Campgrounds near Sanibel, Florida
Sanibel is a barrier island on Florida's Gulf Coast, connected to Fort Myers by the Sanibel Causeway. The island receives roughly 940 mm of precipitation annually and is known for shell-strewn beaches, the JN 'Ding' Darling National Wildlife Refuge, and a paved bike-path network that reaches most of the island. On-island RV camping is very limited: Periwinkle Way Trailer Park sits along the main Periwinkle Way corridor within a short ride of the beach and is the practical on-island option for smaller rigs.
Most RV travelers base themselves just across the causeway in Fort Myers, then drive or bike onto Sanibel for the day. San Carlos RV Park And Islands, Siesta Bay RV Resort, McGregor RV Park, and Ebb Tide RV Park all fall into this off-island cluster and typically offer full hookups, laundry, and paved pads suited to larger rigs.
Although some RV camping is available on Sanibel itself, RVers will find a wider selection of full-hookup parks with Wi-Fi in the Fort Myers and Cape Coral area, which widens options for families booking on short notice.
Things to do near Sanibel
Shelling is the signature activity: the island's east-west orientation funnels shells onto its Gulf beaches, and Bowman's Beach, Tarpon Bay Beach, and Lighthouse Beach are the most popular access points. Bike rentals are widely available, and the flat paved path network connects most beaches, restaurants, and the wildlife refuge without needing to move the RV.
The JN 'Ding' Darling National Wildlife Refuge is the main nature draw, preserving one of the largest intact mangrove ecosystems in the country. Visitors can drive or cycle the Wildlife Drive, walk short trails at the Bailey Tract, and paddle mangrove creeks with Tarpon Bay Explorers, which runs kayak, paddleboard, and pontoon tours inside the refuge. Off-island, families often add the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers and day trips to Captiva or Cayo Costa State Park by boat.

Sanibel has two clear travel seasons. Winter and early spring, roughly December through April, are the dry, mild months and also the busiest. Snowbirds fill Fort Myers-area RV parks for weeks or months at a time, so sites can be committed well before the calendar year begins. Book early and expect minimum-stay rules at many parks.
Late spring and summer bring heat, humidity, and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms. August is typically the wettest month, averaging around 247 mm of precipitation over roughly 25 rainy days. Shelling is often best after summer storms, but midday heat is intense and biting insects appear in the mangroves.
Fall overlaps with peak Atlantic hurricane season, and southwest Florida remains an active landfall zone. Travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories and keep reservations flexible. Some refuge facilities and beach accesses have been rebuilt in stages following recent hurricanes, so it is worth checking current conditions with the refuge and the City of Sanibel before arrival.

This was my 1st time renting an RV. Cathy and Jose were fantastic to work with. From explaining the overall process to an “orientation meeting”, they were so helpful. Weather and traffic delayed my return by a couple of hours. Communication remained open and all was fine. Excellent vehicle and even better support where needed. We’ll definitely keep Cathy and Jose in mind for our next adventure 😉

My experience with Jose and his wife was amazing. They were very attentive and proactive with my needs. The RV was outstanding and we fell in love with not only the RV but the overall experience.

How to book campgrounds near Sanibel
Private RV parks around Sanibel and Fort Myers each run their own reservation systems, typically online forms or direct phone booking, with a deposit required to hold a site. Many of the older independent parks ask guests to call or email to confirm availability before submitting a reservation and mailing a deposit.
For winter stays at Periwinkle Way Trailer Park, Siesta Bay RV Resort, San Carlos RV Park And Islands, McGregor RV Park, or Ebb Tide RV Park, plan six to twelve months ahead and ask about monthly rates and 55-plus policies. Nearby Florida state parks such as Koreshan and Cayo Costa book through the Florida State Parks reservation system on an eleven-month rolling window, and popular winter dates are typically claimed the moment they open.
