Camping near Alden, Iowa
Alden sits in Hardin County in north-central Iowa, along the Iowa River between Iowa Falls and Eldora. RV travelers use it as a base for two nearby state parks and a stretch of river popular for tubing and paddling. Most sites within a short drive are seasonal, opening in spring and closing in late fall.
The closest full-service state park is Beeds Lake State Park near Hampton, about a half-hour drive northwest, with a large campground on a 99-acre reservoir. Pine Lake State Park Campground sits southeast near Eldora, along the Iowa River, and is one of the oldest state parks in Iowa. Rock-n-Row Adventures Iowa River Tubing operates a private campground in Eldora focused on river floats.
Corn Patch Corner Campground / RV Park and Oakwood RV Park round out the private options for travelers who want simpler hookups without state-park reservation windows. Together these give RV renters a mix of lakefront, riverfront, and open-field sites within roughly 30 miles of Alden.
Things to do around Alden
Water dominates the summer schedule. Rock-n-Row Adventures Iowa River Tubing runs tube floats on the Iowa River from Memorial weekend through Labor Day, and float trips average three to five hours depending on water levels and wind. Kayaks and canoes work on the same stretch.
At Pine Lake State Park, Upper Pine Lake, Lower Pine Lake, and the Iowa River hold bass, catfish, and panfish, with shore access from jetties and docks. The lake is a no-wake reservoir, and shoreline and causeway fishing are popular at Beeds Lake as well. A paved trail connects the Pine Lake area to Eldora, good for family bike rides.
Beeds Lake State Park adds a swimming beach, a two-mile shoreline trail, and non-motorized and no-wake boating on the reservoir.

The core camping season across nearby state parks runs spring through late fall. Beeds Lake State Park Campground operates April 1 through October 31, with peak dates May 1 through October 15, and it is closed January 1 through March 31 and again November 1 through December 31. Pine Lake State Park keeps its campground open on a year-round basis for hardy RV travelers, with restored CCC-era stone cabins also available.
Summer weekends fill first. Tubing operations run from Memorial weekend through Labor Day, so July and early August are the busiest windows. River flow matters: June typically brings higher water and faster floats, July settles into moderate flow, and August tends to drop lower with occasional sand bars where floaters may have to walk.
Spring offers cool nights, higher water, and open sites. Fall brings color along the Iowa River and lighter reservation pressure through mid-October.
How to book campsites near Alden
Iowa state parks use a single reservation portal. Reservations at Beeds Lake are handled through iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com, and campsites can be reserved three months in advance up to four days prior to arrival, while the lodge and shelter can be reserved twelve months in advance. The campground is 100% reservable and a reservation is required.
Pine Lake State Park Campground uses the same system. The campground has 124 sites, and about three-quarters can be reserved online while roughly one-quarter are first-come, first-served, which helps last-minute trips.
For private options, Rock-n-Row Adventures Iowa River Tubing, Corn Patch Corner Campground / RV Park, and Oakwood RV Park book directly through the operator. Reserve tubing separately from your site when floating in summer.
What to expect on-site
Expect modern but modest facilities. Beeds Lake offers 138 campsites across multiple loops with tent, electric, and full-hookup options, modern restrooms with showers in both sections, and a sanitary dump station. Pine Lake State Park Campground provides electric sites with modern showers, restrooms, and a trailer dump station, and it accepts big rigs up to about 70 feet with pull-through sites available.
Rock-n-Row Adventures runs a more rustic setup. The 8-acre campground has 30-amp and 50-amp electric hook-ups but no sewer or water hook-ups at the site, with well water available at registration, outdoor rinse showers, indoor hot showers, flush toilets, and port-a-potties.
Cell service is generally reliable in and around Alden but can thin out in the Iowa River valley. Quiet hours at Beeds Lake run 10:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
