Camping near South Miami Heights
South Miami Heights sits in southern Miami-Dade County, positioned between the urban core of Miami to the north and the wetlands of Everglades National Park to the west. The location works well for RV travelers who want to combine city day trips with access to two national parks and the upper Florida Keys, all reachable within about an hour's drive.
Private RV resorts dominate the immediate area. Miami Everglades RV Resort operates on avocado and mango groves west of the city, while Goldcoaster RV Resort and Southern Comfort RV Resort cluster in Homestead and Florida City to the south. The Boardwalk and Florida Park Miami round out the nearby options, all within a short drive of US-1 and the Florida Turnpike.
Most sites in the region are pull-through with full hookups suited to big rigs, and pools, laundry, and pet-friendly policies are common. The area serves as a practical base for reaching Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and Key Largo without repositioning.
Things to do near South Miami Heights
Everglades National Park is the primary draw. The Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center sits southwest of Homestead and opens access to the main park road, Anhinga Trail, and Flamingo at the park's southern tip, where saltwater fishing, kayaking, and ranger programs are offered. Biscayne National Park, largely underwater, is reachable via the Dante Fascell Visitor Center for boat tours, snorkeling, and reef trips.
Closer to camp, families visit Zoo Miami, Monkey Jungle, and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Miami Beach, the South Beach Art Deco district, and Bayside Marketplace are roughly 30 miles north. Key Largo, the start of the Florida Keys, sits about the same distance south, making a day trip to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park feasible.

South Florida has two seasons that matter for RV planning: the dry season from roughly November through April and the wet season from May through October. Winter and early spring bring warm days, low humidity, and minimal mosquitoes, which is why private RV resorts fill up with snowbirds and campgrounds fill on weekends during peak winter season from December through April.
Summer flips the pattern. Heat, humidity, daily thunderstorms, and heavy mosquito pressure keep crowds thin, and many wilderness services in the Everglades scale back. Long Pine Key Campground is open seasonally November through May and is closed during the wet months.
Hurricane season runs June through November and peaks in August and September. Storm activity can force park closures and evacuations of coastal campgrounds with little notice, so travelers in late summer and early fall should track National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm site status before arrival.

I recently had the pleasure of renting Mark and Cyndi's RV for a two-week vacation across Florida, and I cannot recommend them enough! The entire process, from the initial inquiry to returning the RV, was seamless, professional, and friendly. The RV: Their RV was in pristine condition and exceptionally clean. It was evident that they take great pride in maintaining their vehicle. How to book a campsite
Private resorts near South Miami Heights, including Miami Everglades RV Resort, Goldcoaster RV Resort, Southern Comfort RV Resort, The Boardwalk, and Florida Park Miami, take reservations directly through their own websites or through third-party platforms such as Campspot and RoverPass. For winter stays, booking several months out is standard because these parks draw long-term snowbird traffic.
Inside Everglades National Park, frontcountry Flamingo and Long Pine Key campgrounds are reserved through Flamingo Adventures, an authorized park concessioner, rather than Recreation.gov. Wilderness backcountry permits are booked online through Recreation.gov year-round, with reservations opening daily at 10:00 a.m. ET, 90 days before the trip start date on a rolling basis.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat terrain, subtropical vegetation, and a mix of RV resorts, manufactured-home communities, and national-park campgrounds. Many private parks near Homestead and Florida City combine long-term residents with transient RV sites, so ambiance leans residential rather than remote. Pull-throughs, 30/50-amp service, full hookups, heated pools, and laundry are widely available.
Inside Everglades National Park, full hookups are not available at the park campgrounds, though partial hookups can be found, so many RVers rely on batteries, solar, or generators within posted quiet hours. Cell coverage weakens quickly once past the park entrance.
Bring insect repellent year-round, sun protection, and shade planning for summer. Alligators, wading birds, and the occasional Burmese python are part of the landscape near the Everglades; standard wildlife precautions apply, and food should be secured at all sites.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in South Miami Heights, FL?

Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, campervans average $125 to $200, and larger Class A or Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300 per night. Pricing depends on the season, the rig, and how far in advance you book. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Miami%20Heights%2C%20FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in South Miami Heights?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in South Miami Heights. Florida does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal recreational vehicles, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy, from campervans to large Class A motorhomes. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pair an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association with your home license and you're road-ready.

Every RV rental in South Miami Heights booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your booking. The protection plan covers eligible physical damage to the RV during your trip, so a stray palm frond on the windshield or a parking-lot scrape won't ruin your Florida adventure. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), letting you decide how much peace of mind you want for your motorhome rental in South Miami Heights. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully, the upgraded option is popular with first-timers heading into the Everglades or the Keys where you're farther from help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my South Miami Heights RV trip?
Life happens, and RVezy makes it low-risk to book. Every reservation is backed by the standard RVezy cancellation policy (not set by the host), which includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates without worry. The amount refundable beyond that grace window depends on how far out your trip start date is. You'll see your specific terms during checkout and in your booking confirmation. Pro tip: book early to secure the rig you love, then use the grace period to finalize plans with your travel crew.

Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in South Miami Heights is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs whose owners welcome four-legged travelers (sometimes for a small cleaning fee set by the host). Once you've booked, South Florida is a paradise for dog parents: Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park has shaded, leashed trails right next to Zoo Miami, and Matheson Hammock Park in nearby Coral Gables has space to stretch the legs near Biscayne Bay. Note that Everglades and Biscayne National Parks restrict pets on most trails, so plan beach days at dog-friendly Hobie Beach on Key Biscayne instead. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm your specific breed and size are a fit.
miamidade.gov/global/parks/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or rental address in South Miami Heights?
Yes, RV delivery in South Miami Heights is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many hosts will drive the rig directly to your campsite at Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park, Miami Everglades Resort, or a private address, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees are typically based on distance and the host sets the rate. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this service, then message them with your destination for a quote. It's the easiest way to skip the city driving and start your vacation relaxed.

For the best campgrounds near South Miami Heights inside a national park, Long Pine Key in the Everglades is seasonal with no hookups but unbeatable stargazing. Pro tip: book Larry and Penny Thompson well in advance through Miami-Dade Parks for peak winter dates.

Summer (June to September) brings 90F days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and overlaps with hurricane season (June 1 to November 30), though early mornings can still be lovely and rates drop significantly. Pro tip: January and February are often the most pleasant months, dry, breezy, and ideal for gator-spotting.
weather.gov/mfl/climateI've never rented an RV before, will I be okay in South Miami Heights?
You'll be more than okay. First time renting an RV in South Miami Heights is genuinely easy on RVezy. Every host gives you a personal walkthrough at pickup (or delivery), covering everything from leveling and slide-outs to the water system, propane, generator, and dump procedures. You can message your host before booking with any question, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. South Florida is also one of the friendliest places to learn: roads are flat, campgrounds like Larry and Penny Thompson have wide, pull-through sites, and you're rarely far from help. Pro tip: book a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in South Miami Heights for your first trip, they handle like a big van and park almost anywhere.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002386693-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in South Miami Heights booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. Your first call is to the roadside hotline (number provided in your trip confirmation), and they'll dispatch help to wherever you are, whether that's Card Sound Road heading to the Keys, Tamiami Trail crossing the Everglades, or a campsite at Miami Everglades Resort. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, hosts know their rigs inside out and can often troubleshoot quickly. Pro tip: snap a photo of the fuse panel and propane shutoff during your walkthrough, it speeds up any over-the-phone diagnosis.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106774-Roadside-assistanceCan I take my South Miami Heights RV rental to the Keys or out of state?
Yes, an RV road trip from South Miami Heights can cross state lines or head down US-1 to Key West, both are allowed on RVezy rentals as long as the host approves on the listing or in messages. The most popular routes are the Overseas Highway to Key Largo (about 1 hour), Marathon (about 2 hours), and Key West (about 3.5 hours), plus the Gulf Coast loop through Naples and Sanibel, or the long-haul up I-95 to Savannah and the Carolinas. One important rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance does not extend there. Pro tip: confirm Keys travel with your host upfront and double-check the height of your rig against any posted bridge clearances along the route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the realistic fuel budget for an RV trip from South Miami Heights?
Florida gas prices are typically close to the U.S. average, and Miami-Dade pumps usually track the statewide price. Expect a campervan to get roughly 18 to 22 MPG, a Class C motorhome to deliver 8 to 12 MPG, and a Class A to land around 7 to 10 MPG. A round trip from South Miami Heights to Key West (about 320 miles total) in a Class C will run roughly $90 to $130 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: fill up before heading into the Keys or Everglades, prices on the Overseas Highway and along US-41 are noticeably higher than at warehouse clubs in Kendall and Cutler Bay.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near South Miami Heights?
For winter trips (December through March), book South Florida campgrounds 4 to 6 months ahead, snowbird season fills up fast. Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park takes reservations through the Miami-Dade Parks reservation system. Everglades National Park campsites (Long Pine Key and Flamingo) are booked through Recreation.gov, with windows opening up to 6 months ahead, and Flamingo's waterfront sites can disappear within minutes. Private parks like Miami Everglades Resort and Goldcoaster book through their own websites. For summer or shoulder-season trips, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: set a Recreation.gov alert for cancellations, prime Flamingo sites open up regularly as snowbirds adjust plans.