What to expect
Sites in this area lean toward tightly spaced, paved or crushed-shell pads with full hookups, palm shade, and community amenities like pools, laundry, and clubhouses. Many parks skew toward long-term winter residents, so expect a quieter, adult-oriented atmosphere rather than a resort-style kids' program. Larger Class A rigs fit at most Fort Myers parks; check length limits before booking a smaller in-town lot.
Driving onto Sanibel requires crossing the Sanibel Causeway toll bridge, and the island has narrow roads and posted vehicle restrictions. Many RV travelers park the rig at their campground and drive a tow vehicle or bike onto the island. The bike-path network remains the easiest way to move between beaches and the refuge, though tree canopy is thinner along some stretches after recent hurricane damage.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Sanibel, FL
How much does an RV rental in Sanibel typically cost?
RV rental in Sanibel is one of the most affordable ways to enjoy this barrier island, especially compared to beachfront hotels along Periwinkle Way. On RVezy, travel trailers near Sanibel and Fort Myers generally start around $95 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches can run $300 or more. Shoulder season (late April through early November) is when prices drop because demand cools after snowbird season. To save more, filter for Instant Book listings, look for hosts offering weekly discounts, and consider basing yourself in Fort Myers or Cape Coral where cheap RV rental Sanibel options are plentiful.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sanibel%2C%20FloridaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Sanibel, Florida?
Good news for first-timers: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sanibel. Florida does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes and travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. You will need to be at least 25 years old, hold a valid driver's license from your home state or country, and verify your ID through the RVezy platform during booking. International visitors should bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from their home auto club before flying into Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). No special test, no extra paperwork, just a smooth start to your Sanibel RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Sanibel?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can cruise the Sanibel Causeway and explore J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge with peace of mind. You choose your protection level during checkout (from basic to premium), and the plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle along with liability coverage. Combined with 24/7 roadside help for situations like flat tires on McGregor Boulevard or a dead battery at Bowman's Beach parking, it is the safety net that makes saying yes to your first motorhome rental in Sanibel easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Sanibel RV booking?
You can book your Sanibel trip with confidence. RVezy sets a clear, traveler-friendly cancellation policy on every reservation, and cancellation terms depend on how far out from your trip start date you cancel. Hosts do not set their own cancellation policies and the policy is managed entirely by RVezy. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will help rebook a comparable RV or provide a refund or travel credit. For the most current details and exact refund windows, visit the RVezy Help Center before you book your rent an RV in Sanibel adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Sanibel RV trip?
Absolutely, and Sanibel is one of the most dog-friendly beach towns in Florida. To find a pet-friendly RV rental Sanibel travelers love, use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host to confirm any pet fees. Sanibel allows leashed dogs on most public beaches (a rarity in Florida) including Bowman's Beach, Tarpon Bay Beach, and Lighthouse Beach Park, as long as they are on a leash no longer than 8 feet. Pups are also welcome at Causeway Islands Park and along Sanibel's Shared Use Path. Pro tip: bring a towel and a freshwater rinse jug, because the shell-strewn sand sticks to wet paws.
mysanibel.com/departments/recreationCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house in Sanibel?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts in the Fort Myers and Sanibel area offer RV delivery Sanibel travelers rely on, dropping the rig directly at Periwinkle Park & Campground, a Captiva vacation rental driveway (where permitted), or your campsite at nearby Koreshan State Park. The host handles setup including leveling, hookups to power and water, and a full walkthrough of the systems, so you never have to back a 30-foot motorhome across the Sanibel Causeway yourself. Filter for "Delivery" on RVezy and check the host's delivery radius and fee. Delivery is a great option if it is your first time renting an RV, because you skip the driving stress entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sanibel%2C%20FloridaHow do mileage policies work for a Sanibel RV rental?
Mileage is simpler than you might think. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with additional miles available at a per-mile rate, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an upgrade. For a typical Sanibel RV trip you usually will not need much: Sanibel Island itself is about 12 miles long, Fort Myers Beach is roughly 20 minutes away, and Naples is around a 45-mile drive south. If you are planning a wider Florida loop (Everglades, Keys, or Orlando), filter for hosts with unlimited or higher-mileage packages. The exact allowance shows on every listing before you book, so there are no surprises.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sanibel%2C%20FloridaWhere can I camp with my RV near Sanibel?
