Campgrounds and RV parks near Allison, IA

Wilder Park packs a lot into a small footprint: two fishing ponds, an 18-hole disc golf course, sand volleyball, pickleball, mini golf, a BMX pump track, playgrounds, and a paved intra-park trail that connects to the Rolling Prairie Trail. At Beeds Lake State Park, the 99-acre reservoir is the main draw, with a two-mile shoreline trail, a swimming beach on the south shore, a boat ramp with a no-wake limit, and fishing for bass, catfish, and panfish. Hikers can walk to the base of the park's limestone Civilian Conservation Corps dam. George Wyth State Park offers four lakes (Brinker, George Wyth, Fisher, and Alice Wyth), 3.5 miles of paved multi-use trails plus about 10 miles of soft trails, and access to the Cedar Valley Paddlers Trail. Its trail system links directly to a 100-mile network across Waterloo and Cedar Falls.

The primary camping season in the Allison area runs from spring through fall. The Iowa state park campgrounds at Beeds Lake and George Wyth are closed from November 1 through March 31, with peak-season operations from May 1 through October 15 and off-peak rates in April and from October 16 through October 31. Wilder Park in Allison operates from April 1 through October 31. Summer is the busiest window. Sites near water fill quickly at George Wyth and Beeds Lake, holiday weekends book up first, and mosquitoes can be heavy at George Wyth due to standing water in the Cedar River floodplain. Riverside sites at George Wyth occasionally close during heavy-rain flood events. Spring and fall bring cooler nights and thinner crowds, with fall offering good bike-trail conditions. Winter is not suitable for RV camping at the state parks, though the George Wyth trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when snow allows.

Expect small-town northeast Iowa: quiet roads, farm country, and campgrounds that lean family-friendly rather than resort-style. Wilder Park is a city park with strictly enforced quiet hours from 10:30 pm to 7:00 am, a 10 mph speed limit, and leash rules for pets; city ordinance prohibits fireworks. Hookups at Wilder can sit on the opposite side of a rig, so extra hose and cord length help. At the Iowa state parks, campgrounds offer modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites. George Wyth accommodates rigs up to about 50 feet, but road noise from nearby highways and occasional train traffic is audible. Emerald ash borer is present statewide in Iowa, so buy firewood locally rather than hauling it in.