US-1 (South Dixie Highway) and the Florida Turnpike are your main north-south arteries, and both handle RVs of every size with no clearance issues. Avoid downtown Miami, Miami Beach, and Brickell during weekday rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.), and skip narrow Ocean Drive entirely in a big rig. Summer brings sudden, intense thunderstorms (typically mid to late afternoon), and hurricane season (June to November) means watching the forecast. Pro tip: ask your host about the Turnpike's SunPass transponder, many include one, and pull off at a rest area if you hit a downpour, they pass quickly.

Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park has full-hookup sites plus a freshwater lake and dump station. Miami Everglades Resort and Goldcoaster RV Resort include pools, laundry, Wi-Fi, and on-site stores. Need to dump or fill water between bookings? Larry and Penny Thompson's dump station accepts non-campers for a small fee, and many Pilot/Flying J stops along the Turnpike have RV lanes with potable water and dump access. Pro tip: South Florida campgrounds often charge per-person rates above 2 guests, factor that in if you're traveling with a bigger family RV trip South Miami Heights crew.
miamidade.gov/global/parks/larry-penny-thompson-park.pageWhat's included inside RVs available in South Miami Heights?

Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class B/C/A motorhomes and trailers, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, roof AC (essential here), heat, and seatbelts for everyone traveling while in motion. Many hosts include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a hotspot, and cell coverage is strong across Miami-Dade and the Upper Keys. Pro tip: filter listings by sleeps count and bathroom type before booking, and message the host to confirm linens, dishes, and outdoor chairs are included so you can pack light.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Miami%20Heights%2C%20FloridaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect in South Miami Heights?
South Miami Heights hosts offer popular add-ons that make life easier: bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators, bikes, beach chairs, kayaks, portable grills, and even pre-stocked groceries. Pickup is usually at the host's home address (the platform reveals it after booking), with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Many hosts in the South Miami Heights, Cutler Bay, and Homestead area offer delivery to Larry and Penny Thompson Park, Miami Everglades Resort, or your hotel, often free within a set radius. Mileage policies typically range from 100 miles per day included to unlimited, so compare carefully. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you're heading to Long Pine Key or Flamingo in the Everglades, those sites have no shore power.
nps.gov/ever/planyourvisit/camping.htmHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in South Miami Heights is handled securely through the RVezy platform, no cash to the host. You'll pay the rental total through RVezy with a supported card, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, separate from the booking payment. As long as you return the RV in the same condition (clean, fueled, tanks emptied per host instructions), the hold is released after the trip ends. To avoid surprises, take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, including the odometer, generator hours, and tank levels. Pro tip: ask the host upfront about the dump and refuel policy so you don't get hit with avoidable cleaning fees.