You have some great options for RV camping Sanibel visitors love. Periwinkle Park & Campground is the only campground on Sanibel Island, with full hookup sites within walking and biking distance of the beach (campfires are not permitted). Just off-island, Fort Myers/Pine Island KOA in St. James City offers full hookups and a pool, Koreshan State Park in Estero blends RV sites with historic pioneer settlement trails, and San Carlos RV Resort & Marina at Fort Myers Beach puts you minutes from the Gulf. For the best campgrounds near Sanibel, book Periwinkle 6 to 9 months ahead during winter, it is the most coveted spot on the island.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-parkWhen is the best time to take an RV trip to Sanibel?
Sanibel is a year-round destination, but the sweet spot is November through April, when daytime highs sit between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, humidity drops, and shelling is at its best after winter storms. Peak season (January through March) brings ideal weather but also snowbird crowds and the highest prices. May and October are smart shoulder months: warm Gulf water, lighter traffic on the Sanibel Causeway, and lower rental rates. Summer (June through September) is hot (highs near 90 with humidity) and falls in Florida's hurricane season, but it is when you will find the cheapest RV rental Sanibel deals and emptier beaches. Insider tip: come the day after a cold front passes for the best shell hauls at Bowman's Beach.
weather.gov/tbw/I've never driven an RV before. Is Sanibel a good place to start?
It is a great place for first-timers, especially if you let the host deliver and set up. If you are driving yourself, the route to Sanibel is straightforward: I-75 to Daniels Parkway or Colonial Boulevard, then west on McGregor Boulevard to the Sanibel Causeway. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through propane, slide-outs, water hookups, dump procedures, and driving tips before you leave the driveway. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. Pro tip: on Sanibel itself the speed limit is 35 mph or less island-wide, traffic moves slowly, and most travel is short hops between beach access points, so it is about the gentlest first RV drive environment you will find in Florida.
mysanibel.com/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat tire on the Sanibel Causeway, a dead battery at Lighthouse Beach Park, or a propane issue at Periwinkle Park, help is one phone call away. Your host is also a direct line for quick questions about the specific rig (how to reset the converter, where the spare fuse box is, and so on), and most hosts respond within minutes. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after every trip. Save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the pickup driveway, and you will cruise Sanibel knowing every "what if" is already covered.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat road trips can I take from Sanibel in an RV?
Sanibel is a fantastic launchpad for an RV road trip from Sanibel into some of Florida's most iconic destinations. Naples and the Tamiami Trail are about 45 miles south (roughly an hour). Everglades National Park's Shark Valley entrance sits roughly 110 miles southeast, perfect for a 2-hour drive and an alligator-spotting tram tour. Key West is a scenic 250-mile drive down the Overseas Highway, around 5 hours of ocean views. Heading north, Sarasota and Siesta Key Beach are about 90 miles away, and Orlando's theme parks are roughly 175 miles. Heads up: travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, and cross-border trips into Canada depend on the host and insurance, so message the host first if that is on your itinerary.
nps.gov/ever/index.htmWhat should I budget for fuel during my Sanibel RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it is easy to plan for. Most Class C motorhomes in Florida average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, travel trailers towed by a pickup get 10 to 14 mpg, and Class B campervans can hit 16 to 20 mpg. Regular gas in the Fort Myers and Sanibel area typically runs around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon. For a 5-day Sanibel RV trip with light driving (under 200 miles total), most renters spend $60 to $120 on fuel. Pro tip: fill up on the mainland before crossing the Sanibel Causeway, because the single gas station on-island typically runs noticeably higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Sanibel?
Earlier is always better in Southwest Florida. For winter and early spring (December through April), book Periwinkle Park & Campground 6 to 9 months ahead. They take reservations directly through their website or by phone, and on-island sites sell out fast. Koreshan State Park in Estero books through the Florida State Parks reservation system and opens reservations 11 months in advance, which is when you should grab dry-season weekends. Fort Myers/Pine Island KOA and other private parks book through their own sites and tend to fill 2 to 4 months out for peak season. For summer and fall (May through October), you can often snag spots just a few weeks ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the 11-month state-park window, it is how locals score the best sites.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like on Sanibel and the Causeway?
