Campgrounds near South Sarasota
South Sarasota sits on Florida's Gulf Coast in Sarasota County, minutes from Siesta Key, Nokomis Beach, and the Legacy Trail. The area suits RV travelers looking to combine beach access with inland state-park nature, and it functions as a base for exploring the barrier islands, downtown Sarasota, and Venice to the south.
RV options near South Sarasota fall into two categories. Private RV resorts and mobile-home parks, including Sarasota Sunny South RV and MH Park, Royal Palms Mobile Home Park, Palm Terrace, Sarasota Lakes RV Resort, and Sun Outdoors Sarasota, cluster along the U.S. 41 corridor and offer full hookups, paved pads, and amenities aimed at snowbirds. State parks east and south of the city provide a more natural setting with river, prairie, and scrub habitats.
Myakka River State Park is one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks, encompassing over 37,000 acres of wetlands, dry prairies, hammocks, and pinelands along the Myakka River. Oscar Scherer State Park, roughly 1,400 acres of scrubby flatwoods near Osprey, is one of the best places in southwest Florida to view the threatened Florida scrub-jay, and the park hosts more than 200 bird species.
Things to do near South Sarasota
Water-based activity dominates the trip. Siesta Key and Nokomis Beach are within a short drive, and paddlers can put in on the Myakka River or on South Creek, a tidal blackwater stream that flows through Oscar Scherer. Bike and canoe rentals, a café, and camping supplies are available at the Myakka Outpost concession inside Myakka River State Park.
On land, Oscar Scherer offers over 15 miles of hiking trails and about 10 miles of biking trails, with the paved Legacy Trail running directly through the park between Venice and Sarasota. Wildlife viewing is a major draw: opportunities to see alligators, deer, wild turkeys, and hundreds of bird species are common inside Myakka, and the park's canopy walkway, suspended 25 feet above the ground, offers treetop views of the oak and palm hammock.

The Sarasota climate has a clear high and low season for RV travel. The period from November through April is the most inviting time to visit, with highs typically in the upper 60s to low 80s Fahrenheit and low humidity. This is snowbird season: private RV resorts along U.S. 41 book up months in advance, and state-park campsites at Myakka River and Oscar Scherer are difficult to secure without planning.
Summer is hot, humid, and wet. Afternoon thunderstorms break almost daily, sometimes with hail and gusts of wind, and August is typically the wettest month. Hurricane season runs from June through November, with peak activity from August through October. Some private parks reduce staffing in summer, and state parks occasionally close facilities for storm damage or drought-driven burn bans.
Spring and fall are transitional. From March through May and again from October into November, conditions are generally warm to hot and sunny, with less frequent rain. Late fall, after hurricane peak, is often a good value window before winter rates take over.

How to book campgrounds near South Sarasota
State parks use the Florida State Parks reservation system. Effective January 1, 2024, Florida residents may book campsites up to 11 months in advance, while non-residents are limited to a 10-month window. Reservations are made through the Florida State Parks reservations website or by calling 800-326-3521. For winter dates at Myakka River or Oscar Scherer, book the day the window opens, as sites often fill within minutes.
Myakka River State Park primitive backcountry sites are booked by calling the park ranger station directly at 941-361-6511, not through the online system. Myakka State Forest campsites are managed separately by the Florida Forest Service.
Private parks including Sarasota Sunny South RV and MH Park, Royal Palms Mobile Home Park, Palm Terrace, Sarasota Lakes RV Resort, and Sun Outdoors Sarasota book directly through their own websites or phone lines. Winter monthly and seasonal stays fill first, so contact parks well before the November-through-April window.
What to expect on arrival
Site types vary widely. Private resorts near U.S. 41 typically offer paved or concrete pads with full hookups, laundry, and pool access geared to long-stay snowbirds. State-park campgrounds are more rustic. Myakka River State Park has 90 sites in three loops, all with 20/30/50-amp electric and water, a fire ring, and a picnic table. Only Palmetto Ridge has sewer hookups and can accommodate rigs up to 45 feet on gravel pads. Big Flats and Old Prairie are older, dirt-based loops suited to smaller rigs, generally up to 30 to 35 feet.
At Oscar Scherer, the campground has 104 sites with water and electric but no sewer, a dump station, and a maximum RV length of 36 feet. Expect wildlife: alligators are common in freshwater areas, mosquitoes and no-see-ums pick up after summer rains, and drought-driven burn bans and storm closures are periodically posted for Sarasota County parks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near South Sarasota, FL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in South Sarasota?
RV rental in South Sarasota is competitive compared to hotel rates on Siesta Key during peak season. Travel trailers typically start around $95 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches run $250 to $400 nightly. Winter (January through March) is peak snowbird season, so booking early locks in better rates. For a cheap RV rental in South Sarasota, travel midweek, target the May to early November shoulder seasons, and filter for travel trailers with delivery included so you skip the fuel cost of driving a big rig. Bundling a host's weekly discount with a campground stay at Oscar Scherer State Park stretches your budget further.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Sarasota%2C%20FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in South Sarasota, Florida?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in South Sarasota. Florida does not require a special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for motorhomes or trailers available on RVezy, even big Class A coaches. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and ID confirmation happens right through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters are amazed how simple the paperwork is, leaving more time to plan your beach days on Siesta Key.

