Campgrounds near University Park
University Park sits in western Miami-Dade County, putting RV travelers within easy reach of Everglades National Park, Biscayne Bay, and the Atlantic beaches of Broward County. The area serves as a practical base for families splitting time between the city and the surrounding wetlands, with campground options ranging from full-hookup resorts to primitive sites inside a national preserve.
Miami Everglades RV Resort, roughly 30 miles south of downtown Miami, spans 34 acres of avocado, mango, and palm trees and offers more than 300 RV sites plus tent sites, cabins, and lodges. Hollywood KOA sits along the US-441 corridor between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, a compact urban campground built for beach and city access rather than seclusion. The Boardwalk and Florida Park Miami round out the local commercial options.
For a more remote experience, Mitchell Landing sits along Loop Road inside Big Cypress National Preserve, offering primitive sites for tents and self-contained RVs in the Stairstep backcountry unit. Reservation systems, amenities, and seasons vary widely across these choices, so trip planning matters.
Things to do near University Park
Everglades National Park is the headline attraction. Miami Everglades RV Resort places travelers less than 10 miles from the park, with the Anhinga Trail, Shark Valley tram road, and Flamingo boat tours all within a day's drive. Zoo Miami, Monkey Jungle, and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden are close by for family days.
From Hollywood KOA, the ArtsPark at Young Circle, the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, and Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino are short drives east. Hollywood Beach is roughly six miles from the campground.
Mitchell Landing gives direct access to the Loop Road scenic drive, the Florida National Scenic Trail 22 miles east, and the only airboat trails in Big Cypress National Preserve, provided the operator holds an off-road vehicle permit. Fishing, wildlife viewing, and stargazing under dark skies are the main draws.

South Florida runs on two seasons, dry and wet, not four. The dry season runs roughly from mid-October through mid-May and brings cooler nights, lower humidity, fewer mosquitoes, and clearer trails in the Everglades. This is peak booking season for every campground in the region, and sites at commercial parks like Miami Everglades RV Resort and Hollywood KOA often fill months in advance.
The rainy season officially begins May 15 and continues through mid-October. Daily afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity, and heavy mosquito pressure define the experience. Water levels rise across Big Cypress and the Everglades, and some backcountry access becomes impractical.
Mitchell Landing operates on a seasonal schedule, open August 15 through April 15, and can close during flooding events. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November with peak activity from August through October, and travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and campground closure notices. Winter snowbird demand pushes minimum stays and higher rates at private parks from January through March.

How to book campgrounds near University Park
Reservation systems differ by operator. Miami Everglades RV Resort, part of the Encore and Thousand Trails network, books directly through its own site or by phone, with stricter cancellation terms for January through March stays and a 14-day maximum stay from April 15 through September 15. Hollywood KOA books through KOA.com or the KOA app, with a 3 p.m. check-in and 11 a.m. check-out.
Mitchell Landing in Big Cypress National Preserve reserves through Recreation.gov, with a booking window of up to six months in advance. The January through April 15 peak carries a 10-day maximum stay, extending to 14 nights the rest of the operating season.
For winter travel, book commercial parks eight to twelve weeks out at minimum. National preserve sites can be scanned for cancellations closer to arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Commercial parks in the Miami and Hollywood area lean urban and compact. Hollywood KOA is small, with tight sites in a residential neighborhood just off the highway, and visitors regularly describe it as a convenience stop rather than a destination. Miami Everglades RV Resort offers a quieter setting under fruit trees, with a heated pool, hot tub, clubhouse, mini golf, and shuffleboard, though guests have reported occasional temporary closures of pool and bathhouse facilities. Sites at both parks sit close together, so travelers seeking privacy should adjust expectations.
Mitchell Landing is primitive. There are no hookups, no potable water, and only vault toilets. Cell coverage is limited, access is along a secondary gravel road, and the campground has picnic tables, fire rings, and shared food storage. Wildlife encounters with alligators are routine, and mosquitoes are relentless outside the dry season.
Bring insect repellent, sun protection, and extra fresh water for any preserve stay.

visitflorida.com/things-to-do/outdoors-nature/camping/What license do I need to rent an RV in University Park, Florida?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in University Park. Florida does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for recreational vehicles, even larger Class A motorhomes commonly listed on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally required to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. First time renting an RV? Your host will walk you through every system at pickup, so you'll never feel rushed or alone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my University Park RV rental?
Yes, and this is one of the biggest reasons guests feel confident booking an RV rental in University Park through RVezy. Every booking includes insurance coverage arranged through RVezy plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on the Florida Turnpike or need a tow near the Everglades, help is one phone call away. At checkout you choose a renter protection plan that fits your trip, with different coverage levels and deductibles available. The combination of insurance and a protection plan gives you real financial peace of mind so you can focus on enjoying South Florida.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my University Park RV booking?
