Campgrounds near Southgate, Florida
Southgate is a suburban community just south of downtown Sarasota on Florida's Gulf Coast, roughly ten minutes from Siesta Key and less than half an hour from Venice. The area sits inside a dense cluster of RV parks, mobile-home communities, and two nearby state parks, giving renters a mix of private resort-style stays and public-land camping within a short drive.
Close-in private options include Palm Terrace, Sarasota Sunny South RV and MH Park, Sarasota Lakes RV Resort, and Royal Palms Mobile Home Park, which cluster along the US 41 and Bee Ridge corridors east of the city. For a full-amenity resort, Sun Outdoors Sarasota sits on the outskirts of downtown Sarasota with a pool, activities program, and mixed RV and cottage inventory.
For public-land camping, Myakka River State Park offers 90 campsites across three campgrounds, with the newer Palmetto Ridge loop providing full hookups and the older Big Flats and Old Prairie loops offering water and electric. Oscar Scherer State Park sits about 20 minutes south near Osprey with 104 sites along South Creek.
Things to do around Southgate
Beaches drive most trips. Siesta Key, Lido Key, and Nokomis Beach are all within a short drive, and the barrier islands are the main draw for families with an RV parked in the Sarasota area.
Inland, the Myakka River flows through one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks, with prairies, hammocks, pinelands, and wetlands. The park's canopy walkway, wildlife drives, and airboat tours on Upper Myakka Lake are popular with families. Oscar Scherer sits on the Legacy Trail, a paved rail-trail that runs north toward Sarasota and south to the historic Venice train depot, making it a strong pick for cycling families.
In town, the Ringling museum complex, downtown Sarasota, and St. Armands Circle add rainy-day and evening options within a fifteen-minute drive of most Southgate-area campgrounds.

Winter is peak season on Florida's Gulf Coast. Myakka River State Park and Oscar Scherer State Park both fill quickly during the winter months, and travelers are advised to book as soon as the 11-month reservation window opens, with peak demand running January through March. Private RV parks in the Sarasota area fill with snowbirds during the same window, and many enforce minimum stays.
Spring brings warm, drier weather and lighter crowds after Easter. From March to May the weather is generally warm and sunny, rains are less frequent than in summer, and by May daytime highs approach summer levels, though humidity remains lower.
Summer and early fall are the hottest and wettest months. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with peak activity typically from August to October. Rates ease and reservations are easier to get, but travelers should watch tropical forecasts and expect near-daily afternoon thunderstorms.

How to book campgrounds near Southgate
For the two nearest state parks, book through the Florida State Parks reservation system at reserve.floridastateparks.org or by phone at 1-800-326-3521. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and effective January 1, 2024, Florida residents have a 30-day head start to book campsites, reducing the reservation window for non-residents to 10 months in advance.
Private parks such as Palm Terrace, Sarasota Sunny South RV and MH Park, Sarasota Lakes RV Resort, Royal Palms Mobile Home Park, and Sun Outdoors Sarasota are booked directly through each park's website or phone line. For winter arrivals, contact private parks several months out; some are age-restricted and some require weekly or monthly minimums in season.
Cancellations occur throughout the peak season at the state parks, so monitor the reservation calendar carefully if initial searches come up empty.
What to expect on-site
Private parks in the immediate Southgate and Sarasota corridor typically offer paved or concrete pads, full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, pools, laundry, and clubhouses. Several are age-restricted or heavily 55-plus in winter, so confirm age policies and pet rules before booking.
At the state parks, expect a more natural setting. Oscar Scherer has 104 sites with water and electric hookups (no sewer at individual sites), hard sand pads with scattered gravel, dense vegetation between many sites, and a dump station near the campground exit. Maximum RV length is 36 feet, and some creekside sites do not accept pets due to alligator presence.
Cell coverage is generally good across the area, alligators are present in freshwater at both state parks, and mosquitoes and no-see-ums can be heavy near dusk in warmer months. Bring screens, repellent, and a plan for shade.