Every RV rental in South Sarasota booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Tamiami Trail with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level (not the host) during checkout, and the plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip. From a flat tire near Myakka River State Park to a windshield chip on I-75, you have backup. Take a few photos of the RV at pickup during your host walkthrough for your own records, then relax and enjoy the Gulf Coast.

RVezy has a built-in cancellation policy that makes booking your South Sarasota RV trip low-risk. There is a grace period right after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and additional refund tiers apply depending on how far out you are from your trip start date. Hosts do not set these rules, RVezy does, so the experience is consistent across every listing. Book the campervan or motorhome you love now, and if life shifts, you have flexibility. Visit the RVezy Help Center for the specific window that applies to your dates.

Yes, plenty of South Sarasota hosts welcome pets. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see motorhomes and travel trailers that allow your furry co-pilot. Once you're here, South Sarasota is a dog lover's dream: Brohard Paw Park in nearby Venice is one of the only beaches in the area where dogs can legally run off-leash on the sand, and Paw Park of Historic Venice has shaded play areas. Oscar Scherer State Park allows leashed dogs on most trails and in the campground. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any size limits or pet fees so check-in is smooth.
venicegov.com/government/parks-recreation/parks/brohard-paw-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental home in South Sarasota?
Yes, RV delivery in South Sarasota is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers. Many hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer right to your campground site, beach rental driveway, or even Siesta Key vacation home, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through everything before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, and check the listing for their delivery radius (most cover Siesta Key, Venice, Nokomis, and Osprey). It's the ultimate stress-free start to your Sarasota RV trip, no towing skills required.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/oscar-scherer-state-parkHow far can I drive on my South Sarasota RV rental?
Most South Sarasota hosts include a daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for road trip lovers, just filter for it on RVezy. From South Sarasota, popular drives stay well within range: Myakka River State Park is just 20 miles east, Fort De Soto Park is about 50 miles north, Sanibel Island and Fort Myers are roughly 75 miles south, and the Everglades sit around 150 miles southeast. If you're planning a longer loop, message the host to negotiate extra miles upfront. Locking it in before pickup is always cheaper than adding miles after the fact.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/myakka-river-state-parkWhere are the best campgrounds near South Sarasota?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in South Sarasota. Turtle Beach Campground on Siesta Key offers around 40 sites with full hookups and walking access to Turtle Beach. Myakka River State Park, 20 miles east, offers 90 RV sites near the famous Canopy Walkway. floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/oscar-scherer-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in South Sarasota?
South Sarasota is a true year-round RV destination, but the sweet spot is November through April, when daytime highs sit between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity drops to comfortable levels. This is also snowbird season, so book your motorhome rental in South Sarasota and your campground site early. May and October are the smart-money shoulder months, warm Gulf water, fewer crowds, and lower nightly rates. Summer (June to September) brings highs in the low 90s, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and Atlantic hurricane season, but mornings are gorgeous for beach time. Local insider tip: visit in late October for the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix without the peak-season price tag.
weather.gov/tbw/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in South Sarasota?
You'll do great, South Sarasota is one of the friendliest spots in Florida for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, showing you exactly how to use the generator, slide-outs, water systems, and dump connections. Many also offer delivery, so you don't even need to drive the RV. Local roads like US-41 (Tamiami Trail) and I-75 are flat, well-marked, and easy for big rigs once you're outside the Siesta Key bridges. If you have questions mid-trip, your host is a text away and RVezy's 24/7 support has your back. By day two, you'll feel like a pro.
fdot.gov/safety/safetyhome.shtmWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV during the trip?
You are never on your own. Every South Sarasota RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows. If something pops up at Turtle Beach Campground at 2 a.m., one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is typically a quick text away for questions about the RV's specific quirks, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway, then enjoy the Gulf sunset.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my South Sarasota RV rental out of state or across the border?