Booking an RV rental in University Park is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy on every reservation (it isn't host-defined), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. If a hurricane, tropical storm, or other natural disaster impacts your trip, RVezy's support team works with you directly to find a fair solution, which is especially reassuring during South Florida's June-to-November storm season. Exact refund amounts depend on how far out you cancel, and the full timeline is available in the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Miami-area RVs and review your cancellation timeline in your RVezy dashboard.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from University Park?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in University Park is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of listings near Florida International University, Sweetwater, and Westchester whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you're rolling, your pup will love nearby spots like Tropical Park's off-leash dog area on Bird Road, Amelia Earhart Bark Park in Hialeah, and the dog-friendly trails at Oleta River State Park about 35 minutes northeast. Many South Florida campgrounds, including Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park near Zoo Miami, allow leashed pets on site. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size limits so check-in is smooth.
miamidade.gov/global/parks/home.pageCan the RV be delivered to me in University Park instead of picking it up?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in University Park and the surrounding Miami-Dade area, meaning your motorhome or travel trailer is brought directly to your campground, vacation rental, or even your driveway, fully set up and ready to use. This is especially popular for guests heading to Larry and Penny Thompson Park, Miami Everglades Resort in Homestead, or Markham Park in Sunrise, since the host handles all the towing, leveling, and hookups. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which owners deliver to your zip code (33174 and nearby) and check their per-mile rate. Pro tip: ask about a full setup package so you arrive to a turn-key campsite.
miamidade.gov/global/parks/camping.pageHow far can I drive from University Park, and what are the mileage policies?
You've got serious range from University Park. Each RVezy host sets their own daily mileage allowance, typically 100 to 200 free miles per day, with extra miles around $0.30 to $0.50 each, and some listings even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer road trips. From University Park, Key Largo is about 65 miles south on US-1, Everglades National Park's main entrance is 50 miles southwest, Naples is 110 miles west via Alligator Alley (I-75), and Orlando is roughly 235 miles north on the Turnpike. Filter by Unlimited Mileage on RVezy if you're planning a big loop, or message the host to negotiate a higher cap for multi-state adventures.
fdot.gov/agencyresources/mapsWhere are the best campgrounds near University Park, FL?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near University Park include Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park in Southwest Miami-Dade (about 25 minutes south, full hookups next to Zoo Miami), Miami Everglades Resort in Homestead (great for Everglades and Keys day trips), Goldcoaster RV Resort in Homestead (large gated park 40 miles south), and Markham Park in Sunrise (Broward County, 30 minutes north with a shooting range, mountain biking, and a target range). For a true Florida adventure, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo is about 80 minutes away and books up fast. Reserve Florida State Park sites at FloridaStateParks.org up to 11 months in advance, especially November through April.
floridastateparks.org/rv-campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from University Park?
South Florida is the rare US destination where RV camping in University Park is genuinely a year-round activity, but the sweet spot is mid-November through April. During those months, daytime highs sit in the comfortable 72 to 82 F range, humidity drops, mosquitoes thin out, and the Everglades come alive with wildlife as water levels recede. Summer (June through September) brings highs in the upper 80s to low 90s with afternoon thunderstorms and peak hurricane season, so most snowbirds skip it, which means better RVezy prices and wide-open campsites. Pro tip: aim for January or February for the perfect mix of cool weather, dry air, and access to events like the Miami International Boat Show.
weather.gov/mfl/climateI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay starting from University Park?
You'll do great, and most RVezy guests in University Park are first-timers. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the bathroom system, plus they're a text away during your trip. For your first day, the flat, straight roads from University Park out to the Everglades or down to Homestead are perfect practice (skip Miami Beach and Brickell on day one, those streets are tight). Choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer for an easier learning curve. Pro tip: book a one-night stay at Larry and Penny Thompson Park first to get comfortable with hookups before tackling a longer Florida RV trip.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in University Park comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with your RVezy renter protection plan, so if you have a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or mechanical issue anywhere from the Florida Keys to the Panhandle, one phone call gets help dispatched. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip to coordinate with your host and get you back on the road fast. Save the roadside number from your trip confirmation in your phone before you leave University Park. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around of tires and fluids each morning, especially before long stretches on Alligator Alley where service stations are sparse.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my University Park RV rental across state lines or to Canada?
Yes, road-tripping out of Florida is encouraged on most RVezy listings. An RV road trip from University Park up I-95 to Georgia, the Carolinas, and beyond is a classic route, and many hosts welcome multi-state journeys (always confirm via message before booking so mileage and protection terms are clear). Travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the host and your selected protection package, so ask upfront if that's your goal. One firm rule: travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Popular cross-state runs from University Park include the Florida Keys (3 hours), Tampa/St. Pete (4.5 hours), and Savannah, GA (6.5 hours).
