Campgrounds and RV parks near Aplington, IA

Water recreation drives most trips. Rock-n-Row Adventures Iowa River Tubing runs float trips on the Iowa River near Pine Lake, where the river borders part of the park and is noted for channel catfish and smallmouth bass angling. Only electric trolling motors are allowed on Pine Lake itself. Beeds Lake supports fishing for bass, catfish, and panfish, no-wake boating from a modern ramp, and a swimming beach. Trail networks are a strong draw. A two-mile trail follows the shoreline around Beeds Lake, with access to the base of the limestone CCC dam at the spillway. At George Wyth, 3.5 miles of paved multi-use trails and 10 miles of soft trails within the park link to a 100-mile regional network across Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Wilder Park adds family-oriented amenities including 18-hole disc golf, two fishing ponds, playgrounds, mini golf, sand volleyball, and a BMX pump track.

The Iowa state park camping season is tightly bracketed. At Beeds Lake, the campground is closed each year from November 1 through March 31. George Wyth Campground follows the same pattern: closed January 1 through March 31, off-peak in April, peak from May 1 through October 15, off-peak October 16 through October 31, and closed again from November 1 through December 31. Pine Lake keeps its cabins open year-round, with the campground busiest in the warmer months. Wilder Park in Allison operates seasonally from April 1 through October 31. Late spring through early fall is the practical window for RV travel. May through mid-October delivers warm days, open beaches, and full trail access. Fall brings cooler nights and thinner crowds along the Iowa River bluffs at Pine Lake. Winter and early spring are difficult for RV travel. Water is shut off at the state park campgrounds during closed months, and services around Aplington are limited. Travelers arriving in the shoulder season should call ahead to confirm which loops and bath houses are open.

Sites at the nearby state parks are generally level with gravel or paved pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. George Wyth's 74-site campground includes 47 electric sites with 20/30/50 amp hookups, 13 non-electric sites, 6 tent-only sites, 3 walk-to sites, and a youth group site. Every site has a picnic table and fire ring, and the loop has modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station. At Beeds Lake, expect a large, popular campground with electric and non-electric sites, some full-hookup 20/30/50-amp sites, two modern bathhouses with showers, a playground, a dock, and a sanitary dump station. Sites near the center are close together. Wilder Park offers full hookups at RV sites with electric, water, and sewer, plus flush toilets, showers, a dump station, and Wi-Fi. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the area, though tree cover can weaken signals at Pine Lake.
