the Indian River are close-set and can feel tight for larger rigs with slides, and the coastal environment means salt air, mosquitoes after rain, and occasional standing water in summer. Cell service is generally strong across the area. Groceries, fuel, laundry, and marine supplies are easy to reach in Jensen Beach, Stuart, and Port St. Lucie. Bring insect repellent, sun protection, and a plan for shaded outdoor time in summer, since afternoon storms build quickly along the coast.