Driving to and around Sanibel is easier than most first-timers expect. The Sanibel Causeway is a roughly 3-mile crossing with a high-rise bridge offering ample vertical clearance, so any standard motorhome or travel trailer fits with room to spare. The toll is paid only when entering Sanibel (leaving is free) and you can pay with a SunPass, LeeWay, or E-ZPass transponder, or by pay-by-plate billing. Speed limits on Sanibel max out at 35 mph, and the island has very few traffic lights, just a relaxed flow along Periwinkle Way and Sanibel-Captiva Road. Watch for cyclists at Shared Use Path crossings and gopher tortoises near the shoulder. June through November can bring afternoon thunderstorms, so try to drive in the morning.
leegov.com/leewayWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Sanibel?
You will find solid amenities at the best campgrounds near Sanibel. Periwinkle Park & Campground offers full hookup sites (30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer), laundry, hot showers, and a beloved on-site aviary, though campfires are not permitted and Wi-Fi can be limited. Koreshan State Park has electric and water hookups plus a dump station and access to the Estero River. Most Lee County RV resorts include pools, Wi-Fi, and full hookups. For dump and water fills off-site, several mainland truck stops along US-41 offer dumping. Pro tip: top off your freshwater tank on the mainland before crossing the Causeway, as on-island water spigots can be slow during peak season.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-parkWhat features and amenities come with a typical Sanibel RV rental?
You will be well-equipped. Most RVs listed on RVezy in the Sanibel and Fort Myers area come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning (critical in Florida), a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and sofa sleepers, a TV, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many also include outdoor awnings, beach chairs, a propane grill, and a generator for off-grid stops. A campervan rental Sanibel travelers love often adds bike racks and kayak mounts (perfect for Tarpon Bay). Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a hotspot, others ask you to bring your own. Check the listing's amenities tab for the full inventory and message the host if you need anything specific like a pack-and-play or extra linens.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sanibel%2C%20FloridaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Sanibel RV rental?
You can customize your trip in many ways. Common add-ons offered by RVezy hosts in the Sanibel area include delivery and setup (with fees that scale by distance from Fort Myers), beach gear packages (chairs, umbrellas, coolers), bikes and kayaks (great for the Ding Darling Refuge Wildlife Drive), generators, linens and kitchen kits, and outdoor grills. Pickup is typically at the host's home or a designated meeting spot in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, or Estero, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies, pet fees, and generator-hour limits all vary by listing and show clearly on each page. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a bike package, you will get to your campsite stress-free and have wheels for Sanibel's extensive shared-use path system right away.
fws.gov/refuge/jn-ding-darlingHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay the full rental cost (plus taxes, fees, and any add-ons) through RVezy's platform at the time of booking using a credit or debit card. Your security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is placed as a pre-authorization hold on your card before pickup, typically ranging from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and it is released back to you after a smooth return. To avoid any hiccups, do a thorough walkthrough with your host at pickup (take photos and video of any existing wear), follow the mileage and generator-hour limits, and return the rig clean with tanks emptied as the listing specifies.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksSanibel sits in hurricane country. How do I handle weather risk on an RV trip?
Good question, and the answer is reassuring. Sanibel's hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak risk in August and September, but the area has excellent early-warning systems and most named storms are tracked 5 to 7 days in advance, plenty of time to adjust plans. RVezy's cancellation policy includes provisions for major weather events and mandatory evacuation orders, so reach out to RVezy support if Lee County issues an evacuation for your travel dates. Always check the National Hurricane Center forecast and the Lee County Emergency Management page before and during your trip, sign up for AlertLee text alerts, and know that the Sanibel Causeway can close in high winds. Booking in winter or early spring sidesteps the issue entirely, and that is also when Sanibel is at its most beautiful.