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how should I budget for gas?
Budgeting fuel for your University Park RV trip is straightforward. Travel trailers don't burn gas themselves but will drop your tow vehicle's MPG to roughly 9 to 12. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches sit around 6 to 10 MPG. Florida gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, with stations along the Florida Turnpike, US-1, and SW 8th Street near University Park usually offering competitive rates. A weeklong 700-mile loop in a Class C around South Florida usually runs $250 to $400 in fuel. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app and fill up off the highway in Homestead or Florida City before heading into the Keys, where prices spike.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near University Park?
Book early and you'll have your pick. For Florida State Parks like John Pennekamp, Bahia Honda, and Long Key, reservations open exactly 11 months in advance at FloridaStateParks.org, and prime winter sites (December through March) often sell out within minutes of release. Miami-Dade County parks like Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park accept reservations through their official site about 6 months out and tend to fill on weekends and holidays. Private parks such as Miami Everglades Resort and Goldcoaster can usually be booked 2 to 4 weeks ahead outside peak snowbird season. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 11 months before your dream date if you're targeting a state park, and have a backup site ready in case it's gone.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around University Park?
Driving an RV near University Park is easier than most Miami metro areas because you're just west of the city, with quick access to the Florida Turnpike, SR-836 (Dolphin Expressway), and the Palmetto Expressway (SR-826). Stick to those freeways and US-27 heading west and you'll find wide lanes and straightforward routing. What to avoid in a big rig: Miami Beach side streets, downtown Brickell, and the low-clearance Rickenbacker Causeway tunnels. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can bring sudden heavy rain, so pull off if visibility drops. Hurricane season runs June through November, so check the National Hurricane Center forecast before any trip. Pro tip: time your departures to leave University Park before 7 a.m. or after 9:30 a.m. to dodge FIU and Turnpike rush-hour traffic.
fl511.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near University Park?
You'll find well-equipped campgrounds within an easy drive of University Park. Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer), hot showers, a swimming lagoon, and a dump station. Miami Everglades Resort and Goldcoaster RV Resort have full hookups, pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Florida State Parks like John Pennekamp typically provide water and 30/50 amp electric plus a central dump station, but not always sewer at each site. For potable water fills and dump stations on travel days, most Flying J and Pilot truck stops along the Turnpike between University Park and Orlando have RV lanes. Pro tip: bring a drinking-water hose (white, not green) and a 25-foot sewer hose to fit most South Florida sites comfortably.
floridastateparks.org/learn/camping-informationWhat's actually inside the RVs available in University Park?
South Florida listings come loaded for comfort. Most RV rentals in University Park include a fully equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes), a private bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the floor plan, roof-mounted air conditioning (essential here), a furnace, and a TV. Many newer Class C motorhomes and travel trailers add solar panels, onboard generators, outdoor speakers, and even outdoor kitchens, which is perfect for beach days. Seat belts in motorhomes vary by model, so confirm the count with your host if you're traveling with kids in car seats. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in campgrounds, so most travelers use a phone hotspot. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps and AC to match your group and Miami's heat.
flhsmv.gov/motor-vehicles-tags-titles/recreational-vehicles/What add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in University Park?
You can customize your trip in just a few clicks. Popular add-ons from University Park hosts include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30 per trip), bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), generators if not built-in ($25 to $50 per day), bike racks, kayaks and paddleboards, beach gear, and grills. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in Sweetwater, Westchester, Doral, or nearby, and many also offer delivery to your campground or vacation rental for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies typically range from 100 free miles per day to unlimited, and pet, generator, and Festival-Friendly options are filterable on RVezy. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a propane fill so you arrive to a ready-to-camp motorhome rental in University Park with zero hassle.
miamidade.gov/global/economy/transportation/home.pageHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You'll pay for your University Park RV rental through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, with all transactions handled on the platform, so you never wire money or pay the host directly. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after your trip if there's no damage or unusual cleaning needed. To avoid issues, take a quick video walkaround at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's mileage and generator rules, and return the RV with the agreed fuel and waste-tank status. Pro tip: keep all trip messages inside the RVezy app so everything is documented and your deposit is returned quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle South Florida's heat and hurricane season in an RV?
Easy, with a little planning. Every RV rental in University Park comes with rooftop air conditioning, but AC works best on shore power (a 30 or 50 amp campground hookup), so book full-hookup sites at places like Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park or Miami Everglades Resort in summer. Park in shade when possible, use reflective windshield covers, and run the AC during the cooler morning drive to pre-cool the cabin. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with peak risk in South Florida from August through October. Before any summer or fall trip, check the National Hurricane Center at nhc.noaa.gov and Florida 511. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (late October to early December, and April to May) give you warm beach weather with lower storm risk.
