Campgrounds and RV parks near Georgetown, ID

Bear Lake is the main draw. Families camp, sail, scuba dive, water ski, and swim from public beaches and lakeside campgrounds. North Beach offers day-use facilities including two boat ramps and a life jacket loaner station. East-shore beaches tend to be less crowded than the Utah side. Inland, Minnetonka Cave is a popular half-day trip. Located on the Cache National Forest in Idaho, it is one of the premier show caves in the United States, with limestone rock formations reached by traversing 888 stairs. The cave stays a brisk 40 degrees year round, so bring a jacket. The National Oregon Trail Center in Montpelier, forest-service hiking in St. Charles and Bloomington canyons, and cutthroat trout and whitefish fishing on Bear Lake round out the itinerary.

The core RV season runs late May through mid-September. Bear Lake water temperatures are warm enough for swimming in July and August, and most private parks operate May through October. Sites at Mountain Fawn Campground at Bear Lake State Park are available year round by reservation, though services are limited off-season. Potable water is shut off at Mountain Fawn when the park is not in full operation, so campers should bring their own water supply during those periods. Shoulder seasons trade weather risk for quieter sites. The state park campground tends to be much less crowded outside of peak weekends, making for a peaceful stay with room to spread out. Late spring can still bring snow at higher elevations, and forest roads leading to attractions like Minnetonka Cave may remain closed by snowpack into June. Winter here is cold and snowy. Valley elevations sit above 5,900 feet, so overnight lows well below freezing are routine from November through March, and most private campgrounds close for the season.

Expect high-desert mountain conditions: strong sun, low humidity, cool nights, and wind on the lake. Mountain Fawn Campground at Bear Lake State Park offers serviced sites with electric hookups along the lakeshore, each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, and a dump station serves RV campers with direct beach access. Shade is limited on the east shore, so awnings help. High-wind advisories in the Bear Lake Valley, Bear River Range, and Caribou Range can bring gusts up to 50 mph that make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Check forecasts before towing over Emigration Canyon or the passes north of town. Cell coverage is reliable in Montpelier and Georgetown and spotty on the forest roads. Fuel, groceries, and propane are easiest to source in Montpelier.