Yes, an RV road trip from South Sarasota into other states is absolutely on the table. Popular routes head north to St. Augustine and Savannah, west along the Gulf to New Orleans, or south to the Florida Keys (Key West is about 380 miles via the Overseas Highway). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host's listing and insurance, so message them directly to confirm before you book. One firm rule: travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection package doesn't extend there. For interstate trips, just confirm mileage limits with your host upfront and you're free to roam.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat's a realistic fuel budget for an RV trip from South Sarasota?
Plan smart and fuel won't bust your budget. Florida gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, hovering around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon for regular in the Sarasota area. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, and big Class A coaches sit around 7 to 10 MPG. For a 300-mile loop from South Sarasota out to Myakka River State Park and back through Venice, a Class C will burn roughly $80 to $100 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Wawa or RaceTrac stations just off I-75 exits, they're consistently cheaper than gas stations on Tamiami Trail.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near South Sarasota?
Book early and you will get the best sites. Florida State Park campgrounds at Oscar Scherer and Myakka River open reservations 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime winter weekends (December through March) fill the moment that window opens. Turtle Beach Campground on Siesta Key reserves through Sarasota County Parks up to a year ahead and is essentially booked solid for snowbird season. Private RV resorts like Sun Outdoors Sarasota typically need 3 to 6 months of lead time for peak season. For summer or shoulder-season trips, 4 to 6 weeks is usually plenty. Set a calendar reminder for exactly 11 months before your dates to snag the best state park sites.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around South Sarasota?
Driving an RV in South Sarasota is genuinely manageable. The main arteries (I-75, US-41/Tamiami Trail, and Clark Road) are flat, wide, and RV-friendly. The big thing to know: the Siesta Key bridges (Stickney Point and Siesta Drive) get jammed in peak season, so cross before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. Avoid downtown Sarasota's narrow streets with anything over 25 feet, and skip Lido Key in a big rig due to tight parking. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can drop visibility fast, so plan driving for mornings. Hurricane season runs June through November, but with a few days' notice, you'll have plenty of time to reroute or shelter if needed.
fdot.gov/traffic/What hookups and amenities will I find at South Sarasota campgrounds?
You'll find excellent facilities at South Sarasota campgrounds. Most private RV resorts (Sun Outdoors Sarasota, Sarasota Sunny South, Sarasota Lakes RV Resort) offer full hookups, including water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric, plus WiFi, pools, and laundry. State parks like Oscar Scherer and Myakka River provide water and electric at every site, with shared dump stations on the way out (Myakka has 5 full-hookup sites for big rigs). Turtle Beach Campground on Siesta Key offers full hookups with 50-amp power. Need to refill fresh water or dump mid-trip? Most county and state parks have free dump stations for registered campers. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot sewer hose and a water pressure regulator, they're cheap insurance against site quirks.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/myakka-river-state-parkWhat will be inside my South Sarasota motorhome rental?
Your motorhome rental in South Sarasota will arrive fully equipped for Gulf Coast living. Expect a real bed (queen or king in most Class C and Class A rigs), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating, and air conditioning, which you'll absolutely want for Florida humidity. Most rentals include a generator for off-grid power, seatbelts for everyone traveling, and a flat-screen TV. Many hosts add WiFi hotspots, outdoor chairs, and beach gear. Travel trailers offer similar interiors but need a tow vehicle (or host delivery). Check each listing's amenities list for specifics, and message the host if you need something like a pack-and-play or extra linens.
flhsmv.gov/motor-vehicles-tags-titles/recreational-vehicles/What add-ons can I get with my South Sarasota RV rental?
South Sarasota hosts offer some fantastic add-ons that make your trip smoother. Common options include delivery and setup (often $100 to $300 depending on distance), generator hours, bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor furniture, bikes, kayaks, and beach gear (great for Siesta Key days). Pickup is usually at the host's home base in the Sarasota area, and dropoff is the same location unless you've arranged delivery. Mileage policies vary by host, with most including 100 to 150 free miles per day and charging $0.30 to $0.50 per extra mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package and you can fly into Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) with just a carry-on.
srq-airport.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book a South Sarasota RV rental on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup and released back to you after a successful trip with no damage. To keep things smooth: do the walkthrough with your host at pickup, snap a few photos of the exterior and interior, and return the RV with fuel and propane levels matched to pickup. Easy in, easy out.
