Things to do near Ackley
Fishing, paddling, and hiking dominate the local mix. The Iowa River borders part of Pine Lake State Park and is known for channel catfish and smallmouth bass, while only electric trolling motors are allowed on the lake itself. Beeds Lake is a no-wake lake suited to fishing and non-motorized boating, with a boat ramp, fishing jetties and docks, a swimming beach, and a shoreline trail. Rock-n-Row Adventures Iowa River Tubing gives families a lazy float option in warm months.
On land, Union Grove State Park has scenic trails for hiking, and wildlife such as deer and turkey are commonly seen along the way. Wilder Park in Allison offers a large day-use footprint with fishing ponds, a dog park, disc golf, sand volleyball, playgrounds, and connections to the Rolling Prairie Trail.

The Pine Lake campground is closed each year from November 1 through March 31, and is 100 percent reservable, accepting reservations April 1 through October 31 until 10:00 pm CST the day of arrival. Union Grove and Beeds Lake follow similar seasonal patterns, with campgrounds generally closed through the winter and reopening in spring for the main season that runs into mid or late October.
Cabins are the outlier for shoulder-season and winter travelers. The cabins at Pine Lake can comfortably accommodate 4 people and feature stone fireplaces, living rooms, small kitchens, and bathrooms, and remain available outside the campground's open dates.
Summer weekends fill fastest at the lake parks. Spring and early fall offer cooler weather, fewer bugs, and better site availability, though water systems may still be shut down at the edges of the season.
How to book
Iowa state park campgrounds in this area are booked through the state's centralized reservation system on iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com. Advanced campsite and cabin reservations can be made through the online reservation system for Pine Lake State Park, and the campground is 100% reservable and a reservation is required. At Pine Lake, reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 3 months in advance.
Beeds Lake and Union Grove use the same portal and reservation window. Wilder Park is a county park with its own local booking process, and Rock-n-Row Adventures books tubing trips through the operator directly rather than the state park system.
What to expect on-site
Sites in the area are generally level to gently sloped with a mix of shade and open turf. Beeds Lake tends to run flatter and more open, with some clustered sites near the center suited to groups and more spread-out perimeter sites better for solo rigs. Iowa DNR campgrounds in this region typically offer electric or full-hookup sites, a modern shower house and restrooms, and a sanitary dump station.
Firewood rules matter here. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed across Iowa, and while firewood can be moved legally within the state, campers are urged not to transport firewood across state lines and to buy locally near the park and burn it all during their stay to limit the spread of pests.
